My Wife Is Set On This Baby Name

Hi

I know this place is for ladies but don't shoot me down.

My wife and I are having our first child, a boy, in May and she is set on calling him Piers.

I have tried to suggest other names but she is having none of it!
I can't stand this name, in my mind I keep imagining Brighton Pier and then worse...Piers Morgan.

What can I do to persuade her on a different name? She just won't listen

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
sparkleshine · 27/03/2010 23:03

Not for me at all. Though maybe a middle name at a push.
She definately needs to discuss this seriously with u. Both parents need to like their childs name.
How would your child feel if he knew u hated his name...
Have u bought a baby name book and had a look through it? How about the internet for choosing names.

ravenAK · 27/03/2010 22:41

Middle name...?

Agree with her that you choose a first name you can both live with, & an additional name each.

Bucking the trend, though, I had a great Uni mate called Piers & so actually rather like it!

My grandmother insisted on calling her second son Richard. Grandad thought it was ghastly, who knows why, 'yes dear'ed all through the pregnancy then went to the Registry Office & triumphantly put Alan on the birth cert.

30 years later my uncle was still answering to either Alan or Dick, depending which parent he was talking to.

Much better to agree a compromise!

Maggie00 · 27/03/2010 22:37

I like it. I don't think of Piers Morgan immediately like everybody else seems to though.

Quattrocento · 27/03/2010 22:31

Think it's sensible for both partners to have a right of veto

seashore · 27/03/2010 22:29

Hi, I do sympathise because a few times now friends have picked names (which secretly I didn't like, not that that matters, but either did their dhs) I vote that you just show her this thread, BrahmsThirdRacket's comment should finish off her determination to stick with Monsieur Morgan's name.

Good luck.

I just keep thinking of peirs in the cot or piers round the corner

piprabbit · 27/03/2010 22:21

Piers? Examples of the word Piers in day-to-day usage.

Piers Morgan

Sarfend Pier

Piers through the window

After 10 pints of lager, Jack and John are mighty piers.

No. Please. No.

(BTW - the spelling mistakes are deliberate....)

LulaFortuna · 27/03/2010 22:20

Piers is the sort of name on would associate with a City lawyer... does your wife really want that for your first born?

Ivykaty44 · 27/03/2010 22:18

why don't you let her call the baby peirs and then just call baby Tom or clare and not worry about what is on the birth certificate - lots of people have doen this for centuries now, most probably in your position.

My mil is called Megan but every one in her family called her Noddy. In my family we have the same my boyfriend is named anthony and soem people call him Michael -his middle name and others call him tony and others call him Bill?

LeSingeEstDansLarbre · 27/03/2010 22:17

i like ladies.

LeSingeEstDansLarbre · 27/03/2010 22:17

no it's fine, i just don't know who you htink i am.

Slambang · 27/03/2010 22:11

Hi Maff - Talk to her calmly. Tell her straight. She is not going to pop or swoon just because she is pg. She can take it!

BTW = please don't call us ladies. Women, mums, parents anything but laydees

piscesmoon · 27/03/2010 22:09

Insist she changes-you both have to like it and she has to compromise. I didn't have any of my favourites-we had to work hard to find something in common. (tell her that if she doesn't compromise ,it will be your turn next time).

BrahmsThirdRacket · 27/03/2010 22:08

Piers is a shit name, and both parents must at least not hate their kid's name.

Undercovamutha · 27/03/2010 22:04

If you HATE the name, you must insist on a rethink. We had a shortlist of about 3 or 4 names for both of our DCs. We both agreed with DD, but not with DS. I got the deciding vote (as I had just given birth!) but it was a name that was on our shortlist - just not DH's absolute favourite.

I could never go for a name that I knew DH couldn't stand. And as for Piers......

BoysAreLikeDogs · 27/03/2010 22:03

(sorry LeSinge was overcome by nosiness)

Tyson86 · 27/03/2010 22:02

Why has she had the casting vote, did you have the choice if it was a girl?
You have to both like the name, if you dislike it this much then it is very unfair for her to use it.

Missus84 · 27/03/2010 22:01

Pierce is a better compromise on Piers.

rabbit54 · 27/03/2010 21:59

Maffew you cant call your child a name you dont like. You have to find one you agree on. Both father and mother have equal right if you are going to bring up child together. Unless there is some other deal going whereby "she" does all the laundry, cleaning, child care and most cooking and shopping and goes to work in which case she can call the child any name she likes?

Skegness · 27/03/2010 21:59

Disagree with the "she labours therefore she gets carte blanche on choice of names" view. While I would fully support the labouring woman getting the final say in the event of a mild disagreement on names that both partners like, names that one partner actively hates should not be used, in my view. Further, I agree with you that Piers is a truly dreadful name. Does she really understand that you HATE it? Have you had a serious conversation about it? (My partner was so jokey about names that I sometimes found it hard to work out what he really thought!)

thedollshouse · 27/03/2010 21:58

We are going for Rory, Tobias was also high on our list.

Maffew · 27/03/2010 21:56

hellymelly - no she just says she loves the name

OP posts:
hellymelly · 27/03/2010 21:54

does she have a crush on Piers Brosnan? Also I have to say that it is usual for both parents to have to agree on a name (hence my dd getting to six weeks and still being "baba")

Maffew · 27/03/2010 21:53

what did you go with in the end?
