Awful biblical names

Anyone else out there who thinks some biblical names are just awful? My cousin just named her DS Enoch -- bleugh! Some other ones I'd never use:

Hepzibah -- sounds like hippopotamus or heffalump.
Jezebel -- obvious reason!
Jael -- can't get the story of her hammering a tent peg through some chap's head out of my own head.

Melchizidec.
Apart from being a mouthful, its what Sara called her rat in A Little Princess, and although it was a very nice rat as rats go, its not exactly a great association

titus
ariel (lovely name and nearly used for dd4 but wonder would you always have jokes about soap powder. i wasnt brave enough to risk it )
ebenezer (scrooge)
zebedee (reminds me too much of magic roundabout)
keren -happuch
nimrod
mephibosheth

Can't get past the thought of Enoch Powell with Enoch - surely that's the first person people would think of, and not someone you'd necessarily want associated with your dc. And the suffering of Job would always put me off. Weren't there a lot of boils involved?

weaselm4 · 16/04/2010 21:47

been watching this thread because I've got two with biblical names - knew one or t'other would come up sooner or later!
(Don't mind - everyone has different likes and dislikes regarding names!)

Caleb

Moses

Am not keen on Noah either but no that it is getting popular

some Biblical names are lovely but there are some awful ones too.

jedediah is a bit ...juddery. Jed nice, though, in a US baptist, six fingers on one hand kinda way.

GibberingGinger · 16/04/2010 21:30

That would be not [sceptical]

GibberingGinger · 16/04/2010 21:29

My granddad was Ephraim, which is an awful name. He was always called Eph (F) to the point where he was once asked what the F stood for (poor person probably thought Frank or something). According to my baby names book it's a name that going to come back in a big way [sceptical]

LittleSilver · 16/04/2010 19:26

Huh? Jael rocks as a name, actually I have just suggested it on another thread. Jezebel pretty cool too, but can't imagine Our Vicar baptising my child Jezebel, nor FiL's face (he is also of the cloth!)

bellissima · 16/04/2010 18:55

Hepzibah is a bit too much but 'Eppie' (as in Silas Marner) is lovely. Agree Jezebel is fantastic but feel it would be a little cruel to saddle a child with it.

Beelzebub

IngridFletcher · 16/04/2010 18:18

I like Jonah too.

IngridFletcher · 16/04/2010 18:17

I think Enoch Powell may have killed off the use of Enoch in this country. Has anyone actually been called Herod since the actual Herod?

belgo · 16/04/2010 18:04

Herod

wilbur · 16/04/2010 18:03

beanlet - I found a list of names that my dad and mum had done for when I was on the way and Hepzibah was on it - but as a joke (I hope!) as my older sister's name is Hannah.

ShadeofViolet · 16/04/2010 17:53

I know an Enoch, was wondering if it was the same child but the Enoch I know is 8 (In DS's scout group) He is actually Enoch-Elijah It sounds too much like kneeknock to me.

I like Ezra though, but I wouldnt use it.

rosieposey · 16/04/2010 17:52

Lol ASLD its pronounced 'Joe-wb' i dont mind it - not something id choose for my DC though.

LynetteScavo · 16/04/2010 17:52

I say Jobe.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 16/04/2010 17:47

How do you pronounce "Job"? I say....Job.

fruitshootsandheaves · 16/04/2010 17:47

Pontius

nobiggy · 16/04/2010 17:46

Probably the Dorc part of it.

Having said that, even if a name sounds odd to you to start with, you get used to it.

rosieposey · 16/04/2010 17:46

Tamar, i think its a bit pretentious and im pretty sure my friend named her after the river but she insists its a biblical name, i just dont like it (unless your a river).

nickelbabe · 16/04/2010 17:44

you have to watch American Pie to know the reason.
they use it as an insult, like dork or nerd.

i like it though cos it's funny. i wouldn't use it because of the above.

it's another name for Tabitha.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 16/04/2010 17:39

What's wrong with Dorcas!

I really like Job but I knew it would be pronounced wrongly all the time.
