What do you think of Cleo?

...middle name would be Helena. Nixed the MN as a first due to pronunciation issues - DH loves He-lay-na but hates Hell-en-a.

The other name that was in the running was Evelyn, but again pronunciation issues arose (like Ev-e-lyn, but Eve-lyn doesn't flow with our last name). Also think the nn Evie is too ubiquitous now.

Baby is due any day so any input greatly appreciated!

I may be a geek, but all I could think was of Cleopatra and then Helen of Troy. The two names together, to me, sounds too much like a History Channel documentary.

I like both names though.

RachieB · 12/03/2010 12:39

love the name Cleo

stanausauruswrecks · 11/03/2010 11:09

Lots of "what a lovely name!"
A few "Chloe? Ooh, I know another Chloe"
so far no-one has tried to feed her Whiskas (though she's had a few goes herself) or tried to drive off in her

glitzalicious · 10/03/2010 17:18

stanausauruswrecks, or anyone who's called their DDs Cleo, can I ask what reaction you usually get to the name? So hard to gauge online from such mixed responses!

It's a car/cat to me too. Helena is lovely (not sure where your dh get a He-lay-na pronunciation from though). I like Evelyn too, with an Ev-lyn pronunciation, and no nn).

BustleInYourHedgerow · 08/03/2010 00:29

Cliona is usually the Irish spelling. Cleo is really nice.

GladioliBuckets · 06/03/2010 18:33

I like Cleo. Also Carmen and Carmela. And there's also Clea from the Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell.

SingForJoy · 06/03/2010 01:41

My pram is called Cleo (I didn't name it Maclaren did lol). I'm not fussed tbh, brings to mind ello ello for me, although obviously wouldn't be a problem for younguns.

providentielle · 06/03/2010 01:14

I read a book years ago with a character named Cleona which was shortened to Cleo. It was set in Ireland so not sure if it's an Irish name?

glitzalicious · 06/03/2010 01:07

LibbyLobster that's very funny - and you make a good point. If I thought 'tank engine' every time I met a Thomas there'd be little time to think of anything else!

RHL · 05/03/2010 21:09

Definitely a Renault!

littlemissm · 05/03/2010 18:42

I love this name but hubby wouldnt have it

Fourleaf · 05/03/2010 09:14

Love it - was thinking of it for DS had he been DD. Defo not a dog's name in my mind - but when I mentioned it people tended to think of the car... not really a big problem though in my opinion.

Sadly I can't have Cleo now as DS is Leo...!

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 05/03/2010 05:43

I like it. I associate it with cats, a bit, probably because of the Cleopatra connection, but I do like it.

And Helena works beautifully as a middle. I tried it out, and as a first name I say Hell-e-na, but when I say Cleo Helena, it turns into your DH's preferred pronunciation. So I think it's an excellent choice.

MrsCadwallader · 05/03/2010 05:25

Ummm, it's a dog's name.... sorry

frogetyfrog · 04/03/2010 14:52

oops cross post. I did think car before seeing your post now.

frogetyfrog · 04/03/2010 14:51

I would immediately think of a car. Or a cat.

RubiMama · 04/03/2010 14:49

I really liked this name for DC1 but I was worried everyone would think 'car'. Judging from posts so far though, maybe that's not the case...

donttrythisathome · 04/03/2010 12:27

I love it - but DH also said it reminded him of the Clio car, so he no likee. So what though - go for it!

MrsNetz · 04/03/2010 12:21

lovely

SweetnessAndShite · 04/03/2010 12:19

I love it too and would have pitched for it to DH if I'd've had a girl. I was slightly concerned by the Pelvic Floor Excercise Machine with the same name though.

stanausauruswrecks · 04/03/2010 12:11

I love it- but then DD is a Cleo!

CaptianPicardsPineapple · 04/03/2010 11:55

I like it, pretty.
