There really is no name immune from being turned into a nickname, is there?

Ds2 told me today that there is a girl in his class called Olivia who gets called Oblivion.

I heard of an Amber being called Amberger.

Is no name safe?

no but good thinking

QuestionsAnswered · 23/03/2010 15:11

Custardo, did she never get called 'O'?

Tortington · 23/03/2010 15:05

Kay.

i had a friend called Kay. never shortnened.

piprabbit · 23/03/2010 15:03

I knew a Routh at school.
She was known as Roof, or Roofless.

arolf · 23/03/2010 15:03

my sister is Cordelia, and that never got nicknamed until she started work. I'm a Flora and was occasionally called Flora margarine until I injured someone quite badly for calling me that . then at one place of work I was wee Flo.

Jane doesn't get shortened much

AandO · 23/03/2010 15:02

My sister is called Sarah and we call her Sares, and my mom calls her Saresibabe.

My niece is called Mae and my sister calls her Mabel, or Mabelina, or even Maybe she's born with it!

All names have a nn.

Rockbird · 23/03/2010 14:58

Er, I beg to differ I'm a Sarah and I get Sare, Sares, Sally, Sally Ann and Sal. DH has only ever called me Sare, don't remember him ever using my full name and my brother always always calls me Sal. In fact my parents are the only ones to use Sarah.

UniS · 23/03/2010 14:51

Sarah is seldom shortened.
ditto paul.

Fimbow · 23/03/2010 14:31

Just looked at your profile - you're safe!! It is funny though as my friend has 3 kids and is ever so slightly bonkers too!

BigBadMummy · 23/03/2010 14:25

fimbow I am panicing now!

Fimbow · 23/03/2010 14:20

Ha my friend is called Tanya or T never ever Tan, maybe its YOU!

Lancelottie · 23/03/2010 14:18

My cousin is John.

He gets called Boggy

BigBadMummy · 23/03/2010 14:14

Anybody shortens my name of Tanya to Tan and they get thumped.

But then everybody calls me T.

Except the select few who call me TT but I can't tell you with that is

Fel1x · 23/03/2010 14:12

I've never had a nn and always wanted one! My name is Sarah

WhoIsAsking · 23/03/2010 14:03

Siân is very difficult to shorten. It tends to get lengthed to Siâny

(although at work it's "Shazzer" and my uncle calls me Stanley)

I'll shut up I think.

notquitenormal · 23/03/2010 13:53

Oddly, nobody ever shortens my name, Michelle, despite the that that it has so many potential nicknames.

I've never expressed a preference either way.

Maybe I just don't seem like a nicknamy kinda person.

I am Lauren and my parents thought it was a name you couldn't really have a nn for.

L
La
Larby
Laurs
Laur
and some other unique ones that aren't necessarily descended from name!

TulipsInTheRain · 23/03/2010 13:36

well my don't have any logical nicknames... and were in fact picked on that basis!

i'm sure they'll find ways as teens though

pixiestix · 23/03/2010 13:35

Ooh, how about "May" - I can't think of a nn for that!

notsoteenagemum · 23/03/2010 13:19

In my experience there is always a nn to be found,
by a natural shortening eg Jonathan to Jon/Jonnie,
by removing an 'ie' sound like Katie to Kate/Kat,
by adding an 'ie' sound like Rose to Rosie.

Dh is the worst nn creator, his phonebook is full of Daz's, Loz's , Jonesy's and even an Am's for Amy!

PanicMode · 23/03/2010 13:19

My name is very, very plain (three letters, though can be four, fairly old fashioned....) and my school NN bore NO resemblance at all to my real name, so I guess you are right!

pixiestix · 23/03/2010 12:52

Mum2T - we have a Celia in our office and everone calls her Ceals!

diddl · 23/03/2010 08:18

Never had my name shortened, but had nns re my height (or lack thereof)

piscesmoon · 23/03/2010 08:07

I think that it is quite nice that it is one area that parent's can't control! You can't stop it-especially if your DC likes it. I call all my DSs by their full names, but I am just about the only person who does.
(I know someone who called their DS Ian-on the grounds that it couldn't be shortened and he is known as 'E'!)
