Please help me decide on baby name

I really am finding it difficult deciding on baby names. We don't know if we are having a boy or girl.

If we have a boy, Edward will be middle name after a family member. Let me know what you think of my shortlist

Joshua Edward,
Sanford Edward,
Joshua Sanford Edward,
Harrison Edward,
Cole Edward
Hugo Edward

Here are the girls names

Felicity Olivia,
Olivia Felicity,
Livia,

Help help help, I feel like I'm going around in circles. Thanks

I'm a (primary) teacher and have yet to encounter any Harrisons with pierced ears, never mind before the age of five. In fact, the Harrisons I know are delightful boys. Joshua is the name that always seems to belong to the more tricky boys in any and every class I've ever taught; I'm sure it's more to do with the fact that there are so many Joshuas around than all Joshuas equal hard work!

Maria2007loveshersleep · 28/02/2010 22:06

(BTW personally I wouldn't worry about the popularity issue, regarding Olivia. Its a lovely name regardless).

LaDiDaDi · 28/02/2010 22:06

Felicity is lovely.

My problem with most of your boys names is that they tend to run into Edward as a lot of them end in a vowel (made this mistake with dd's name). If this bothers you then you need a consonant ending to your first name, Harrison is therefore your best choice imo as Sanford is yuck! We have Edward as a middle name for ds and did struggle to find a first name that we liked that also went with it.

Maria2007loveshersleep · 28/02/2010 22:05

No please, not Spencer & not Sanford. And yes of course people are going to comment on the Mark & Spencer thing. You will too!! Imagine, hypothetical dialogue:

your friend asks: 'where are Mark & Spencer?'
and you answer: 'Mark & Spencer have gone shopping to Mark & Spencers'.

I really like Felicity & Olivia by the way. Pretty names.

kalo12 · 28/02/2010 22:01

sanford is good.

you need more girls names, olivia is way too popular . what about viola

houseworkhater · 28/02/2010 21:57

Another vote for avoiding Spencer here.

ChippingIn · 28/02/2010 21:00

Gahhhhhhhhh NO you cannot call the baby Spencer if you husband is Mark.... you just can't.

Heated · 28/02/2010 20:21

Do not have Spencer if dh is Mark!

HanR12 · 28/02/2010 19:50

Thanks for all your comments, has given me a lot to think about.
Another boy's name I like is Spencer. What are your thoughts???
My DH is Mark, do you think people would say Mark and Spencer as in M&S or am I just being silly?

Harrison or Cole if it's blue
Felicity Oliva if pink....

houseworkhater · 27/02/2010 22:38

Op-I don't imagine Hugo to be fat-quite the opposite!

houseworkhater · 27/02/2010 22:35

I like both Felicity and Olivia but think Felicity Olivia seems too much of a mouthful.

Like Hugo and Edward for a boy.
Also like Sanford but it does sound as if he must attend private school, have blond hair and then go on to study at Harvard university where he will meet Helen, his future wife.

mellifluouscauliflower · 27/02/2010 20:23

You might try saying these combinations aloud. I think some of them are a bitdifficult to say.

2 vowel sounds together are more difficult to say than a consonant and a vowel together.

That's why "Joshua Edward" is harder to say than "Edward Joshua".

weepootle · 27/02/2010 20:08

Hugo is nice, prefer Hugh. No to the other boys names.

Olivia is lovely despite being so popular. No to the other girls.

madly · 27/02/2010 20:03

My only piece of advise is please visit a nursery or infant school beforehand. If (like me) you have not been near either for years (or decades) then it will be quite an eye opener. Lots and lots of names the same. Good Luck

cece · 27/02/2010 18:57

Joshua and Hugo I like for a boy

Felicity I like best for a girl

Heated · 27/02/2010 18:51

Yes to Joshua and Hugo.

mathanxiety · 27/02/2010 18:48

Cole is pretty American, but I think of it in relation to the Irish name Colman. Sanford sounds to me like a bathroom fixtures manufacturer, tbh.

I like Liv as nn for Livia or Olivia.

2old4thislark · 27/02/2010 18:29

Sanford is also the charter airport In Orlando.

Too American - unless you are American - as is Cole.

Hugo only works if your child will go to private school and have long floppy hair. If you call him Harrison you will have to have his ear pierced by the times he's 5.......
Which leaves Joshua - great name - whatever he does and at all ages, I think.

I'm not sure about the girls names as they don't shorten well.

mathanxiety · 27/02/2010 18:24

I like Hugo, Cole and Livia from your list.

ShirleyAmbrose · 27/02/2010 18:20

Sanford and Cole are Sunset Beach names. The others are nice.

Livia and Joshua Edward the nicest.

diddl · 27/02/2010 17:54

Like Joshua & Hugo-(also like Arlo, MIlo & Jethro)

Like Felicity best as first name I think.

SE13Mummy · 27/02/2010 17:37

I'd go for Hugo or Harrison from your list of boys' names and Felicity Olivia from the girls' list. I know of a Felicity who goes by Fizzy/Fizz and have also heard of Lissie as a nn.

janeite · 27/02/2010 17:26

Love all your girls' names but the only one of your boys' names I like is Edward. sanford is horrible imho, sorry.

bargainhuntingbetty · 27/02/2010 17:21

How about Libby instead of Livia???

Not keen on any of your boys names but it is your baby so it is your decision.
