Rednina is a nice spanish name.

pipoca · 14/03/2010 15:53

most popular Spanish girls and boys names 2007

Can't for the life of me find the Venezuelan one.

Y'know I've always quite liked Alma because of the meaning but not sure it doesn't sound a bit like Hilda or gertrude in English, plus the whole "mi alma/mi arma" affectionate greeting in Andalucia. Alba is quite nice too I think, although not sure really.I see some forreign ones have sneaked in...Briana??

petisa · 13/03/2010 22:26

I agree withh pipoca, a lot of those traditional names are still very popular here in southern Spain. I like Jimena/Ximena but it would sound totally crap in English!

cloudbaby · 13/03/2010 20:49

Esperanza (meaning Hope)
Juanita
Conchita
Maria
Ana

My daughter's friend had a Belen as an exchange student. Of course, all the teenagers added a "d" to the end of her name.

pipoca · 06/03/2010 16:30

Amparo is the OLDEST OLD LADY name there is.

VigourMortis · 06/03/2010 15:59

Sonsoles and Amparo, if they haven't been mentioned yet...

pipoca · 06/03/2010 15:55

No, I don't like them either. I think soooo mnay people give the girl the mum's name that there aren't very many names at all and they're quite old fashioned....same names repeating over and over.
Someone linked on a thread about Spanish girls names aaages ago to a baby nmae site for the most popular girls names in Venezuela. They were quite different to the typical Spanish names but there were some really pretty ones.

My faves if we ever have a girl are:
Sofia
Elena
Isabel
Alicia

bottombunk · 06/03/2010 15:24

Yes, quite correct pipoca Spain is a big country and it should have ocurred to me to point out that the names could be more/less popular depending on the region, I am in Madrid.

However, I still think the names I mentioned are old-fashioned. Just because a name is popular doesnt mean its not old-fashioned and viceversa

pipoca · 05/03/2010 21:45

Oooh I disagree about the old lady names mentioned. Spain is a biiiiiiig country and some of those names bottombunk that you call old lady names are quite popular in Andalucia, Esperanza for example or Angeles or Soledad.

I would say that a few of the names you say are "very popular" in Spain at the moment are not at all popular where I live in the south. I've only ever come across one Leire and she was Basque and never heard of a Veronica down here.

Now...Amparo, THAT'S an old lady name.

RHL · 05/03/2010 21:01

Inez is very classy

rosieposey · 05/03/2010 20:29

My 17 year old DD1 is called Sofia - its a beautiful name and has suited her all of her 17 years, i think it translates well from infant to adult.

This may not bother you in the slightest but a lot of the names mentioned are very old-fashioned and you don´t come across many little girls in Spain called
Juana/ita
Consuelo
Mercedes
Soledad
Esperanza
Remedios
Angeles
Esmeralda (I have never met anyone in Spain in RL with that name)

Plenty of old ladies though (sorry!)

Lucia, Sofia, Inés, Alicia, Ainhoa, Alba, Veronica, Claudia, Paula, Laura, Nerea, Nuria, Leire are very very popular amongst little girls in Spain at the moment.

I like:
Ana, Noelia, Luisa, Andrea

I think most have already been mentioned - good luck!

asampras · 05/03/2010 18:30

we nearly called our daughter Noeme, the Spanish version of Naomi

sfxmum · 01/03/2010 09:41

Carmen
Pilar
Inez

all traditional mind

LouLouH · 01/03/2010 09:38
