What do you think of Avis as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.
My Mum's middle name was Avis, She was a lovely, kind lady who was born in 1924. Wonder when the name will come back into fashion?

have to say when i read the thread title i did think you were referring to the car hire people!

then i noted it was in baby names.

i tend to come on these threads and tell peopoe that if they love the name then use it, it doesn't matter what others think,. but in this case, i'm really not so sure.... avis is just so ubiquitous now with car rentals

stressheaderic · 22/03/2010 19:46

If you went with it, I bet even you would succumb to saying "you know, as in the car hire" when spelling the name over the phone...

denisej · 21/03/2010 20:21

I too absolutely love this name but have always thought the reaction would be of car rental and sadly this seems the case. Doesn't have to hold with 'your' Avis though - she could make it her own.
Another suggestion on a similar theme is Ailbhe - an Irish name pronounced Alva which I think is beautiful too.

Tap2 · 21/03/2010 20:15

I love love love it. I have an Ava but I tend to lengthen it to Avis and my all-time hero, Gram Parsons mother and sister were called Big Avis and Little Avis. Love it.

I met a lovely guy from Argentina called Ariel. It is a good name in itself but I just couldn't help thinking of the detergent.

Shame really, he was gorgeous, sigh

BouncingTurtle · 21/03/2010 17:30

Car hire sorry.

I love the name Flora, but never would use it because of the margerine!

ZZZenAgain · 21/03/2010 17:28

the car hire thing is unfortunate

mathanxiety · 21/03/2010 17:26

It does say Car Hire to me. I know an older lady with the name. I like it, like Avery too, and love Aveline (French name) and Avelina.

Mavis is bleeeugh imo.

ZZZenAgain · 21/03/2010 17:19

I only knew one old lady with that name

ginnny · 21/03/2010 17:17

I had an Auntie Avis when I was young. She was mad as a box of frogs. So that name always makes me think of a nutty old lady
Ava is nice though - not sure about Mavis, reminds me of Coronation Street.

posieparker · 21/03/2010 17:15

CAR HIRE

TrillianAstra · 21/03/2010 17:13

Before I noticed the area this was posted in I thought you were looking for car hire recommendations.

mejon · 21/03/2010 16:49

chimchar - I know an Avis Davies too. I wonder if its the same one!

I'd probably stick to using it as a middle name tbh - it is quite old fashioned but not as appealing as 'old' names like Mabel, Edie etc.

Aviendha · 21/03/2010 16:33

If you are really keen I would suggest using it as a middle name, for all the already mentioned reasons.

I dont think it will come into fashion for a long time yet, its too close to the car rental firm and that will put off most people I think.

jellybeans · 21/03/2010 15:43

Car rental.

Maggie00 · 21/03/2010 12:51

Put an M in front of it!

Maggie00 · 21/03/2010 12:50

Car Hire.

Shaz10 · 21/03/2010 12:15

I thought this was asking for car hire reviews!

blogpage · 21/03/2010 12:14

Airports and car rentals.

nancydrewrocks · 21/03/2010 12:13

car hire - sorry.

theagedparent · 21/03/2010 12:12

Prefer Mavis.

blametheparents · 21/03/2010 12:04

Care rental,
maybe with a brother called Hertz.

It is a nice name, but will be associated with car rental now.

Ava is nice though

Rindercella · 21/03/2010 12:00

Car hire is the first thing that springs to mind.
