Ok please don't flame me, I'm in between appointments for root canal treatment and I need a distraction I'm in pain!
What do you think of the girls name Vivi? How would you spell it other than above. Am thinking of pronouncing it VeeVee rather than Vivi as in Vivian. Reminds me of Fifi or Didi, but think it's a bit more grown up if that makes sense? Thumbs up or down?

Oh, yes... Genevieve...

that's LOVELY.

harimosmummy · 21/03/2010 14:04

I looked at it and promounced it VEEVEE.

Lovely NN, but would have a longer name... Vivienne??

allyfe · 21/03/2010 14:01

I'm not keen on Vivienne, and think vivi would end up being vivi and not vee-vee. I do love Genevieve, and Veevee would make more sense as a nickname for that. In my opinion, by giving a full name, your daughter can choose if she wants vee-vee through her life or if she wants a more 'adult' name as she grows up. If you just give her Vee-vee she has no choice. And, I must admit,as a stand alone name I hate Vivi.

MercyMe · 21/03/2010 07:25

I love the nn Vivi, but would probably use Vivienne as longer name. Also really like Violet - could possibly use Vivi as nn with this?

randomimposter · 20/03/2010 21:01

lovely as a NN, but not IMO as a stand alone. Lacks gravitas.
LOVE Genevieve
Like Vivienne
Violet is also ok.

MadameCastafiore · 20/03/2010 15:19

Sounds like a name you would allow your child to use instead of fanny or vagina!

TakeLovingChances · 20/03/2010 15:11

What about Vivica?

There's an actress called Vivica Fox. I've always thought it was a lovely name.

Gladioli - yes, you're right re the male spelling.

Female is Viviene, Vivienne, Viviane, etc. Beautiful names, especially the 'e' versions (IMO).

Vivienne is on our list if we have a second DD (don't even have one yet, but that name is sorted if we do). I actually really love Vivi as a nn for it.

wastwinsetandpearls · 20/03/2010 11:46

sounds like a tampon brand or maybe female condoms.

GladioliBuckets · 20/03/2010 11:43

I would be tempted to go for Vivienne Veronica so the nickname would be her initials VV. We nearly had a BB short for Beatrix + our B-beginning surname (but she was a he).

Isn't Vivian the male spelling?

grovebuster · 20/03/2010 10:59

Thanks for all the opinions - I know what you mean about it not being a proper name... Think I'll go with one of hte traditional names, and use it as a nickname - then when she's older she can choose which she wants to use

Just read mimcomum has already mentioned Tamara Beckwith having a Vivi..oops!

CinderellaRach · 20/03/2010 10:14

A lovely family friend of ours is called Vivi(although it's short for Vivienne).
I love it!I'd have something like that if I was having a girl(expecting ds2).
Also Tamara Beckwith has a little girl called Violet but always calls her Vivi. It's a pretty girls name.

mimcomum · 20/03/2010 10:01

Hi again Grovebuster

See my earlier post - correction: Tamara Beckwith named her little girl Violet but calls her Vivi. Link to article below:

displayuntilbestbefore · 20/03/2010 09:49

Yes, I'm afraid I also thought of vivisection when I saw OP but I think Vivienne or Genevieve are very pretty.

mimcomum · 20/03/2010 09:47

Hi Grovebuster

Google this to be sure but I think I recall that Tamara Beckwith (remember her?) married an Italian guy in recent years and they had a baby daughter whom they christened Valentina but they call her Vivi. Dunno if that helps with your decision...:-)

Viviene is a lovely, lovely name.

There is a character called Viviane in a book called Divine Secrets of the Ya-Yay Sisterhood (set in the American Deep South, to give you some context), and she is universally known as Vivi.

I always assumed it was pronounced Vi-vee (being short for Viviane, and all).

I think Vivi is a cute nn, but definitely not an actual name.

fatzak · 20/03/2010 09:11

It's quite a common name in Greece - my friend's daughter is called Vivi, short for Paraskevi which means Friday.

SoupDragon · 20/03/2010 09:02

Sounds like a fluffi euphemism for vulva/vagina.

Bumnoise · 20/03/2010 08:59

Vivienne is so pretty love it!

dizzydixies · 20/03/2010 08:58

Vivienne lovely - Vivi not so much - too try hard, too nicknamey and unfinished, sorry

nooka · 20/03/2010 06:09

Personally I'm afraid I think that Vivi is really fairly awful. Vivienne, Vivienne/Vivien and Genevieve are all lovely though. Vivi just seems awfully twee. A nice nickname for a toddler, and that's about it.

SnotBaby · 19/03/2010 22:57

Yes sorry grovebuster, first thing to pop into my head!

Maggie00 · 19/03/2010 22:53

I love Vivien, but not Vivi.
