I've had enough now - Name my baby. I am quite honestly sick and tired of thinking I like something then changing my mind. :0(

Have 3 boys, this will be my first and only daughter - think this is why it seems so hard to choose the right name.

Names have included:

Eleanor
Lydia
Sophia
Eloise
Alexia/Alexis
Sienna
Verity
Bryony

Latest was Sophia but I have caught wind of this becoming popular and most Sophias getting called Sophie anyway which is a totally different name IMO and I'm not as keen.

Didn't want anything really popular.

Can't have Rose as it bleeds into our surname, as does Eloise actually as a first name.

Surname is 2 syllables beginning with S very similar to Simpson.

I've been thinking about a sensible way of resolving this sort of angst.

Perhaps you could have a baby-name lottery.

The idea is that you charge everyone you know a pretty nominal sum. Say £5 for argument's sake. Proceeds to charity. You draw up a shortlist of names, and your friends/family get to choose a name. Or two.

Then on the day of the birth, you get the midwife to draw the name out of a hat.

Problem solved.

mckenzie · 05/04/2010 23:56

personally I'd wait until she is born. We'd decided on names for our second DC, boys and girls names, but when DC was born she so didn't suit the girl's name we had chosen and as I looked at her another name came into my head and refused to go away. And so she was given the new name and I still think it suits her so much better than the other one.

My nan in law is Rose with a surname that sounds like it could be very similar to yours. FWIW, I think it sounds lovely together.

outnumbered2to1 · 05/04/2010 23:47

my vote goes to Eloise as i have a niece with this name and she is gorgeous (also is a variation of my name!!!)

others would be
Amelia
Heather
Rose
Freya

lowrib · 05/04/2010 23:44

"If she marries she'll only have this combo for a few years anyway. Then she'll have pot luck with her husband's surname!"

PollyTechnique how young are you planning on marrying your DDs off?!! She'd have the name for 16 years at the very least. And one would hope, for a little longer too!

lowrib · 05/04/2010 23:42

How about these Rose names?

Rosana / Rosanna
Rosalina
Rosemary
Rosanne

What's your background? There are so many variants of Rose, could you pick one you have ties to maybe? Have a look at this page for a long list of them, e.g....

Róisín (Irish)
Roza (Russian)
Rosella (Italian)
Ruzenka (Czech)
Chara (Spanish, and English apparently, meaning Rose)

etc

morejuiceplease · 05/04/2010 22:06

My dd is Lydia. It's not too popular and such a lovely name obviously picked by people with impeccable taste!

VerityBrulee · 05/04/2010 22:04

What about Rosa?

NorkilyChallenged · 05/04/2010 22:01

Rosalie is good actually.

Lexi is very popular and that is an obvious shortening for Alexia so I think that might put me off (if you really don't want something too popular).

Charlotte definitely popular. Sophia is lovely, but Sophie less so (and very popular here too). Eleanor/Ellie/etc all hugely hugely popular and I wouldn't go for that at all.

I like Verity too. And Violet.

But really I agree with Driven that you need to deal with the Rose issue first, as it's sitting there behind everything else just now.

choosyfloosy · 05/04/2010 21:51

Call her Rose Red S_.

Red is a v cool middle name IMO (I am not cool though). Rose Red is a fab name - I really like double names, love that bit in Pretty Woman where the shopwalker says 'Mary Pat, Mary Sue, Mary Ellen' or whatever it is).

DinahRod · 05/04/2010 21:46

Some names on your list are popular but that is because they are beautiful. Choose a name you love.

Eleanor - lovely. Gorgeous nn as well, Ellie ubiquitous but adore Nell or Nora
Lydia - lovely, have never come across the rhyme with chlamydia. Another name that is very attractive is Lorna.
Sophia - lovely - the only Sophia I know is called Sophia and definitely not Sophie
Eloise - pretty
Alexia/Alexis - not for me, too Dynasty, prefer Alix or Alexandra
Sienna - pretty but don't like the celeb connotation
Verity - too harsh for me but classic and classy
Bryony - no

DrivenToDistraction · 05/04/2010 21:38

So, actually, you love Rose and that's what you really want to use. It's beautiful.

You have to get the Rose issue out of the way I'm afraid! I had a name I really, really wanted to use for DD but that it was impossible for us to use, it wasn't until I was able to 'let go' of it that I was able to choose her name. I tied myself in knots about it, ruled out loads of names that were, in fact, serious contenders and ending up having to go right back to the beginning...

Anyway, all is not lost. I see what you mean about Rose bleeding into your surname, it's a shame about that, but surely not insurmountable? Could you live with naming her Rosa (or one of the many, many other variants) and calling her Rose a lot of the time/within the family?

(I love Rosalie)

janeite · 05/04/2010 21:35

Roses - I have a Naomi too! Dp and I agonised over her name as we were either poles apart in our choices or the ones we both liked didn't 'go' with his surname so we 'settled' on Naomi but I'm so glad we did. Pretty and not too common, unlike dd2's name (I think there are 3 in her class!).

PollyTechnique · 05/04/2010 21:35

Does it matter too much if Rose "bleeds" into your surname, as you said?

It's nice to get a combination of first and last names that flow together well, but unless it sounds absolutely stoopid, it doesn't really matter if it's slightly off.

If she marries she'll only have this combo for a few years anyway. Then she'll have pot luck with her husband's surname!

But she'll always be lovely Rose.

gibbberish · 05/04/2010 21:34

Don't listen to them Lady.

It's Alexia. You know it. I know it.

roses12 · 05/04/2010 21:33

Love the name Sophia. Sophia Lorren was gorgeous. Thats my vote.

Rosina
Rosanna
Rosetta?

wubblybubbly · 05/04/2010 21:29

They're all lovely, so difficult to choose, I think I prefer Verity.

My current favourite though is Vanessa.

roses12 · 05/04/2010 21:26

Was very sure i was going to call my ds Ben, my friend even bought a book about Ben the bunny. But with 3 weeks to go dh worked up the courage (took me out for a lovely meal public place) and told me that his dead dog was called Ben. Ds is now Joshua.

I finally decided on my dd name on the way to the registery office and even then worried about it for days afterwards. Cannt image her called anything else now it so suits her - Naomi.

lupav5 · 05/04/2010 21:26

What about Atalanta; one of the children that i used to nanny for was called Atalanta and it was shortened to Lante, which was so cute and unusual. If its out of the ones you've listed then i like Briony best and was thinking about it for our DD but DH was not so keen. Good luck with the choice.

jollydiane · 05/04/2010 21:19

I love Grace, but from your list Sienna

Verity gets my vote

janeite · 05/04/2010 21:05

Eleanor - like this a lot but prefer Elinor
Lydia - nice
Sophia
Eloise - really like this. Wanted it for dd1 but dp vetoed.
Alexia/Alexis - don't like
Sienna - don't like
Verity - like a lot
Bryony

You have some nice names here!

Charlotte is nice. Don't like Rosina at all, sorry.

More ideas:

Marianne
Naomi
Beatrice
Yolande
Clover
Harriet

LadyOfTheFlowers · 05/04/2010 20:59

Alexis would bleed into surname yes, so would be Alexia or Alexa instead I guess.

Charlotte has also been on the list - forgot that one - but think that has recently boomed in popularity, no?

It is so hard.

What do we think about Rosina? Is it a bit 'meh'?
Rose is my favourite ever name and anything else along those lines doesn't seem to cut it. They don't seem as good as straight forward Rose....
