How about Louisa shortened to Lola.

HelenDoula · 13/03/2010 23:48

I love Lola, I wanted my 2nd DD to be Lola (would have been Lola Rae) DH didn't like it so we chose Sienna Rae... which she suits, she would have suited Lola too (DH is now exDH so if I ever got to have another girl she would be Lola !)

I think it will sound a bit silly as a name for a grown up, but makes a cute nickname

glitzalicious · 13/03/2010 01:27

I've heard Lola used as a nickname for Lolita so that in itself would put me off - and there are so many Lilys, Lilas, Lolas and even Lulas around at the moment it could get confusing!

notsoteenagemum · 12/03/2010 21:36

I think it's lovely as long as you say Lohla not Lerla like Sara Cox does sometimes.

remaincalm · 12/03/2010 21:22

I know a Lola, she is so cute. If you like the name go for it, I think it is great.

boodleboot · 12/03/2010 20:36

dolores i would call dolly but know one we hate! typical!

carlotta i did like until someone pointed out its a place that sells cars on MN on a thread before...

i still like Lola loads tho...

can't even have Eloise as we have an Elise already...

People will say it's common, chavvy, too sexy etc. Personally I think it is lovely.

BettyButterknife · 12/03/2010 20:14

According to my baby name book, Lola is a shortening for either Dolores or Carlotta. Either of them float your boat?

dizzydixies · 12/03/2010 19:44

I know of 3 now - I'd be inclined to have something longer and known as Lola

bouncingblueberries · 12/03/2010 19:37

Love it. The one I know is almost 2, very fiesty, fiercely independent, an all or nothing type of girl and we love her to bits! Such a character. Although her big sister often gets nicknamed charlie

sparklyrainbow · 12/03/2010 19:28

I have this little sister Lola.... she is small and very funny

I think it works on younger children but struggle to imagine a teenage Lola or an adult.
What about Laura, similar sound but more adult, and you could probably call her Lola when she is small?

Ellokitty · 12/03/2010 17:41

Sorry, whenever I heard the name, I think of some kind of women of the night too.

izzybiz · 12/03/2010 17:35

We got a puppy at new year and named her Lola, then a couplee we know had a baby girl about a week later and named her Lola!

Lovethesea · 12/03/2010 17:28

I don't like it because I always think of Lolita....

PiggyPenguin · 12/03/2010 17:19

Lots of Lola s near me too. I think it has become over-popular.

bibbitybobbityhat · 12/03/2010 17:16

Once again, have to say it otherwise it would be a lie, lots of Lolas where I live. I must live in the absolute mecca of new fangled names becoming popular. I guess its something in the air or summat.

Holly29 · 12/03/2010 17:11

My DH wants Lola and I have said over my dead body but that's just us. For me it is fine for a little girl but not for a High Court Judge (which is obviously what our DD to be is going to be ).

BravoJuliet · 12/03/2010 14:34

What about Eloise Jane or Paloma Jane nn lola

Lola is a bit insubstantial and kindy of stripperish. I'll be muredered for that. But it is a bit sexualised for a proper given name

PatsyStone · 12/03/2010 14:33

I have a Lola, so obviously I love it. To me it is feisty and cute. I do not look at her and think of porn stars thankyou very much.

I think of "whatever Lola wants, Lola gets!" Well, she can try

I'm afraid I don't like it.

To me it's either:
Barry Manilow's showgirl
OR
the transvestite from the Kinks song 'Lola'

Neither of which I think are particularly lovely references. Sorry.

boodleboot · 12/03/2010 14:23

i agree (altho do already have a mae i must confess...)
