My Wife Is Set On This Baby Name

Hi

I know this place is for ladies but don't shoot me down.

My wife and I are having our first child, a boy, in May and she is set on calling him Piers.

I have tried to suggest other names but she is having none of it!
I can't stand this name, in my mind I keep imagining Brighton Pier and then worse...Piers Morgan.

What can I do to persuade her on a different name? She just won't listen

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Can you agree that you choose the middle name, then you can pick something you think better and at least your child will have a choice to use his middle name when if he grows up to hate piers.

I know I always joke on threads like this that you get to name anyone you push out of your body but in all seriousness, I think it is not fair for one parent to unilaterally decide on something so important as the name. Jokes aside, it is selfish and saying that you don't matter. But you do. It's your child too.

If you really don't like it then you should just say so, and then the two of you should choose another name. Both parents need to like the names of their children, neither gets the casting vote IMO.

Piers was high on our list too but the Piers Morgan connection meant that we couldn't use it.

no Irish blood.

I have funnily enough suggested Nick in the past but she didn't like that.

what kind of a question is that, baldy?

cazzybabs · 27/03/2010 21:46

you could be slightly evil and say as soon as he is born you know he juts doesn't look like a piers...he looks like (insert prefered name) and then say never mind just when it had started to grow on me...maybe it will suit the next one...

[disclamer I will not be sued for if this results in divorce]

jkklpu · 27/03/2010 21:45

or Pearse if you have any Irish blood
One of my best friends is called this but I've always been rather about it. There are much better associations than Morgan, however, eg Piers Plowman. Could you negotiate it to a midle name

hellymelly · 27/03/2010 21:45

Piers.hmm.not a great choice I have to say, makes me think of rather weedy and prim little boy whose mummy never lets him get muddy, either that or a fat boorish drunken sloane in a wine bar.How about Nicholas instead?

Maffew · 27/03/2010 21:44

Then I'll think of James Bond. Okay it's not as bad but argh!
