Why is it so difficult to pick a boys name!

I can't go for anything too way out as this baby will be brought up in Glasgow as well as probably preferring make up to football, as will have 3 big sisters.

Therefore be gentle on my choice of names. Thanks.

Archie
Austin
James
Ben
John or Johny

Not sure if Austin is just a bit unique for us. Also reminds me of Austin Powers.

Opinions welcome.

Archie - too now, will date
Austin - really horrible, sorry. Also, it reminds me of Austin Healy which is not nice.
James - good name but no-one will think, "wow, nice"
Ben - good name
John or Johny - really like. Would spell it Johnny though

brimfull · 18/03/2010 19:48

james
john/jonny
lovely names

Phoenix · 18/03/2010 19:44

I know a baby Jonny (Jonathan) and a baby Austin. I love Austin. Jonny is ok but i don't like John, even though it is dh's name.

My ds1 middle name is James so love that too.

Like Archie and Ben

My ds' are Lewis and Noah.

SnailWhaleTail · 18/03/2010 19:33

It is hard naming a baby before it's born isn't it! When we meet an adult Hugh we always engage in mutual appreciation of the name so maybe they all are on comission...

Fwiw my Hugh is also known as Shuggy Buggy Bee, Shuggy Buggles or just The Bug so beware comedy nicknames suited to babies.

I am hopeful that he'll choose to use Hugh as an adult though.

antoinettechigur · 18/03/2010 18:18

Sorry I if I put you out with the p word. It is just that to me, and maybe only to me, Archie has that kind of feel of try hard old man "chic". There used to be a big issue cartoon about 2 media type parents and their kids called "Orlando and Archie and their Terribly Smug Parents". Maybe I have an irrational prejudice from there so don't mind me.

mathanxiety · 18/03/2010 17:06

Austin, James and John. Jonas is a Lithuanian variant of John. Jonah has a similar-ish sound but not the same name.

Elliott might be a bit girly for Glasgow.

colie · 18/03/2010 16:44

sweetkitty- Elliot reminds me of Billy Elliot. Though I do think it is a lovely name but I know there is no way my partner would have it either.

Oh and if Ds's friends shortened it to Elli, not sure how good that would be when lots of girls are now called Elli.

Oh I could go on and on. Oh well, I have 12 weeks for inspiration to hit me.

sweetkitty · 18/03/2010 13:56

I know and Austin from Glasgow got called Ozzy though.

Hugh/Hughie is nice too

Elliot was always our "boys" name but DP has gone off it, says it's too poncey for round here

colie · 18/03/2010 10:23

Archie pretentious. Still trying to get over that. Can't think of much pretentiousness in a good old fashioned Glasgow name!! I didn't realise it was becoming popular.
Though Jellybean, Archie reminds me of a dull balding 50 year old man.

I still like Austin but don't think it will go down too well in Glasgow.

I love Euan but Dh doesn't.I wanted to call Dc3 Euan but she was a girl. My friend has a cat called Alfie (after the eastenders character). That has put me off Alfie.

I think calling a baby Hugh is putting me off the name. Though, 12 years ago I could never have imagined calling a baby Jack.

This boy naming mallarkey is getting to be too much for me.

Hoping for inspiration once baby arrives.

Archie... really really dislike, far too trendy, may get called 'archibald'
Austin ...like it
James...ok, bit boring, not keen on the 'plural' sounding bit
Ben...like
John or Johny ...really dislike, reminds me of dull balding 50 year old men.
Hugh...really dislike esp on a baby/child.

SkinnyLattePlease · 18/03/2010 06:20

Colie - that would be Archie McPherson - football commentator extrodinaire!
How about Archer? Friends have just called their son this name?
From our list for DS2 you could choose from:
Callum
Angus
Finlay
Hamish
Duncan
Iain is the gaelic for John, so not the same name.
DS1 is Euan.

P.S. Rugby player is Austin Healey!

P.P.S. Iain Hugh XXXX does have a sort of gravitas about it. I could imagine a judge or a Prime Minister with those names!

nooka · 18/03/2010 05:20

My dd is named after two great-grandmothers. Personally I think that grandparents is a bit too close a relation to be named after. But I like John and Hugh best of your choices. What about Jonathon rather than John, so it's a bit less your FIL's name?

BaDaBing · 17/03/2010 23:58

What about Alfie?

antoinettechigur · 17/03/2010 23:43

sorry I am probably just being too analytical about Archie.

and my posts.

SalFresco · 17/03/2010 22:34

I prefer Huey to Hugh. But DH wouldn't let me name DS2 after the lead singer from Fun Lovin Criminals......on whom I have ginormous crush...!

colie · 17/03/2010 22:26

Not sure where Austin comes from. Dh said there is a rugby player whose first name is Austin. Not that I know anything about rugby.

antoinettechigur - never thought of Archie as pretentious. Just thought of is as an old fashioned scottish name. I could imagine a football commentator being called Archie.

I am far too old to know about Glasgow clubs, but thanks for the nod. That is Austin off the list.

Everyone seems to like Hugh. Will need to work on Dh.

pointydog · 17/03/2010 22:08

where does austin come from? I cam eacross a baby called austin recently. Just think of austin powers.

antoinettechigur · 17/03/2010 21:51

Isn't Austin's a gay club in Glasgow? Some teasing potential (but then many names have that).

Archie - nice in some ways but, hard to say this without sounding rude, it sounds a bit pretentious. Sorry.

The rest are lovely. Especially Hugh.

weepootle · 17/03/2010 21:41

Whichever you go for they're all nice names. Hugh is definitely my favourite, dd has a lovely little Hugh in her reception class.

colie · 17/03/2010 21:01

Thanks everyone.

I am not really sure what the popular names in Glasgow are at the minute., so thanks for that sweetkitty. I am still in Merseyside.

I quite like Hugh now, I think old fashioned names are coming back into style. Like Jack was always an old mans name when I was young younger. Now it is so popular. Archie was always old fashioned as well.

The name Hugh has grown on me in last few years, sorry hope I don't offend anyone. It has always just been a long standing family sniggger. My Dad has always loved his name, going on at me and my two siblings about it and how it is such a great name for a boy. I honestly think he is on commission for ensuring the name continues for generations to come.

I think the more he has went on, the more we have dug our heels in and laughed about it. Also, DH has vetoed it out.

i do like Shuggy though, think it is quite cute. I will need to do some talking of DH round to it though.

It is now driving me nuts.

Thanks again ladies.

Definitely not Austin! Johny is my favourite from your list but you should name him Hugh after your dad - it's a great name, I'd definitely use it.

sweetkitty · 17/03/2010 20:00

I feel your pain, having a DS after 3DDs and don't live that far from Glasgow so know exactly what you are going through.

James, Ben and Johnny are nice but quite boring and safe.

Round here all the boys are Ryan, Callum, Connor, Aidan, Alex, Thomas, Joseph, Ben, Oliver, Jack, Logan, Finlay, Nathan, Liam etc

HelenDoula · 17/03/2010 19:24

My daughter has a lovely friend called Archie, like Ben & Johnny (though I prefer the spelling Jonny or Jon)

SnailWhaleTail · 17/03/2010 19:19

My ds2 is called Hugh! He is a big strapping lad and it was a last minute name when he was born as the name we had sort of chosen before just did not suit him at all.

We usually call him Shug or Shuggy which works well for his age(3.1yrs) and always get lots of positive comments on his name.

Out of your list I like Johnny.

mopsyflopsy · 17/03/2010 19:13

I like Hugh. I know a cute 3 year old, called Hughie.
