Can't decide whether to go for classic or cool

Ok so here's my dilemma.

I am expecting twin boys and can't decide whether to go for classic names or cooler more hip names.

We are thinking Edward & Louis, or the cooler but less safe Felix & Dexter?

Both myself and husband love all the names but don't want to regret our choices a few years down the line.

What to do??? Help!

No need to comment any further as we've decided on their first names. Edward and Louis will be their names and I like the fact that some people have said they are classic and cool!

Need to think of middle names now but we've got a while yet and will probably use grandfathers/great grandfathers names (even though I'm not that keen on them).

I don't like any of the 4 names mooted in the OP, so shall just comment on the classic/cool thang!

Classic remains classic. No matter what. I don't like Edward, but it's classic. And always will be.

"Cool" today, might be downmarket "chavtastic" tomorrow. Cool today, might be one of 23 in the same class tomorrow. Cool might become a new classic. With cool you are taking a risk.

PS I'd also put Louis in cool rather than classic category, but possibly Felix in classic rather than cool!

LaDiDaDi · 18/04/2010 10:41

Louis Benedict sounds better than Louis Thomas imo.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 18/04/2010 10:27

Felix & Dexter!

Absolutely love them!

Please choose them! @o

VictoriaC · 17/04/2010 22:37

I went for a slightly 'cool' first name with a classic middle name - I love Felix (will be a contender if/when I have DS2!). I also really like Louis. HTH!

How about Felix Edward and Louis Dexter?

CirrhosisByTheSea · 17/04/2010 22:28

Hmm, not sure on Louis Thomas. Thomas is so....solid, iykwim, and Louis is more stylish. I don't think they really match that well. Agree that something like Louis Benedict is better.

anonymumma · 17/04/2010 22:07

The only Leos I know are under the age of 7. Same goes for Felix and Dexter.

I know Louis & Edwards of all ages which makes them more classic to me.

Lee stares me in the face with Leo!

How do you like Louis Thomas? DH mentioned it. I don't hate it but I'm not sure if I like it enough. i think I'd like something quirky like Benedict in the middle!

Is Leo current - interesting, as I have always seen it as a real classic name as it's so old, and don't know any Leo's except for the one lad. Also I don't 'hear' the name Lee in it at all, personally, so that wouldn't have crossed my mind but there you go it just goes to show how different perceptions are!

I do think Edward and Louis are very nice, btw.

anonymumma · 17/04/2010 21:30

Louis is much nicer than Leo to me. Leo seems very current and not my type of name but then I really do not like the name Lee so maybe that's why.

Sorry but Marcus is awful.

I think we'll go for Edward & Louis. Maybe Edward Felix & Louis something.

Dexter is Michael C Hall for me. My favourite serial killer, but still a serial killer. I wouldn't.

Magaly · 17/04/2010 20:55

I think Marcus, Leo and Felix are all really classic but still a bit cool. Not like, ice cool, but not crusty !

Ineedsomesleep · 17/04/2010 20:25

Sorry, should have read my post before pressing Post Message.

Ineedsomesleep · 17/04/2010 20:24

*Crankytwanky" I thought of Felix Dexter too. Think he is great.

Louis will be pronounced Lewis by many people.

Oscar is also a name that has been popular for a while. I don't think of Oscar Wilde either when I hear the name. Just parents trying to be a bit different.

mathanxiety · 17/04/2010 20:04

Results 1-20 of about 1,050,000 for Vampire-related T-shirts alone.

I like Felix and Louis.

Dexter says 1940's America to me, and Edward is going to be forever associated with the Vampire phenomenon, unfortunately.

nooka · 17/04/2010 19:07

Anonymumma I'm surprised that it was Ian who felt put out! We had a lovely dog called Titus (and I have an Uncle Ian, not that he was ever called that). But those names are really very different. I don't that your choices are. Both Edward and Dexter for example are Old English.

CirrhosisByTheSea · 17/04/2010 18:31

If you like Louis but wanted something more cool how about Leo? It's one of my fave names at the moment, I met a gorgeous teenage Leo the other day and he was SO cool

Leo and Edward sound a really good match to me as well - I think Edward is both classic AND cool, personally because of the name itself plus all the cool nicknames, eg Ned

StrictlyKatty · 17/04/2010 18:05

Please not Louis! It's sooooo wet! Edward is a strong name and I really like Felix and Dexter

bronze · 17/04/2010 17:50

felix isnt 'cool' its public school try to be cool

having said that I don't dislike it

the only name out of those I do actually like though is Edward

anonymumma · 17/04/2010 17:45

I think Edward is the most common then Louis. Felix and Dexter are much more unusual which I guess makes them 'cool' in my mind.

Anyway, I think we've decided now.

Thanks for those that commented. I know I'm probably more sensitive than usual but I thought some comments were a little harsh.

I've never known anyone called Felix so it just reminds me of cat food, children tend to grow into their names though so whatever you pick will work.

seeker · 17/04/2010 17:34

Felix and Edward sound fab together.

Dexter is just awful - and a serial killer as well!

cece · 17/04/2010 17:32

Classic names are cool in my humble opinion.

'cool' names are not.

TheSteelFairy2 · 17/04/2010 17:31

Edward and Felix

Louis too common and Dexter too try hard.

Imvho.

Love Edward though and Felix was my choice for dd if she was a boy.

Edward vetoed due to how it went with our surname.

Ivykaty44 · 17/04/2010 17:29

Dex - it will be shortened to dex at school cos it is easy to shorten

I would have Lou and Dex

Ed and Dex

lou and Ed

Ted and Dex = tedex

Felix I am sorry not my sort of name

But can see lix and dex will could be lix dicks

diddl · 17/04/2010 17:23

I only like Felix from those names-and would be very tempted to have an Oscar with it.
