and Viola? Viola fab.

MartinlovesDebi · 17/04/2010 22:53

Yes, agree Hero is used in Shakespeare for a girl (one of his slightly wet ones, but still, good name) - I really considered it for a middle name.

I like

Sylvie and Atticus best.

Great names.

I also like Vita for a girl, but that's not on your list. Just sayin'

GladioliBuckets · 17/04/2010 17:12

Would think girl for Hero (it's in Shakespeare folks!), boy for Hiro. I like both.

bruffin · 14/04/2010 23:58

Would like Briony but not Bryony

LadyCressida · 14/04/2010 23:38

I like lots of your girls names! You have similar taste to me (lots of shakespearean influences!)

Adriana - not convinced, sounds a bit too masculine
Aemilia - love it but they wouldn't thank you for always having to spell it
Alicia - like but not so much if it's pronounced ali-sha
Amelia - like but v popular
Beatrice -love. nn Bea is so sweet.
Bryony -love
Cressida - this is my name so obviously the best one!
Esme - okay
Harriet -like
Hermione - love
Luciana -okay
Lyra -okay
Niamh - prob would have to spell a lot
Rosalind - like (also like Rosaline)
Rowena -like
Sienna - bit trendy

For a boy:

Hero - girls name?
Hugo - nice
Jake - okay - better if short for Jacob
Leo -okay
Lewis -nice
Lucas - nice but trendy
Oliver - nice but popular
Oscar - okay
Piers - nice but a bit rah - depends what type of school they will go to! In general i think girls can pull of unusual names more easily.
Rupert - ditto.
Tobias okay
Toby -nice

Yes Juliet and Sylvie are both beautiful.

Felix is lovely too

Magaly · 14/04/2010 20:41

Adriana - too much... Adrienne is simpler and nicer
Aemilia - like a misspelling. Amelia or Emilia
Alicia - OK as it is
Amelia as above
Beatrice - I like this.
Bryony - Like this
Cressida - no. Bit pompous or something but that's jmo
Esme - I like it.
Harriet - ok
Hermione - not my cup of tea
Luciana - nice but a bit flowery, like TWO really girly names stuck together, but I still like it.
Lyra - not crazy about this one.
Niamh - I like it
Rosalind _ I like it. I like Christabel too. quite Edwardian (?)
Rowena - nothing wrong with it but I don't like it.
Sienna - bit slebby but it's pretty.

For a boy:

Hero - girls name? I like Arnaud and Bruno
Hugo - love it
Jake - ok, good popular name
Leo - love this one
Lewis - not crazy about it.
Lucas - ok but popular. I suggest Marcus instead
Oliver - ok
Oscar - ok
Piers - I like it
Rupert - good God no
Tobias - I like it
Toby - A/a

ChynaDoll2006 · 14/04/2010 19:22

ChynaDoll2006 · 14/04/2010 19:20

Ophelia -- No. Too many Feel Ya nn possibilities
Simone -- Nice
Sylvie -- Lovely

Boys:
Atticus -- Like a lot
Cedric -- ok
Felix -- Love
Lewis -- Prefer Louis

C4ro · 13/04/2010 13:51

Hero is a girls name- she is the one that gets dumped/ pretends to die in the Shakespeare play "Much Ado about Nothing".

Best Girls on your list
Beatrice
Harriet
Lyra
Rosalind

Best Boys on your list
Jake
Leo
Oscar

Moook · 13/04/2010 13:40

I'm not sure about the spelling Hiro - I would read that as "High - Row" which I don't like.
I'm glad you didn't think my name suggestions were all insane! We now have plenty of options so I'll probably be back soon stuck for choosing with a shortlist.

petitemummy · 13/04/2010 12:58

I love Hero for a boy, I have a japanese friend with the name but they spell it 'Hiro', maybe a good way to make it a boys name and move away from the superhero connections...?

swanandduck · 13/04/2010 12:56

Oh, and Claudia and Juliet from DH's list.

swanandduck · 13/04/2010 12:53

I like Alicia, Rosalind, Hugo, Oliver and Toby the best.

Egwene · 13/04/2010 12:50

Beatrice and Harriet are very nice, Henriette is fantastic. :O)

Tobermory · 13/04/2010 10:52

We have Claudia on our short list too and also like Madeline . Last night my DH suggested Ophelia and Juliet for our 'getting longer list', but I'm not convinced.

Maybe Felix, but I think i see it as a bit of a 'cat' name. From your originial list I love Tobias with nn Toby and also Oliver but am put off by its popularity.

ozmetric · 13/04/2010 10:44

From yours and your DH's lists, I like

Amelia, Beatrice, Cressida, Luciana, Rosalind, Rowena, Juliet, Lily

Jake, Oliver, Felix

Moook · 13/04/2010 10:14

I have showed dh the thread and he would like to hear opinions on these:

Girls: Amelie (he likes it with the French accent on, but I don't know how to do that on the computer and I don't like French accents in names for non-French people)
Bryony (yay! was one of mine too)
Claudia
Henriette
Juliet
Lily
Madeline
Ophelia
Simone
Sylvie

Boys: He liked these names suggested by Teddy:
Atticus
Cedric
Felix
and suggested Lewis

We seem to be doing much better for girls names than boys.

You're putting a lot of expectations on the shoulders of any child you name Hero.

Littlepurpleprincess · 12/04/2010 19:56

I like Hero a lot! And I've only heard it used as a boys name before.

displayuntilbestbefore · 12/04/2010 19:42

Rosalind is a lovely name and, IMVHO, sadly neglected when people name their babies!

The boys names don't grab me but Oliver and Oscar I think are too commonly used so I wouldn't choose them.
