What do you think of Deirdre as a girl's name?

The meaning is sad. Sorrowful. But would you let the meaning stop you using the name you love?

Liadan is fab.

Magaly · 02/04/2010 20:49

That was me not very subtly saying no to deirdre I guess. My mum's friend is a deirdre. She's nice but .......... NOpe.

Magaly · 02/04/2010 20:48

What do you think of Liadin? it seems to be a bit fashionable right now. I keep meeting little liadins. Pronounced LEEudin.

Oy, less of the "old lady!"
I'm 41 and it was very popular amongst my peers growing up in Ireland. I love it!

KAEKAE · 02/04/2010 18:36

I am sorry I don't like it, of course it does remind me of Deidre from corrie, veiny neck, bad glasses and a smokers voice, but that wouldn't put me off if I liked the name.

gibbberish · 02/04/2010 18:06

No. Please don't.

BuzzingNoise · 02/04/2010 17:56

It's lovely. Classy.

NO, HANG ON, IT'S NOT! IT IS AWFUL.

mathanxiety · 02/04/2010 17:55

Yep, it's DEER-dra. I know a teenage one and grew up with several.

I think of the Monty Python marriage guidance skit, though I like the name.

Hullygully · 02/04/2010 17:50

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Unexpected, serious, and yet with a cutesy twist.

ImaDeidreandhateit · 02/04/2010 17:48

Have namechanged just to let you know I grew up with this name and hated every minute of it! In my early twenties I adopted a nickname so only my family call me Deidre now. (Dear-dree) It was always rhymed with weirdy or dreary at school and I was aware it meant 'woeful' and in a way I lived up to it For a while I was called Diddy which was ok but it wasn't until Deirdre Barlow came along that everyone recognised it as a proper name and I didn't have to spell it out all the time.

What I'm trying to say is DON'T!!!

Shaz10 · 02/04/2010 17:34

I like it if you're Irish.

DivineInspiration · 02/04/2010 17:30

I like it spelled Deidre and pronounce 'dee-druh', as an old friend spelled and pronounced it. I think it's lovely. Not so keen on Deirdre and 'deer-dree'.

I don't think the meaning is everything, especially not if you really love the name - there are plenty of common names which mean miserable things, and on a day-to-day basis not many people are going to instantly think of the meaning when they hear the name. I quite like Dolores and wouldn't be put off by the (same) meaning.

neolara · 01/04/2010 13:56

Awful. Sorry.

thumbchick · 01/04/2010 13:51

dreary or weirdy Deirdre - one of my real never-in-a-million-years names, sorry.

jellybeans · 01/04/2010 13:48

don't like

5DollarShake · 01/04/2010 11:49

Daphne just makes me think of a (bow-legged) man dressed as a woman. Could never used it.

BallpointPen · 01/04/2010 11:31

My auntie is called Deirdre, we're of Irish descent so it's pronounced Deer-drah. IMO it's a bit of an old lady name and not one that has managed the old lady chic of recent fashions.

The nn are ok- Dee, DeeDee, Daydee but I'm not really that keen. They are 100's which are prettier.

MmeLindt · 01/04/2010 11:30

I LOVE Daphne. Such a fab name. Due a comeback this year.

Deirdre is just so dreary and blah, sorry.

ericnorthmansmistress · 01/04/2010 11:29

Dreary Deirdre

CountessDracula · 01/04/2010 11:13

Daphne?!?!?
MIL is Daphne and loathes it (understandably)
She is called Dee and always has been

CountessDracula · 01/04/2010 11:11

I don't like it
It is ok ish when pronouced Deer-drah
but not Deer-Dree

AllieW · 01/04/2010 11:10

Not keen, sorry. Daphne is much nicer.
