We have narrowed it to 3 names....we already have a 2 year old called Gene which we think is fantastic and unique.

I don't like Sonny, think it is because it reminds me of Cher's ex.

I like both the other 2 and think Rudy goes best with Gene.

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2010 22:00

it is a girls name in sweden, but it's also a biblical boys name

gomez · 27/02/2010 21:59

So Seeker, DS is called Sonny. Should I have put John on the birth certificate but just called him Sonny? Does that make it any better?

By a strange quirk of fate he was either Rudy or Sonny - but poetically the sun was shining into the room as he was born and overcome by hormones Sonny won out!

Fecking fab name and even I admit far better than the Cosmo I was lobbying hard for .

Also I had an Uncle called Sonny (really Isaac), DH had a Great-Uncle called Sonny (really Nelson) and I had a huge crush on, yip you have guessed it, a Sonny (real name, Sonny)about 25 years ago. A well-established name, well certainly in this neck of the woods.

evamummy · 27/02/2010 21:43

I have a lovely (female) friend called Asa. She is originally from Sweden. I think it is quite a common girls' name in Scandinavia.

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2010 21:40

yes, you're right, as pointed out further down in the thread.
but the fact is that Sonny is the name they were known by. and gradually that has worked it's way into general usage as a name in its own right. Just as many other nicknames and diminutives have.

hellymelly · 27/02/2010 21:39

Asa is a girl's name isn't it? or at least it is in Sweden.

Maria2007loveshersleep · 27/02/2010 21:36

Love rudy & dp votes for it too .

I like Asa too (hadn't heard it before though) but elegant name.

Sonny I don't like. I agree with the others; doesn't sound like a proper name to me.

seeker · 27/02/2010 21:31

Sonny as in Sonny asn Cher's real name was Salvatore.

Sonny Liston was Charles, I think.

Poncherello · 27/02/2010 21:27

Asa is fab ... would like to use it too if DH would agree. I think in Scandinavia it has an accent on it åsa - pronounced Orsa ... great name. I also worked with a guy called Asa and it really suits him.

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2010 21:26

in fact, here you go

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2010 21:24

Sonny and Cher?
Sonny Liston?

chegirlshadabloodynuff · 27/02/2010 21:24

Sonny and Cher
Sonny ?Liston

chegirlshadabloodynuff · 27/02/2010 21:24

Spooky.

I am planning to use both Rudy and Asa for DC5.

I like Sonny too but I already have another two names to add so cant really squeeze it in

seeker · 27/02/2010 21:22

When did it become a name? Seriously - not being arsey, I promise! Are there any famous Sonnys?

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2010 21:18

but seeker i don't think everyone views it like that any more.

I can't even remember ever hearing anyone to refer to a young boy as sonny, tbh. or if i have it's not been often.
perhaps for older generations, or in certain parts of the country, but not everywhere.

i just think of it as a name. fanny on the other hand is pretty ubiquitous slang for vagina, everyone, everywhere knows it. so it isn't really the same.
You can't help but think Sonny is condescendin, but i can assure you that a vast amount of people just think of it as a name

seeker · 27/02/2010 20:11

Sorry - went out. What I meant by mentioning Fanny is that I don't think it's a good idea to say that you can use any name you like regardless of associations because someone will always find something negative to say about it. No one would, presumably, think of calling their child Fanny or Roger any more, so associations do matter. And I can't think of any positive associations with Sonny. Patronizing name for a little boy - macho police slang for a criminal. I GENUINELY can't think of a single positive one.

mumoftoomany · 27/02/2010 12:06

Sonny is great and goes well with Gene!

Asa is girls name in Scandinavia. Ending in -a, it sounds feminine imo.

Rudolph/Rudy is not nice imo. It is too close to 'rude' and reminds me of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer.

So, I'd vote for Sonny!

notsoteenagemum · 27/02/2010 12:02

If you're offering seeker but I usually prefer Cock

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2010 11:09

wtf has Fanny got to do with it?

"oh, i don't like Sonny, so i'll somehow try and compare it to a name which has become common usage for female genitalia, that'll show them that i'm right"

yeah.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 27/02/2010 11:05

i know three sonnys, it's becoming v popular.

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2010 11:03

I love all your names actually.

we have an Asa, so obviously like that! Love Sonny too, i know a little sonny and he's gorgeous.

lowrib · 27/02/2010 11:02

You know what, I think I might have been in a bit of a bad mood last night! I'm having a change of heart on Sonny.

It does sound like "lad" or "son" to me, but so what?! It is a nice sounding name, goes well with Gene, and if you love it then ignore the nay-sayers and go for it!

My DS has an unusual name which probably isn't to everyone's taste, but we love it. If I had listed to the MN jury he'd probably be called Charles or Edward instead

And anyway people are much more polite once you've actually chosen the name.

lowrib · 27/02/2010 10:57

"MWAHAHAHA! Fooled you all I'm Tony now!"

What a fantastic image!
