There really is no name immune from being turned into a nickname, is there?

Ds2 told me today that there is a girl in his class called Olivia who gets called Oblivion.

I heard of an Amber being called Amberger.

Is no name safe?

Bob (thanks Blackadder)
Woo (because I couldn't pronounce Roo from Winnie the Pooh)
Woo Woo (as above)
And, my father still calls me...

My cousin is Ian. My aunt and uncle chose it so that it wouldn't be shortened, after all what can you do with Ian?

Call him 'E' of course! Drives my aunt nuts but my cousin doesn't seem too bothered.

Bea is a nickname in itself but maybe Buzzy
Zoe = Zo, Zo-Zo

I thought my name would be difficult to make a nn out of - Clare - but over the years I've been called Clarence, Cloggon (something to do with my dancing 'prowess' I think ) and dh calls me Clarey! So for my ds's we chose long names that could be shortened: Jonathan is Jonny (has been since before he was born), and Sebastian (who occassionally gets his name shortened to Seb or (by me) seb-seb!!!). Sebastian is ADAMANT that he's Sebastian though... I fear the world thinks differently, though!!

Nick names are inevitable, I think, so it's best to just roll with it, really! At least my poor old Mum doesn't get as much grief with hers anymore - Audrey would get shortened to Odders - she hated it!

I am sure it will get shortned to Hana in time, however DD is making v sure she calls herself Rahana all the time, so her friends are sort of picking up on this, if she does eventually get called Hana, it could prove trick as my sister is called Hannah too

IME every name gets shortened/changed by the end of Year 2 at school. Could cope with all the obvious Eds, Ols, Sams and Matts but was surprised at Jaw for George...

Helen is actually very easy to abbreviate, unfortunately. Just doesn't occur to nice mothers!

My Daughter is called Rahana, and nobody has found a way to shorten or lenghten it yet!!
however my mum called me Helen because she thought that could no be shortened , but I get called all sorts

My Mum didn't want mine or my brothers name to be shortened so called us Marie and Dean.

I never had a nickname in school and felt quite jealous about it. As an adult I have sometimes been called 'ree'.

My brother was called Deano or Dean the bean!

My DH and I want to pick a long name and then also have few options for nicknames which he can pick when he gets older.

Both of my children have 3 syllable names which can very easily be shortened and commonly are. Many short forms of DD's name are used as 'proper' names.

However ... no-one ever calls DD by any shortened version of her name because it simply does not suit her. She just is her full name.

DS's name is shortened by a few, but only a few and he throws a strop so they don't do it any more. I'm sure that he will switch to the short name when he's older, but right now he too always has his full name.

I have a short name. No-one calls me by anything else more than once!

My son, who is called [a name very similar to] Matthew has acquired the nickname 'Cave Man.'

Kids are going to be kids.

I call my daughter boo-boo. Her 'real' name is nothing like boo-boo. Sometimes some odd nickname just suits them.

'Cave Man' doesn't suit my son, though...unless he's carrying a club or something at school that I don't know about.

A lot of school nicknames have nothing to do with your first name anyway. I had a "Mac" surname and a younger sister, so I was known as Big Mac and her as Little Mac

......and that was just the teachers....

My neice has a great name- Amelie . When she was little she called herself 'Ali' and that still sticks. She's also Ams, Spam, Spambo and 'She who must be obeyed' .

Nope, Leo is a name in its own right. DS is named for my great grandfather.
