Can Betty be a nickname for anything other than Elizabeth?

Or perhaps Bettina, which I really like

I think Betty is a really cute name, but not keen on Elizabeth.

Just bumping this thread as I saw the name of a historian on Radio 4 was Bettany. I know it is more common as a surname, but I prefer it to Bethany.

What do you think? I'm really liking Betty and may even have convinced DH but he is insisting on a proper name. As someone who was very nearly christened by my cute girly nn but now use the 'grown up' version I can understand that.

My aunt is Lynette, but is called Betty.

Thanks for asking knottylocks, bump is expanding as we speak, but that may just be the Monster Munch! Got 12 week scan next week so fingers crossed all is ok.

Thanks for all the replies, just speculating for now, I expect I will have more of these threads

MonkeyMargot · 01/03/2010 16:15

Elspeth?

thehillsarealive · 01/03/2010 11:05

does nobody think of Frank Spencer when they hear the name Betty????

I had an Aunt Betty - she was also lovely, didnt drink a lot, didn't smoke but was Scottish. Her name was Elisabeth.

KnottyLocks · 01/03/2010 11:02

Hello Bumper, how's the bump?

I had an Auntie Betty - she was Bettina. She was a wonderful woman so I have a very fond attachment to 'Betty' as a name. Tis lovely.

kando · 01/03/2010 10:51

[disclaimer: my betty does not smoke tabs but does drink a lot - of milk and apple juice that is!]

Obviously, I love the name Betty. My dd is actually Elizabeth but is more often than not called Betty. (FWIW, I wasn't too keen on Elizabeth either but the other 2 dds and dh won! It's grown on me, but I much prefer the spelling "Elisabeth".)

scottishmummy - you must have met my betty then, she's doing well for a 4 year old

victoriascrumptious · 01/03/2010 10:46

I think Betty is lovely on it's own.

smileypigface · 01/03/2010 10:37

I used to know a Bettina - who used Betsy as a nickname - I quite like that

I know a Betty whose full name is Betul (Turkish in origin I believe and I think you're suppposed to have an accent over the 'u'). She is very attractive, not a hint of a moustache but she does drink/smoke a lot.

I know a small Bethany who is known as Betty.

I like it but then I like her so maybe there's a connection.
