Isabella/Bella and Twilight!

NotATwilightFan · 03/04/2010 15:00

I really want to name my DD Bella. Well Isabella, Bella for short. It's a family name - grandmother called it.

However, everyone keeps telling me about the Twilight films/books, although I'm now aware this is the main character's name....

How many baby Bellas do you know? Is it popular in your experience? Would you let it put you off? It was number one in Australia last year!

I know I can't pick a name that is entirely original, however, I don't pick one that really defines an era. For instance Sues are nearly always in their 50s, Kelly's 70's children and so on... WWYD?

it's not going to be yesterday's news for a good while when the new film is about to come out and there are 2 more to come....

MissJacksonIfYourNasty · 05/04/2010 11:04

Who cares? It's a teen flick/book that's currently flavour of the month. It'll be yesterday's news before you know it. Choose the name you love.

Angela82 · 04/04/2010 21:38

I really like Isabella a lot and considering it for our daughter who is due in September. We also like Jemima too.

On the subject of names being too popular, the thing that gets to me is that half the people on the baby name discussions are really against "boring names that are really common" but if you try to pick a name that is even slightly different you always get the other half saying how much they dislike it (Jemima - puddleduck/too posh etc).

I think you just can't win when you're picking a name! Best to go with your gut instinct I guess.

PS You can nearly always come up with some kind of association with any name (eg Twilight films/books) if you think hard enough so probably best not to worry about it too much

Galena · 04/04/2010 21:28

lol I looked at the title of this thread and thought you wanted to call your DD 'Twilight'! I thought it was a pretty name, but not to my taste!

plonker · 04/04/2010 18:49

3 out of the 5 names you mentioned are my dd's!!

...I think your friends have great taste in names

Mondayschild · 04/04/2010 13:27

My DS is a Jacob and I honestly had no idea about the Twilight link until I took him into work and a colleague told me Jacob was her favorite Twilight character [Insert Mondayschild realises she is hopelessly out-of-touch emoticon!!]. It hasn't put me off his name one jot though, and still think it is perfect for him.

Only thing is that Isabella was a v.strong contender if ever I have a DD as I love it and it has family connections for me too. Think the two together might lead to people concluding I'm a little vampire obsessed.....

I'd say go for it. It is a really pretty, timeless name and by the time our DCs are older Twilight will probably be long forgotten (apologies to any fans!)

strawberrycornetto · 04/04/2010 11:21

Plonker I don't think so, I was just thinking of the children of my friends where I know more than 1 with the same name!!

jenduff · 04/04/2010 11:12

It is very popular round here (Midlands) I know 8 under the age of 7 - one is my baby niece.

Beautiful name in all it's variants - use it if you like it- both my DC have top 10 names - they weren't top ten when they were named though so don't let popularity put you off - you could go with something that you think is original and then it takes off massively.

StrictlyKatty · 04/04/2010 11:01

I know a lot. Many many Bella's, Isabel's, Isobel's and Izzy's.

There are going to be a lot more due to the book so if you don't want your DD to be one of 4 in her class I wouldn't do it tbh.

sassysass · 03/04/2010 21:45

Isabella is popular enough as it is - I don't think Twilight will make a difference to its popularity. It's a lovely name - that's why it's soooo popular (likewise Isabelle). Bella is a great nickname, much nicer than Izzy!!

its a lovely name if being popular worries you it is very where i live, i know three born within eighteen months.

NotATwilightFan · 03/04/2010 19:41

Thanks all for these views - really nice to get everyone else's perspectives ... (Sorry suwoo stern look taken on board!)

I'll definitely go with it. I honestly don't want to be 'different' - and it is beautiful. I won't let Twilight put me off - silly reason. And if it's popular, I just guess that all those girls mothers have as exquisite taste as I do!

Do you know me Strawberry?

You've just named all 3 of my children there

Strawberrycornetto · 03/04/2010 18:11

My DD is 5 and is an (Isa)Bella. She is the only one in her year at school in London(60 children in reception). We are moving and the head in the new school said there is one other Bella in the whole school. It was more popular where we used to live (SW London) but I don't know any more Bellas than I do Lucy, Mia, Ella, Ava, Millie etc. Probably fewer.

I was slightly saddened to think that DD might retrospectively be associated with a fictional character but such is life. At least our surname isn't Swann.

loobylu3 · 03/04/2010 18:09

Isabella is a v pretty name, though I love the more simple Isabel even more!

I don't think the Twilight connection is v strong.

I would tend to agree with dizzy re names that you love and popularity.

If you want a similar but less popular choice, how about Isadora- I think it's beautiful!

sweetkitty · 03/04/2010 18:03

It is a beautiful name and if this baby had been a girl it would have been her name.

I don't know of any other Isabella's either (apart from Dizzy's of course)

Round here it's all Sophie, Emma or Evie!

elvislives · 03/04/2010 17:44

I think each of the various spellings of Isobel/Isabella is in the top twenty, if not the top 10. Added together it would probably be the most common girls name.

My dancing teacher had 6 girls in her class of 20 called Isabel.

Needanewname · 03/04/2010 17:42

Well I've always loved the name Phoebe, but DH not keen cos of friends, with DD2 he agreed but we named her something else in the end - really regret not going with my favourite name - oh well, its her middle name

plonker · 03/04/2010 17:41

It's a beautiful name. Dd3 was nearly Isabel

It is very popular, and I do think it will be even more so because of Twilight (I'm 34 and lots of Twilight fans are around my age, including me )

I agree with Dizzy though - don't be put off a name because it's popular - you will most certainly regret it

KristinaM · 03/04/2010 17:41

I dont know a single child called Bella or Isabella. And I have one child in nursery and two in school> i think its a beautiful name

I only know adult Isobels and they are all 50+, so IMHO its due for a revival
'
I have never watched twilight

izzybiz · 03/04/2010 17:40

My Dd is Isabelle and we call her Bella.
Its a popular name due to the fact it is a classic beautiful name.

I don't think its "over" popular though, not like Ava, Ruby etc.

If you like it then use it, I'd rather use a good classic name that I love than try to hard to be different IYKWIM.

suwoo · 03/04/2010 17:36

FWIW, I don't know any Isabella's and I have never seen/read twilight

However, my name is Su (Suzanne) and I am 34 not in my fifties.

LadyCressida · 03/04/2010 17:33

Surely all the twilight fans are age 15 and under and not old enough to be having babies yet... I am really surprised that many mums instantly leap to that conclusion.

And no one would instantly say 'ah a twilight fan' if you suggested calling a boy Edward.

Just don't call her Renesmee

dizzydixies · 03/04/2010 15:32

oh and mine wants to be known as Isabella not Issy, sorry - not that it makes much difference to your choice so not sure why I'm telling you
