Bored of the name books, freshen me up!

I am expecting a DC2 in September. Not sure of the sex yet, but the fact is I only really like one girl name (there are a handful I QUITE like) and then a smattering of boy names which I think are ok...but the point is, I have pored over the names books and nothing really grabs me. My DD is called Octavia. Any thoughts for names of both sexes which might be a pleasant surprise to me? I would consider anything but I like more unusual flower names, names with a classical dimension, names popular in Edwardian and Victorian times...

Have you had the baby yet LadyT? What did you call her/him?

mathanxiety · 11/03/2010 19:14

Callista
Daphne
Ariadne
Cosima

I love Ferdinand and Barnabas.

GuntherMcKilocodie · 11/03/2010 17:26

Allegra? I love this name. Wanted it for DD2. Also love Augusta and Adelaide. Clementine nice too (I like Clemmie as a shortening)
No idea about boy names. Never had to choose one.

MamaLazarou · 11/03/2010 17:22

Some wonderful names on this thread.

How about naming a boy after one of the great Victorian inventors: Edison, Wilson, Brunel, Boyd... possibly not Crapper, though.

ChynaDoll2006 · 11/03/2010 16:47

Cecile?

BarbaMamma · 11/03/2010 13:17

Emilia?

LadyThompson · 11/03/2010 13:15

The name I really love is Dahlia, so got it in one, Pasiphae! How clever you all are. DP is not convinced, however. And obviously it will be no good if I turn out to be having a boy

I quite like Ferdinand and Barnabas/bus.

Octavia and..

Leonora, Celia, Geilies (sp)?, Gaia, Irene.

Arthur, Ambrose, Barnabus

Pasiphae · 11/03/2010 12:48

Doh! Forgot the boys:

Soren, Baltazar, Caspar, Gideon, Rafferty, Elzear, Emil, Arthur, Harold, Zephyr, Mathias, Fergus, Anatole, Demetri, Gregory, Anselm, Edgar, Ferdinand?

Pasiphae · 11/03/2010 12:45

How about
Dahlia, Aphra, Hebe, Prunella, Philomene/Philomena, Domitilla, Hortensia, Salome, Eglantine, Ginevra, Mirabel, Ariadne, Alcyone, Athena/Athena, Elspeth, Celimene, Lucilla, Eurydice, Adelaide, Athenaide, Azalea?

I think they will all go lovely with Octavia.

Ondine · 11/03/2010 12:21

I also like;

Domenica
Evangeline
Georgiana

Mrsvwolf - wondering if that's the same person I know - she has a Saskia and did call her 4th child Octavia - she also has two boys in the middle.
So what girl's name do you have your heart set on LadyT?

LadyThompson · 11/03/2010 11:03

Well, everyone is definitely on the right lines because DP has already vetoed Isadora and Arabella, but is pushing for Clementine, which I do actually quite like, but just not as much as the name I have got my heart set on if we have a girl.

Loving Florian and Lysander for boys (think I might have a hard job convincing DP though). He likes Oswald but it doesn't go with Octavia and we both like Julius but it's all a bit too Roman with Octavia. I LOVE Horatio and I know one but I am not sure DP is keen (however I will be lobbying)

Augusta is on my girl list as is Theodora (but DP has vetoed Theodora).

Some of the other names are good but unusable (such as Miranda - the name of a little girl we know who died) and Cassius (the name of a friend's son)

These are really helpful, thank you very much.

Octavia and Humphrey

Be brave and use it as a first name if you love it. We were worried about Ds' name as SIL and BIL had laughed when we told them our boys and girls name choices and almost changed it to something else. But when it came to it, we loved it more than we worried about what anyone else thought.
Persephone is such a unique and beautifully pretty name. I read something recently that said children with very original names were (contrary to belief) more likely to be successful later in life as people were able to remember their name and so instantly put a face to that name.

LadyCressida · 10/03/2010 23:03

luciemule - thanks! I guess Octavia is Shakespearean too so it might well go! Also you could consider Ophelia, Cordelia, Olivia, Viola, Amelia, Helena...

BTW I love Persephone too. I'm planning on using it as a middle name if the bump turns out to be a girl - not quite brave enough to go with it for a first name though...

luciemule · 10/03/2010 23:01

Batholomew is absolutely lovely - reminds of Tom's Midnight Garden.

Octavia and Harriet (Hattie)
Octavia and Milo (two LOs I know IRL)

Lady Cressida I love the name Cressida. I played the part of Cressida in an operetta and have loved it ever since. I think your name would go well with Octavia.
