Help needed (again!). Francesca is now a serious contender for DC2 due next week! Not sure what I think about any of the shortened versions though. What are peoples opinions on Fran, Frankie, Fifi or Chessie?? Or other suggestions welcome! THANKYOU AGAIN

I know one whose NN is Nessa, really suits her

brightyoungthing · 01/03/2010 12:41

My DD is called Francesca and everyone calls her Fran even though I hate it! I want her to be a Frankie but I am guilty of calling her Cesc or Cesca (ch)just because it rolls off the tongue. She hates her name and wants me to call her selena but everyone we meet loves her name and tells her how pretty it is. If you hate the name Fran be prepared to hear it a lot and you'll get fed up of telling people to stop calling her that! Her midddle name is Maria after her grandmother and I think the Two go well together, her surname ends with an A too so it all sounds rather exotic!

twosofar · 26/02/2010 08:32

Bit random, but the Italian nickname for anyone called Francesca is Chicca (pronounced Kika)

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 26/02/2010 00:09

When we were in Mexico the hotel staff called our dd Franchy (fran-she) which sounded really sweet.

allydennis · 25/02/2010 23:35

Just seen on another thread Effie as another nickname for Francesca????

It's a really nice name with lots of options so you can pick whatever suits! My cousin has always been a Franki but I like Chesca too.

Fi/Fifi sounds more like a nickname for Fiona to me.

Sunshinemummy · 25/02/2010 11:33

I know a girl my age called Francesca and she is called Frank. I really love it.

bogie · 25/02/2010 11:20

My friend is called Francesca and we all call her chesca or chess

frakkinaround · 25/02/2010 11:18

Fran gets my vote but I don't like it on younger children - it's fine on older people (like me!). I was Francie as a child.

Frankie she can always pick up later if she likes it.

Chess is nice or Chesca.

I don't like Fifi.

I think names you can shorten in various ways are great, because then if you ever want to reinvent yourself you can just pick a new variation on your name. I picked up Fran when I went to uni.

birdofthenorth · 25/02/2010 11:17

Love Frankie. Not keen on Fifi at all I'm afraid. No strong views on Fran.

My cousin is Francesca and we all know her by the nn Franca, just for info.

rubyslippers · 25/02/2010 11:17

I love the name Francesca

Frankie is the best NN

boodleboot · 25/02/2010 11:16

we call one in our family 'checkers' and always have done.

Albrecht · 25/02/2010 11:11

My dad used to call his sister Francy (France-ee) as a nickname. Always thought it was cute.

HeadFairy · 25/02/2010 11:00

My dd is Francesca and although she's only 8 weeks ds is calling her Frankie Panks, and dh calls her Frankie Pankie... I'm sure she'll end up being Frankie, though I'd rather she stayed Francesca. Chezzie is an option... I had a friend called Francesca at school and she was Franca. I don't like Fran at all, would much rather she was called Frankie.

shumway · 25/02/2010 10:58

There's a Francesca in the book I'm reading and she gets called Cesca.

AllieW · 25/02/2010 10:43

I knew a girl at school called Francesca who went by Cessie (pn Sessie).

Other than that, I really like Fran. Frankie sounds too bloke-ish to me.

Whatever you do, though, don't go with the traditional one: Fanny!

BooHooMonkey · 25/02/2010 00:02

cesca ('Chesca') - love it!

ilovemydogandmrobama · 25/02/2010 00:00

Know one called 'Chess'

SE13Mummy · 24/02/2010 23:52

I know a couple of Frankies aged 5/6 used to teach a Chessie and know a couple of Frans who are my age (30ish) and like all those nicknames. I don't like Fifi - sounds like a dog's name to me!

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 24/02/2010 23:39

I have a 9yo Francesca, she is the only one in her school so not overly popular and timeless I think.

Dh and I call her Frankie mostly, but she also gets Frank and other variations.
She hates Fran or Franny, and is quick to correct people on it.

laughterlines · 24/02/2010 22:34

I know an adult Francesca and she is know as Fran or C(h)esc

MrsHappy · 24/02/2010 22:33

I'm not too keen on Francesca, but out of the possible nicknames I like Franca the best.

sparklyrainbow · 24/02/2010 22:28

Have taught three (teenage)- Frankie, Chessi and Cesca/Ces (still pronouncing as ch for both).

Different in a good way I think and lots of options

PandaG · 24/02/2010 22:23

like Frankie or Fran

Francesca in the family in known as Chessca - at least, that is the pronunciation, just the last 2 syllables of her full name. That suits her

Jamieandhismagictorch · 24/02/2010 22:21

I really like Francesca, because it's a serious, classy name. Then for a child, Frankie is lovely.

I say, YES
