Rachel

I really like the name Rachel for a girl but when I tell people that's my chosen name they look a bit disappointed and my brother actually said I could do better than that.

I do like the popular names of the moment - Isabelle, Ruby, Amelie etc. But I wanted a classic name that wasn't trendy or too old fashioned and I think Rachel is a name that fits this.

I also want a name that wouldn't "limit" my daughter in the sense that whichever profesion she chooses her name will be acceptable in that field.

I love the name and had always intended to call my first daughter that. However, it then became incredibly popular in Ireland - where I'm from - so that killed it for me. It is a beautiful name, though.

I like it -- like Rachael as well.

loueytbg · 16/03/2010 14:07

I'm also biased but I love it

It isn't common and it doesn't date. But please please PLEASE do not spell it Rachael. Like the OP I get really irritated when my name gets spelt wrong...

wahwah · 16/03/2010 08:37

Rachel is a lovely name. If it wasn't already a family name I would have considered it.

Egg · 16/03/2010 07:26

Hmmm, about last year... . I did read some of the latest thread when it was new with the intention of joining in again but I got so carried away reading what everyone had been up to and then going back to the older thread to see what everyone was referring to etc I got waylaid!

Once twins start school (2.5yrs!!!!!!) maybe I will have more blooming time...

HarrogateMum · 15/03/2010 21:03

Egg - when was the last time you were on multiples madam!!???

janeiteisFedUp · 15/03/2010 20:45

I am a Rachel too (outing myself here). I agree that Rach is vile beyond belief (reminds me of tractors etc for some reason) but Rachel is fine: I prefer it to Rachael and I hate Rachelle etc.

Tbh I prefer Ruth, Naomi and Rebecca.

Egg · 15/03/2010 20:35

Hehe HM, now at least I can finally work out which of my FB friends you are (not that we ever converse mind you!).

HarrogateMum · 15/03/2010 20:07

ah fab name, my favourite infact, possibly as its mine. Given that my Mum wanted to call me Dulcie and my Dad wanted to call me Carina after some Bob Dylan song, I was rather happy that they compromised.

Egg · 15/03/2010 19:57

We liked Rachel and Rebecca when thinking of a name for DD. Chose Rebecca as prefer the potential nicknames that come with it and were not keen on Rach as a nickname (like Raye though as jellybeans said).

bulby · 15/03/2010 19:28

I'm a Rachel and although I yearned for something much wackier when I was younger I am so grateful now to have a name that does not box me into any age or social group. There are so few names that this is the case for.

zozzle · 02/03/2010 22:50

Lovely, classic and not too popular nowadays.

KAEKAE · 02/03/2010 20:10

Its okay, but a little bit boring. My brother's GF is called Rachel and she's 17 and when I first met her a few years ago I did find it unusual that she was a "young" Rachel, it does suit her she's so very cute. Most others I know of are in their 40s.

birdofthenorth · 02/03/2010 18:21

Like it. Might get more popular due to Rachel from Glee?

5DollarShake · 02/03/2010 17:46

Rachel is a lovely name.

I don't think it was made popular by Friends; they just gave the character a name from that generation.

I know several Rachel/Rachael's my age, and yet still like it. Most names of my gen I just think are very meh and too familiar.

jellybeans · 02/03/2010 16:20

Sorry, friend is Rachel not just Rach!

jellybeans · 02/03/2010 16:20

It's OK, abit dull perhaps or 80s. DD has a friend called Rach, Raye for short.

CinderellaRach · 02/03/2010 16:08

My name is Rachel and I'm glad it's not in the top 100 names! It's doesn't rhyme with anything and no one can really take the mickey out of it!Although I think it's nice spelt this way. When people write to me spelling my name 'Rachael' it grates on me-can't stand it!

HappySeven · 02/03/2010 12:48

It's top of our list if this baby turns out to be a girl and I know what you mean about the look you get when you say it. My only worry now is that if it becomes as popular as suggested on your thread there may be hundreds in a couple of years and I was trying to avoid having a very popular name after being one of many HappySevens at school.

ArcticFox · 02/03/2010 12:11

There is no better name..........but possibly I am a bit biased for reasons I will not confirm

henry37 · 02/03/2010 10:32

i was going to be a rachel until my dad decided on a much more trendy 70s name always wish they had stuck to rachel its a classic.

skihorse · 02/03/2010 10:29

It's a beautiful Hebrew name and on our list.

DeeDon · 02/03/2010 09:45

Lovely, timeless name - my DD1 is Rachel Elisabeth & it really suits her.

WinkyWinkola · 01/03/2010 21:52

It's a beautiful name. I prefer the simpler Rachel to Rachael.
