Awful biblical names

Anyone else out there who thinks some biblical names are just awful? My cousin just named her DS Enoch -- bleugh! Some other ones I'd never use:

Hepzibah -- sounds like hippopotamus or heffalump.
Jezebel -- obvious reason!
Jael -- can't get the story of her hammering a tent peg through some chap's head out of my own head.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I have a Bethany too, I like its Biblical connection.

I know an Aloysius and an Elijah.
I also know an Ignacio but he's Spanish.
Oh and I know a Magdelene (as in Mary)

TrowelAndError · 20/04/2010 17:14

We know a girl called Ezra. Truly.

rubetube · 20/04/2010 17:08

Could I get away with calling a girl Ezra??? It sounds so ...... womanly!

BusyMissIzzy · 18/04/2010 17:07

Not strictly biblical, but I know of someone who named their dd Nevaeh (pr NevAYuh).. because it is 'heaven' spelled backwards.

mathanxiety · 17/04/2010 20:17

I don't like Joel, Caleb, Gideon, Jared, Enoch or Noah.

juneybean · 17/04/2010 14:20

Of course the Duggars have quite a few.... Joshua, Josiah, Jedidiah, Jeremiah

willowinthesea · 17/04/2010 14:09

i know lots of boy jordans but they are now in their teens havent met a baby/ toddler jordan in ages . i would certainly think twice about using it for either sex now where as 15 years ago when naming my children i seriously considered it for dd chose bethany instead and then 2 years later for ds

I like loads of bibilcal names. Admit some are a bit too far out Nebuchadnezzar for example

I had lots of th eones mentioned on my list for ds3 top of which were Gideon and Elijah/Elias/Eliah
but DH could could only stretch as far as Isaac which of course is far too popular for my liking (poor ds3)

jordan used to be a nice unisex biblical name but i fear looking at birth registrations it is doomed because of its katie price link to disappear into obscurity for at least the next 50 years particularly for boys

I just can't get on with Noah: however popular it gets, it just makes me think of Sunday school, or the old tv show Noah & Nelly.

CuppaTeaJanice · 17/04/2010 12:01

DPs gran wanted him to have a biblical name.

MIL suggested Jesus. Didn't go down too well!!

dandycandyjellybean · 17/04/2010 11:57

My ds is Jonah (dove) Gideon (mighty warrior)and my mum knows a little boy called Malachi.

PuppyMonkey · 17/04/2010 11:42

Nebuchadnezzar is a bit crap. IMHO.

tummytickler · 17/04/2010 11:35

I like Ephraim - have never met one though - can't believe it will be huge!
I have 2 Hebrew sons that have some people , but they haven't been mentioned here yet!
Someone asked me my ideas for a ds3 and had except Jewish friends (Shem, Lev, Mordecai, Hershel).

I like Ezra, but we know a couple - lovely!

janajos · 17/04/2010 09:20

I have two biblically named sons, Jorin (child of freedom) and Isaac (laughter). I love those names, and I agree with whoever said that however unusual, we get used to them.

CheerfulYank · 17/04/2010 09:14

I love Caleb and Ezra! I know a wonderful Ezra. I also know brothers named Jacob and Job who are awful little boys, so those are out.

I've never liked Orpah..

purpleturtle · 17/04/2010 09:07

I rather like Micah - but DH would not be persuaded.

LittlePushka · 17/04/2010 00:17

Ephraim is great! Caleb is great!

Zaccheus is great!

Only ones I do not like are the ones I cannot spell/pronounce!

Clary · 17/04/2010 00:11

Cain - killed his brother, why would you use it?

Noah fine, Josiah fine, Elijah fine, but Malachi or Micah, while not awful, are just a step too far down the road for my taste.

Yes grimma I know a couple of children called Cain.

Has anyone actually met a child called Judas or Herod or Methuselah tho?

LunarSea · 17/04/2010 00:06

Yes - I know a Cain. And a Titus (as mentioned earlier in the thread).

ozmetric · 16/04/2010 23:56

OTOH the Bible contains a lot of consistently popular names for a book written in another part of the world thousands of years ago.

I wonder if anyone has used Cain since Genesis?
