Completely stuck. Pregmamt with DC4 and for the life of me cannot come up with a pretty girl's name we all like!!

Now DH is suggesting Lyra, and I go back and forth- sometimes I think I really like it, then I think it's either pretentious or too close to Lycra- disaster...

Thoughts,anyone?
Does anyone actually know a Lyra- apart from the one in the golden compass, obv. Does she get called Spandex a lot?

i really like it. I think the character is feisty and tough, and that's good to aspire to, but it also sounds feminine, without being twee like lots of girls names nowadays.

GladioliBuckets · 06/03/2010 18:27

I have a Lyra so I love it obv. I wanted something with girlpower and I loved the Pullman books, can't get much more girlpower than 2nd coming of Eve.
Never heard a Lycra comment or even thought of it in 7yrs!

fabhead · 06/03/2010 17:34

I really like it as a girl's name becasue of the character really, I'd definitely consider it.

Lovethesea · 06/03/2010 12:19

Didn't think of lycra but do think it sounds very similar to 'liar'. Also thought of Pullman novels so I do recognise it as a name but liar still pops into my head .......

What evil queen Lyra?

I love it. Am rofling a bit at some of the alternative suggestions. Laragh looks and sounds like someone hawking up a bogey.

bellissima · 06/03/2010 08:31

Fraid I also thought of Lycra. And agree that it does have a certain 'dark' side to it - the evil queen Lyra and all that. Like Lydia and Lara.

CarmenSanDiego · 06/03/2010 07:35

I think Lyra from the Pullman books is a great character to name a little girl after. Really nice name and I never made the Lycra connection.

ScottishBoris · 06/03/2010 02:13

Lyra is lovely - as is Larissa.

solo · 06/03/2010 02:10

I read the title as Lycra

zazen · 06/03/2010 01:50

I love it - agree Lyra is a pretty cool in HDM.
I like the name Lark as well.

Myra reminds me of the Moors murderer - I'd give that one a miss.

GoddessInTheKitchen · 06/03/2010 00:43

agree with libby its a great name

Love Lyra

Sunshinemummy · 05/03/2010 22:13

I like it and I like Phillip Pullman but I do think Myra.

crankytwanky · 05/03/2010 22:08

Ooh I like it. I've considered it but DH says "non".

I have not read P.P btw.

MumNeedsCoffee · 05/03/2010 22:02

DH was reading the books with DS2 a while back- they're both big Philip Pullman fans now.

And yes, I think people will immediately think of the books or the film...

Just as long as they don't think Lycra!!

paisleyleaf · 05/03/2010 21:45

I think Philip Pullman
But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

MumNeedsCoffee · 05/03/2010 21:41

Thank you so much for all the lovely suggestions - I love Lara, Leila and Layla. Also like Emmeline but can't as too close to my sister's name - Emily.

When I mentioned Lydia to DH he immediately started singing Groucho Marx Lydia the tattooed Lady.. but that's a whole other problem and may require counseling

@RHL DS1 James,DS2 Toby, DS3 Dylan- no girl's names so far but you never know...

Or Laura?

I like Lyra but it will only ever remind me of the Northern Lights character.

pippylongstockings · 05/03/2010 21:15

I know a Lyla and I think it is a fab name.

What about Lara ? Meena ?

Cicatrice · 05/03/2010 21:14

Lydia, maybe?

Slambang · 05/03/2010 21:10

I like it but as it's only really known from the book she'll have a lifetime of 'Ooh, was your mum reading it when she was pg then?'

Not a problem unless you're not a fan!

RHL · 05/03/2010 20:59

So many pretty girls names to choose from...
Emmeline
Clementine
Anouska
Beatrice
