My Wife Is Set On This Baby Name

Hi

I know this place is for ladies but don't shoot me down.

My wife and I are having our first child, a boy, in May and she is set on calling him Piers.

I have tried to suggest other names but she is having none of it!
I can't stand this name, in my mind I keep imagining Brighton Pier and then worse...Piers Morgan.

What can I do to persuade her on a different name? She just won't listen

My grandparents had a standoff for a whole year over my dad's name after he was born -- GM liked his first name, Neil, and GF hated it, and called him by his second instead, Geoffrey. GF won, thank god (Neil. . . shudder).

Really NOT a good idea for one parent to refuse to compromise.

(Though mind you, my grandparents had the kind of relationship where he swore at her, she threw a ketchup bottle at him, he ducked and it splattered all the way down the wall, and it was still there 3 years later when they sold the house because both of them refused to clean it up. Weirdly, they stayed together all their lives.)

y did u write that??

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 31/03/2010 07:09

Read the whole thread, people. Please.

vess · 31/03/2010 07:06

I know a grown-up Piers who hates his name.
If you have to name him that, at least go for the other spelling (Pierce).

englishpatient · 30/03/2010 21:09

Peers is another spelling option.

LaDiDaDi · 30/03/2010 13:06

Names have to be a joint choive imo.

For ds I wanted Sebastian and dp wanted George. We both, for various personal associations, vetoed each others top choice but we both love his compromise name now.

2old4thislark · 30/03/2010 13:00

And I am very grateful that my dad put his foot down because my mum had some really hideous names lined up for me!

2old4thislark · 30/03/2010 12:59

Can't get beyond Piers Morgan.......urrrggghhh! Put your foot down - it HAS to be a name you both agree on.

sophieandbelly · 30/03/2010 12:03

why does she get to choose thats not nice, y dont u pick a ramdom crap name and say right this is what i am calling him !!!i am sure she wouldnt let u, put ur foot down, its ur baby to!!

Lovethesea · 29/03/2010 20:08

Same here - DH and I both had a veto on names we hated. Made a list of all possibles and took off anything we individually couldn't stand. Then we mused over time until DD's name quite surprisingly rose to the top.

You have to tell the world this child's name and if you hate it he will eventually cotton on that you are less than keen on it.

I lost some of my potential favourite names when DH vetoed them - but then I also avoided some names DH would have chosen that I hate or have bad associations for.

Piers I don't like at all - it has a certain pinstripe style that isn't me and makes me think of a real stereotyped city soul.

My dh and I are expecting #2 in September. We just repeated the naming approach we took first time round. Each of us spent 2 weeks independently going through names picking our top boys and girls names and then presented them to each other on an evening out with no distractions. We had an open discussion on what we do and don't like. If either of us really disliked a name we'd talk through why and then rule it out and move on.

Dh had 40 names on his list and I had 11 some of which I was quite attached to, but if he didn't like it then we need to keep looking. We included names, meanings, origin, ranking and possible nicknames.

I would try and discuss with your wife that you both have to live with this name for the rest of all your lives so its important to agree

Maybe suggest setting aside some time for a similar naming chat. This way your wife will see that you are keen to be part of the process and you are bringing more than one alternative suggestion to the table.

Its not easy, we were lucky that we had similar versions of our first son's name high up on our lists, #2 is harder.

Rockbird · 28/03/2010 23:05

And Pierre is better than Piers??

kalo12 · 28/03/2010 22:18

what about Pierre?

SparklyJules · 28/03/2010 22:14

Erk, no, what a dreadful name! I agree with the others - you have to choose a name you both agree on. What about Peter? It's not a million miles away from Piers is it?

Quattrocento · 28/03/2010 22:11

Link doesn't work now because thread was rightly deleted.

Elsa123 · 28/03/2010 16:43

My DH likes Piers and I don't...LOL! Role reversal! I'm also trying to gently persuade him away from Bronte (for a girl), Neela because it just doesn't go with our surname and Giles- see Piers. I have no advice, just sharing .

Rockbird · 28/03/2010 12:09

Just for anyone reading this who might actually be considering the name, my BIL is Piers and it never occurred to me to think of Morgan.

Tyson86 · 28/03/2010 12:08

Why wont that link work now??

piprabbit · 28/03/2010 12:03

Not sure how he thought a thread about baby names was going to turn into a raunchy, confession-filled pirate-sex thread?

How odd.

Blimey, I thought the other one was pretty feeble as well earlier.

I don't think they've got the hang of this troll lark at all.

Quattrocento · 28/03/2010 00:22

this is another board raid thread If you go from there to the other board, you'll see that some nut on there started this thread.

ROFL at cat. Indeed. Ponderously unfunny bunch over there.

legscrossed · 28/03/2010 00:15

just agree you both have a vito..........n thats yours!

catinthehat2 · 28/03/2010 00:15

Q any links or pics? Must say that was the troll equivalent of erectile dysfunction.

Quattrocento · 28/03/2010 00:06

Just to let you know that Maffew is a very dull troll from a US forum who have been overexcited by the reports of pirate sex etc on MN and organised a board raid.

Maffew, the first rule of trollery on MN is that you have to be funny. You failed.
