Caspar or Cassius?

I see there's a thread on the name Cassius already, which has made me wonder which of these two names I prefer. I had been set on Caspar, but I know it's still quite heavily associated with the friendly ghost, which seems incredible given that it was a cartoon back in the seventies. People don't associate Tom with Thomas The Tank Engine, Ben with Ben 10 or Rory with a racing car, so why do some names get permanently stuck with their cartoon counterparts?

Anyhow, Caspar or Cassius, it would be interesting to see which one comes up tops with you discerning lot!

ps i know loads of you are going to hate them both!!!

I'm German and a Kasper is indeed a well known word used to describe a type of 'clown'. A Kasper Theater is a Punch & Judy theatre.

Personally I prefer Caspian or Cassius. The only reservation would be the nickname Cass, which sounds a little feminine to my ears.

sonniebonnie · 17/06/2010 11:13

A Kasper is a very popular German (punch & judy) clown. It is often used to call someone who is silly - "Du Kasper".

Bear that in mind when choosing the name, in case he ever spends time in German speaking countries in his life.

CakeandRoses · 17/06/2010 11:09

mamapea - we had Caspian as an alternative to what we ended up choosing for DS1 (Felix). It was the right decision as DS1 is very fair, cheeky and smiley and Caspian seems like a 'darker' name in a way.

This time though, even though we loved it (DH particularly) we felt Caspian might be too erm... pretentious/unusual/long (?) but felt Caspar might be a bit easier to live with. Having plumped for Casper do you think it was the right decision?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 16/06/2010 21:04

Cassius

or Marcus

or what about

Christian?

mamapea · 16/06/2010 21:02

I would have to say Casper as that is the name of DS2 although we debated both Cassius and Caspian for him too...

CakeandRoses · 14/06/2010 23:29

Audley - that's really good to know, thanks. And congrats on your 11 day old

I'm firmly in the 'a' camp - it seems more correct and easier to fend off the silly ghost comments too!

audley · 14/06/2010 20:14

only to add I nearly had a wobble about the spelling because almost everyone has spelt it with an 'e'...

audley · 14/06/2010 20:13

My 11 day old is Caspar, the few people we told were negative about it before he was born. Now he is here the people are either v. positive or don't comment! I am totally happy with our choice. My mum didn't approve at all but now is very proud to introduce him.

LadyThompson · 13/06/2010 12:56

Cassius is absolutely lovely. Caspar is nice, but as I am a sucker Roman names (so elegant), Cassius gets my vote.

tummytickler · 13/06/2010 10:47

Caspar.

CakeandRoses · 13/06/2010 01:09

Varmit - would love to know what you've decided...

Celly2010 - what reaction do you get to the name Casper (if you work out what people honestly think?)

We're pretty much decided on Caspar if DC2 is a boy. I love it so much that I sometimes worry I've got no perspective on it and we're going to saddle him with a name that lots of people will really dislike!

Celly2010 · 30/03/2010 11:03

I think you should go with Casper!!!!!!
But then I'm biased. my 6 month old is called Casper.
Good name. Anyone who tells you that the name you have chosen is horrible has probably called their child something really boring

CrankyTwanky · 30/03/2010 09:56

I had this exact predicament! DS was born in December and we thought Caspar after the Magi of the same name or Cassius after the boxer.
Went for something else Roman in the end, that is my father's/g'father's name. No help, sorry, but I'd go for Cassius, and keep Caspar for if you have a son around Christmas. (Although I'm not religious )

AllieW · 29/03/2010 19:15

Caspar is a correct spelling - it is one of the names attributed to one of the Three Wise Men (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_Magi). It probably slightly edges over Cassius unless he got the nn Cass I suppose.

varmit · 29/03/2010 11:41

Nice to see that Caspar, with an 'a', gets quite a few votes!

I know what you mean Josephine, it can really throw you when friends and family are negative about your name choices. I decided this time around to tell nobody, apart from the several hundred anonymous women on here of course!

I just have to persuade DH that Caspar's 'the one' now. Not easy when he prefers Max!

I LOVE Caspar (and I would spell it with an 'a' too)

It's high on my list, but unfortunately by Mum and Nanna hate it...and their opinion means a lot to me.

Perhaps I should stop asking them(!)

I love Caspar. Stylish. Cassius I find just desperately try-hard and pseudo.

LetThereBeRock · 28/03/2010 15:33

I love Caspar.
