Naomi, Sarah or Ruth

I like biblical names but don't want to make my daughter hate her name. What do you think of these? Which do you prefer? What do the names make you think of? Do you know any children with these names - what are they like?

Any opinions really...be honest!

The two I have met recently both pronounce it ... hum, hard to write, but it comes out sort of "Nair-mi". So without that quite heavy 'y'. That probably makes bugger all sense, but it is nice, honest.
And I prefer it to the Nay-oh-mi version.

Surprise · 16/04/2010 20:06

Ruth.

trumpton · 16/04/2010 19:46

My mother was Nay-Oh-mee. Spelt Naomi but a scottish friend has a daughter and pronounces her name Nigh-Oh-mee (first syllable rhymes with Sigh)
A vote for Naomi.

Goingspare · 16/04/2010 19:38

That's a funny way to pronounce Naomi.

LittleSilver · 16/04/2010 19:24

Jael?

nbee84 · 16/04/2010 19:19

Haliborange - how would you pronounce Naomi?

SillyTillyBilly · 16/04/2010 19:16

Gosh - no real clear winner then. Pretty mixed opinions...

Rebecca (or Rebekah ?), and Miriam also lovely

I don't think that Sarah is as dated as other 1970s names. It's more of a classic than that

Jamieandhismagictorch · 16/04/2010 18:42

Sarah is my favourite, of yours

I also like Leah, and Lydia

Also, Hannah

janeite · 16/04/2010 18:37

Naomi is my favourite - pretty and I like the look of it on the page too, if that makes sense?

violethill · 16/04/2010 18:34

Ruth.

All good though

beanlet · 16/04/2010 16:12

Ruth is my mother's name, so I'm rather fond of it (though she did get called "ruthless" all the way through school, poor thing!). Virtually no-one is called Ruth anymore though -- so it would fit the criteria of a classic name that's now unusual, if that were something you were going for. Nice character in the Bible story too.

I've always thought Sarah is a bit boring, but quite like Naomi.

Lovethesea · 16/04/2010 15:15

Sarah I love - and the meaning 'princess' is also great to find out as you grow up :-)

Naomi and Ruth I am not so keen on but that's because of people I've known with the names so biased for me.

Haliborange · 16/04/2010 15:00

I like Naomi, but not when it is pronounced Nay-oh-mi.

Also I think Sarah is much underused these days.

jellybeans · 16/04/2010 14:53

Sarah is the nicest.

Naomi is ok, don't like Ruth, too old/plain/unpretty and 'roof' like.

Goingspare · 16/04/2010 12:46

I have a Sarah and might have had a Ruth if my husband liked my friend Ruth as much as I do!

Poohbearsmom · 16/04/2010 12:43

Sarah is timeless & love Rachel & Rebecca too! Ozmetric gave a great list i really love the names Grace & Eve

DebiNewberry · 16/04/2010 12:32

Ruth. Is pretty, nice nickname potential, cool and quite quirky too.

CuppaTeaJanice · 16/04/2010 12:03

Ruth is my middle name and I've always disliked it, it just sounds so prim.

Sarah - it's a nice name, but was so overused in the 1970s that when your daughter is in her 20s, she'll have a 'middle aged' name. A bit like a young woman being called 'Val' or 'Janet' now. It just sounds odd.

I really like Naomi. I like the way the letters look together, and it's a beautiful sound. Also not too popular, but not so unusual that people will get confused with spellings etc.

going · 16/04/2010 12:00

Naomi and Sarah are pleasent names. I find Ruth harsh and not at all pretty.

inveteratenamechanger · 16/04/2010 12:00

I like them all, but LOVE Sarah.

Bicnod · 16/04/2010 11:59

Sarah

LouMacca · 16/04/2010 11:56

Sarah is by far the nicest.
