ok...for some weird reason NO ONE seems to be calling their baby girls this, and i love it - it's also really one of my only girl options now (6 months). i don't want to use a popular name but i'm worried there's a v obvious reason why agatha isn't a popular option....

be honest - what are your thoughts????

It's a wonderful name, much underused. We considered it for our first child. I know a fabulous, glamorous and beautiful Agatha, known as Aga, so it has very positive connotations for me.

If you like Viking sounding names, what about Helga or Hilda. Frankly I think they are both pretty awful too, but Hildy is alright. Ada is lovely.

I'm sorry, but I hate it, and so do lots of other people I'm sure, that's why it's unpopular. It's like calling a boy Egbert or ffoulkes.

It's a real aunt name, hard sounding, solid, suits Miss Trunchbull perfectly. Listen to Salvadory's friend! Gertrude sounds pretty in comparison, at least you could call her Trudy.

I like Agatha - apparently it means good or honourable - very nice.

I also like Ada, Amelia and Edith.

I love agatha, work with a lovely one, bubbly attractive in her early 40's, however she detests her name and still insists that calling a child this would almost be child abuse due to the hassle she got as a child.

I love Agatha - it's absolutely gorgeous. And Agatha Christie was wonderful - 70 books over 6 decades, what a fab person to share a name with.

I like Agatha.

A friend had it as their name but then had a boy.

I also like Agnes (for DS2 - doh!) and no-one is using that either. (reads on) oh I see you liek that too lisbeth - great minds eh!

I have posted this before but a (former) colleague, on hearing it was a name we favoured for DS2, said "Good thing he was a boy then!"

I forbore to make rude remarks about her choice of names because I'm nice really.

i think grumpy old lady names are the next big thing though

i mean, there are an awful lot of pretty (and genuinely lovely) girl names out there, but we have run out of them. there can only be so many flower-based names (i too have one)

OR 1950s names will come back - barbara, susan, jane, janet (secretly LOVE janet, will never be allowed it).... i mean, you mum's friends' names.

we've had victoriana/edwardian, some flapper names (pearl etc), so surely these have to come up at some point?

Oh dear, I think its awful - harsh sounding and reminds me of frumpy old ladies. But clearly I am in the minority!
