I think it is the name of Richard Hammond's wife who started life as Amanda.

mathanxiety · 03/04/2010 17:18

To try to figure out Magaly's question -- Jewish naming customs may be responsible for the name becoming associated with US Jewish culture. Followers of Jewish baby naming traditions give a baby a name from the surrounding culture plus a Hebrew name or on derived from Hebrew. In addition, there's a tradition of using the initial of a deceased ancestor's name as a guide to choosing the baby name. Sometimes a 'world we live in' name is chosen for a Jewish baby because it's close to a Hebrew or maybe Yiddish name. That original name would likely be chosen to honour a deceased relative or maybe one still living (depending on what tradition is being followed). But I don't know what name Mindy might be derived from in Jewish culture.

BessieBoots · 03/04/2010 11:04

But Mindy from Mork and Mindy was lovely!

I think it's a great name, I'd like to be called Mindy.

mathanxiety · 02/04/2010 19:45

Thinkbabynames says it's short for Melinda, and of English origin. But I associate it with Mork and Mindy too . I don't know why it got so popular in the US or when.

Magaly · 02/04/2010 18:44

What's it short for Mathanxiety? Or, why is it Jewish? It's not a biblical name is it? I'm showing my age saying Nanu nanu instantly. It never occurred to me that it was a common name in America!

Magaly · 02/04/2010 18:43

nanu nanu.

MunchMummy · 02/04/2010 18:24

Mork and Mindy and a bit too close to Mingy

MamaVoo · 02/04/2010 18:18

Mork and Mindy here too. I don't think a person called Mindy could ever be taken seriously.

mathanxiety · 02/04/2010 17:56

Long Island, and not in a nice way.

babster · 02/04/2010 15:02

It's the name of the girl from Kick Ass - no weakling!

twosofar · 02/04/2010 14:35

It's a very Jewish name...don't know whether that is of relevance to you??

AllieW · 02/04/2010 11:10

Another who thinks of Mork and Mindy here. Too 70s American, in my view. Not at all keen.

BallpointPen · 01/04/2010 21:54

Mork and Mindy. I dislike it quite a bit. I didn't like Mork and Mindy either.

tummytickler · 01/04/2010 21:40

Mork and Mindy here too.
It is just is not a real name that can be taken seriously.
Mindy has such a bimbo feel to it.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 01/04/2010 20:19

Very little-girl-in-the-seventies. And not in a cool way.

She would, I think, find that some people didn't take her seriously simply on the basis of her name -- unfair but there you go. I would avoid.

I'm not keen.

It sounds the sort of name women who want to be all girly whirly like to call themselves, even though they're knocking on a bit - 56 going on 17.

ellesabe · 01/04/2010 20:02

Sorry it just reminds me of that woman in Friends who was engaged to Rachel's ex Barry!

notsochickchickchicken · 01/04/2010 09:23

I quite like it but then I wanted to call dd Missy.

HollyGoHeavily · 01/04/2010 08:55

Ok as a nickname for a little girl but I think it is a bit weak as a first name.

Patsy99 · 01/04/2010 08:44

Like it as a nickname, not as a proper name.

pitterpatterfeet · 01/04/2010 08:37

I know only of dogs with this name - and mork and mindy obviously

southeastastra · 01/04/2010 08:27

go for it!

5DollarShake · 01/04/2010 08:26

Mork and Mindy for me too. [/old]

Mindy is a nickname, and is not a name to be taken all that seriously.

I know a Mindela (American), known as Mindy. Actually, to me, Mindy is a very American name, but that might also be the Mork and Mindy connection.

Man, how young does Robin Williams look in dizzy's post?!
