I've seen an unusual girls name, can't get it out of my head, what do you think?

First a disclaimer in that I don't know if this name is spelt correctly, if it's foreign, if it's made up or anything. But I think I like it! What do you think of it? It's Remynie.

I work with a woman in her 40's named Romany; she's called Romy. I like it a lot but then she's a very nice and pretty person, so good associations and all that.

snowshoes · 27/03/2010 09:44

My eldest goes to school with a girl called Rhomany. I think it's very pretty.

I would hear it and wonder whether she was perhaps conceived on holiday in Rimini, only her parents couldn't spell - or wanted something more 'youneeq'.

expatinscotland · 27/03/2010 02:06

nooka, her surname is also French, and she is forever getting French people prattling to her in French from the get go, and whilst she has some French, she is all Scottish so she has learned to spill out her story in French quickly.

It made for some funniness on the phone and 'Ah, Ecosse!'

nooka · 27/03/2010 02:02

expat I would assume a French connection with Nathalie rather than made-up-ness. Nothing wrong with variation IMO, it's the randomness to some names I think odd.

nooka · 27/03/2010 01:56

It makes me think of indigestion. It doesn't seem to exist as a real name - Googling comes up with one person, and then this thread pretty much.

I have a really unusual name and I like it, but I do think having a name that nobody has heard of, can spell or pronounce is a bit of a burden.

expatinscotland · 27/03/2010 01:46

I had a boss called Nathalie.

Some may think her parents had thought to spell it differently to make it 'unique' but her father is Quebecois.

expatinscotland · 27/03/2010 01:43

That was a funny movie, jabber.

I gave our daughter a name that is familiar here in Scotland. Well, I didn't really give it her. She was supposed to be called Fiona. But after she was born I became very ill. I remember the moment she was born I was surprised very much that she was a girl, and that her eyes were very blue.

But as I was so ill there was no well baby unit so she went to SCBU. There the midwives looked after her. And when I was well enough to look after her the midwives would still dote on her, and say she was a very good baby her, and had we a name for her?

I said she'd none. So there was one Irish midwife who said, 'Well, if you ask me, she is Helen. So she is a Scot she is Eilidh.'

So we thought to call her this.

But then a very wise Canadian woman in the unit told me her niece was named this, but people in Canada would say 'eyelid'.

So we Anglicized it, for I am American by birth and my children are dual nationals by birth.

And she is Aillidh.

Sometimes when folks give a different spelling it is for a reason.

FWIW, she is every inch a Scottish Helen.

By chance my mother's middle name is Helene, the French way for her mother was French.

And if there is a face none would forget it is hers.

jabberwocky · 27/03/2010 01:36

Romy and Michele?

mummiedearest · 27/03/2010 01:28

dont know why the whole world seems to want to give kids names that nobody knows how to spell,or pronounce. imagine being the child whos constantly asked. how do you spell that?
Sorry but I go into the schools and see all sorts of ridiculous names eg Kai, Jay-cub, Tyler-Skye etc it just goes on and on. For Gods sake have a heart. Kids got enough to deal with. Its just cruel

CocoaCloset · 27/03/2010 01:11

Meant to say Renee is also lovely, and fairly similar. I'm sure a 'celeb' has just named a child that, but can't remember who.

CocoaCloset · 27/03/2010 01:08

Romily/ Romilly is really pretty, not sure about the other names though. Didnt realise the pc brigrade were on the lookout either, must be a quiet time of day for them.

expatinscotland · 27/03/2010 00:59

The only Remy I know is a French boy, born in France to a French father and a Scottish mother, now living through here. It's gorgeous on him. He speaks French to his father.

On a non-French boy, well, it's like Lachlan on a non-Scottish boy - wannabe, tries too hard, pretender.

Sorry, that's harsh but that's how some folks would think round here, but never tell you unless you were somehow considered a local.

expatinscotland · 27/03/2010 00:55

The East of here is so beautiful. Perthshire is so beautiful.

Too bad about the people.

[runs FAST and ducks!]

CheerfulYank · 27/03/2010 00:54

I think Remony is quite pretty, and have always liked the nn Remy due to my teenage obsession with the movie The Big Easy.

I can't speak for ggirl but on my part no offence intended BarryKent, sorry.
(it's just hard to describe the pronunciation of words when we can't hear eachother, and it's well known that native speakers of japanese change the L for an R when speaking english, hardly racist really, but sorry if it offended anyone)

Sounds like a cough mixture.

LaRagazzaInglese · 24/03/2010 20:55

Lemony in japanese accent = Remony
I like it

madwomanintheattic · 24/03/2010 20:51

i like romilly/ romily? and romy and remy.

i've never heard of remony tbh... it sounds as though it might be a contraction of something else - i can't imagine what though!

it doesn't seem to be grabbing me either way at the mo...

Yay for snot! (didn't think I'd be typing that tonight...) as a positive vote for the unusually spelt Remynie!

Anyone else like it?

I think it's a truly gorgeous name and I might nick it for my next, if it's a girl!
