Ds2 is on the way, and we're trying to find a name with both a full version and nn that we like (Ds1 is Oscar - Os). Any strong feelings on the following?

Laurence - Laurie
Edward - Ned
Wilfred - Wilf

I think we're veering towards Laurie atm, as love the shortened versions of the other two, but not convinced about the full names...

Opinions gratefully received

Great minds, mintyfresh! I think we're more or less decided on Laurie - we'll stand firm in the face of the naysayers, and hopefully they'll grow to love it.

pasiphae - fun but not silly is exactly what I'm aiming for. We went through a long phase toying with Herb(ie), but again just don't think I could saddle him with Herbert.

Thanks for all the help everyone

My ds is Laurie so obviously gets the thumbs up with me!!

Funnily enough, we also considered Ned which I still really like. Kit is nice too

Sidney/Sid
Franklin/Frankie/Frank
Benjamin/Benji

of your list I think I prefer Edward/Ned.

I love lots of these nicknames - Kit, Ike Jonty, Jem, Herb, Bo are all fab... I think we're struggling more with the full names. I know lots of people register their children with a shortening nowadays, but I feel quite strongly that I'd like him to have a 'serious' name to use if he ends up being an accountant instead of a potter. Also our surname is Hamilton, so I think names that are too long sound a bit fussy. Would prefer to go for something short and simple.

I'm encouraged at the positive feedback to Laurie - it's mainly had good reactions in RL, but one or two s from family members.

I agree tillyscoutsmum about Ned/Ted but not so much Eddie. Guess it's important to find a name for which you like all possible shortenings, in case he changes his mind later. Fergus is very cool

lottie - ROFL at your niece!

so suits him, is cute.

Raahh · 17/03/2010 14:22

for DC3 we have absolutely decided on Isaac for a boy- with Ike as a nickname. It makes me smile.

Jonty for Jonathon

liliputlady · 17/03/2010 13:08

Laurie is cool and goes well with Oscar. I like Edward too

Pasiphae · 17/03/2010 12:40

Wilf or Laurie are brilliant. Quite fun but not "silly".

Bertram- Bertie
Ezekiel -Zeke
Arthur- Artie
Tobias -Toby
Rudyard - Rudy
Arnold- Arno
Nicolas -Nico
Herbert /Herb,Herbie or Bertie.

I do admit to love certain nicknames more than the full name it is related to.

BessieBoots · 17/03/2010 12:22

Kit is excellent

MinnieMalone · 16/03/2010 18:05

Albert - Alby / Al / Bertie / Bert
Robert - Bertie/Bert/Robbie/Bobby
Jed (Jared)
Seb (Sebastian)
Cal (Callum)
Cass (Cassius)
Kolya (Nikolai - very Russian!)
Hal (Harold)
Iggy (Ignatias)
Richie (Richard)

lottiejenkins · 16/03/2010 18:05

Wilf(red) is a cool name but im biased cos of my wonderful Wilf!! (Pics on profile!!) My niece was eighteen months old when Wilf was born, she had great fun with our names. My late dh's name was Frank.
Granny "Meg who's on the picture?"
Meg "Chart,(her attempt at Charlotte) Wif (Wilf) and W.nk!!!!
Cue one red faced Granny!!

Tillyscoutsmum · 16/03/2010 18:00

We had Laurence on our list for boys - love Laurie but was a teeny bit concerned he may become a Lozza at some point

Love Jem as a nn for Jeremy (but Jezza is vile obviously)

Like Edward nn Ted/Ned but not keen on Eddie

In the end, we tried to think of names where we liked all possible nicknames because even though you may choose one particular nickname, other people may chose something else.

We ended up with Fergus (nn Ferg or Gus)

HelenDoula · 16/03/2010 17:52

Ted & Ned are fab ! also love Kip or Kit (for Christopher)

Takver · 16/03/2010 17:46

Laurence - Laurie - Good, def. Little Women
Edward - Ned - Good, but prefer Ted (Teddy for a baby)
Wilfred - Wilf - good, no special associations

I like names with lots of shortenings too. Christopher has good nnames - Christy, Kit, Kester all good . . .

The Jems that I've known have been short for Jerome or Jeremy, either of which might be easier than Jeremiah?

Woofie · 16/03/2010 17:06

Yep,milly - Laurie says Little Women to me too, plus Laurie Lee, which are both good associations I think.

5Dollar - dh and I have discussed Ned's chav association extensively, and I don't think it bothers me since we don't live in Scotland, but when I've mentioned it to Scottish friends they've been a bit

boodleboot - LOVE Jem, but not sure I could live with Jeremiah...

Nathaniel seems to be a popular choice. Shame it's my brother's name, or I'd definitely consider it. Nat is great.

Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies

Isn't 'ned' the Scottish equivalent of 'chav'?

boodleboot · 16/03/2010 16:16

i reckon you should go for Jeremiah nn Jem

great names BTW

Fel1x · 16/03/2010 16:13

I thought of Nathanial - Nat/Nate after I posted too - great minds indeed

You can also have Woody as a nn from Edward, which I think is fab

milly987 · 16/03/2010 16:10

Sorry Fel1x - x-post! (Great minds eh!)

milly987 · 16/03/2010 16:09

Oliver - Ol, Ollie, Olly
William - Will, Willie, Wills
Alexander - Al, Alex, Sandy, Xander
Nathaniel - Nate, Nathan
Robert - Rob, Robbie, Bob, Bobby, Bert

My bro is called Maximillian - Max for short. Maxwell is also a good alternative if the longer is a bit too much!

From your OP, I like Laurie the best. Little Women flashbacks swoons

Fel1x · 16/03/2010 16:09

Like Laurie
Also Teddy for Edward as well as Ned
sandy for Alexander
Ollie for Oliver
