Here's some combinations I'm pondering on; any opinions would be great. I'm into multiple middle names, as you can see...

Boy Combos:

Atticus Farrow Artan Remus
Atticus Larkin Aubrey More
Atticus Farrow Artan Boone
Atticus Aubrey Larkin Boone/More.

Girl Combos:
Evelyn Rose Pommeline ("Pommaleen") Noelle
Evelyn Violet Pommeline Noelle.

Thoughts?

"I'd suggest you rethink all the boys names unless you enjoy the thought of your child being beaten up daily. Of course you may decide to go for an uber expensive private school in which case it won't matter."

Do you really think children will beat up a child because his name is Atticus and not Adam or Arthur or Alexander ... honestly do you think a child finds it that strange and tease worthy?

And do you think a child going to private school has a different view on names than one going to a state school, really?

StrictlyKatty · 21/02/2010 21:38

I think you should drop the More. I love TM but it just looks really silly. The surname is always spelt Moore now and never used as a firstname.

Also, as the last middle name it would be beyong funny if your last name is a noun.

'Atticus More Onion' for example

Just silly silly silly

loobylu3 · 21/02/2010 21:24

Well, obviously it's your choice but the child may not be as popular as your friend Euphemia.
I do wonder if your DP is as keen on these names as you are as your taste is so unusual an not v popular (on here at least)!

meadowlarks · 21/02/2010 20:23

Woah, lots to reply to...thanks for all your replies. It seems the controversy's died down a bit and the Atticus/Pomeline fans have come out of the wood-work

In regards to the lovely stereotyping going on; I went to school with a Euphemia Valentine Bluebell Smythe who was one of the most popular girls in the year and very unresentful of her uniqueness. I know it's not the same for everyone and whilst I'm against private schooling, I highly doubt I'd let my kids attend a comp where you get ridiculed if your name is more eccentric than Dave.

popsypie - I hate the name Scout and I'm not trying to have a clan of Harper Lee connotations.

loobylu3 - Thanks, but I couldn't face giving just one middle name, I can't really explain why. I love Evelyn Pomeline Rose, thanks.

Brideshead - I don't mind At or even Atski

AllieW - I'm using "Ever-lyn", I think "Eve-lyn" is the masculine pronunciation. Funny you say "distinguished", I chose Larkin because the man himself was totally unpretentious; I find Byron quite the opposite. Vaughn is horrid imo.

OP posts:
AllieW · 21/02/2010 20:19

Oh, forgot to mention that Vaughn/Vaughan might work in there, too.

AllieW · 21/02/2010 20:18

Lots of middle names can work, my Aunty was Kathleen Dorothy Joyce and my Uncle is Alec Francis John. Gives you lots of choices if you don't like your first name!

Of those you've suggested, I like Atticus and Aubrey and Evelyn Rose (which pn of Evelyn are you going for, btw, Ever-lyn or Eve-lyn?).

Similarly distinguished names, perhaps also on a poetry theme, include Byron and Dylan. In point of fact, how about Atticus Byron Aubrey?

Andi2 · 21/02/2010 20:07

each to their own i say if you like the names and want 3 + middle names go for it, I love evelyn rose, no opinion on which sequence of boys names but think 'Arty' is a nice shorter version of Atticus x

loobylu3 · 21/02/2010 19:39

I like Atticus a lot, especially because of the TKAMB connection. There is an Atticus at my DC's (state) school, who doesn't get teased at all.

I really don't like any of the other boy's names. I don't like surnames as first names generally (unless perhaps they are a family name).
If you really feel such a strong connection to Phillip Larkin, why don't you just use Atticus Larkin Surname? It sounds SO much better.

I like most of your girl's choices. I like Evelyn, Violet and Rose a lot. I'm hugely in the minority but I actually like Pomeline (with one m). I don't like Noelle personally, but more due to a personal connection.
How about just Evelyn Pomeline Rose? I think it's really pretty.
Adding a third mn just spoils the effect imo.

Other French names you might like:
Apolline
Amandine (means almond)
Capucine
Maelys
Genevieve
Clementine
Coraline
Valentine (could use for a boy too)
Romane

It's obvious that you have very individual taste in names (not a bad thing) BUT you do have to remember that you are naming someone else who may not share your individual taste and may be v embarrassed by it!!

popsypie · 21/02/2010 19:34

Love Atticus by the way as Atticus the best father in the world from 'To Kill A Mocking Bird' is my favourite character in any book I've read. Why not call you daughter Scout and stay on the same theme.

PS: Not sure about all the middle names, maybe go for something very 'normal' in the middle to give them a bit of choice. I've been to one wedding where there were giggles at the groom's middle names. Awful.

Maria2007loveshersleep · 21/02/2010 19:22

I still think Atticus Larkin Remus More sounds ridiculous. Sorry. Remus=reminds me of wolves for some reason. Don't like it at all. More I also don't like, just doesn't make sense to me as a name. Atticus is pretty but I fear he might be called Attic as a NN .

Larkin I like...

Evelyn Rose Pomeline has grown on me. I actually think that Pomeline- even though unusual- is pretty & melodic. Evelyn Rose, these 2 names on their own without Pomeline is perfect. I really also like Rose Pomeline but NOT Evelyn Pomeline (too long).

BridesheadRegardless · 21/02/2010 19:20

Atticus will invariably get called 'At' eventually by his teenage chums.

teenage boys will reduce all names to the most basic form ime, and then eventually build them up adding 'a' or 'as' 'ly' or 'ski'.

You will have no control ovet this and 'At' is not objectionable is it?

dawntigga · 21/02/2010 19:09

I'd suggest you rethink all the boys names unless you enjoy the thought of your child being beaten up daily. Of course you may decide to go for an uber expensive private school in which case it won't matter.

I think there is an advantage in giving a mixture of common and uncommon names so that Junior can choose to be called John if he wants to in later life. If your lad were to want to be a plumber or a squaddie he might find himself a bit stuck for options. Of course it would be great in many ways if he is called to the bar or becomes Prime Minister, but he might make other choices.

It is a little early to be planning choices of schools, but he would have to be well hard to live down Atticus Aubrey etc at an inner city comprehensive.

noktok · 21/02/2010 18:51

All kids get to the stage where the conversation goes:

"so what's your middle name?"

I remember so many times my best friend would not tell people hers. It was an unusual name with a strange spelling. I knew it but she was so embarassed every time this happened and it upset her. If it had been plain and simple, she could have just said it, but as it was, it was hours of torture for a teen because she didn't want to say it.

There are more ways to give a child meaning in their life than giving them a name which many people hear and think: WTF?

You can admire a person without using their name.

meadowlarks · 21/02/2010 18:47

Literally in the ironic sense.

Bella32 · 21/02/2010 18:45

Atticus Larkin Artan Irony Remus More?

aarghhelp · 21/02/2010 18:44

Literally?

meadowlarks · 21/02/2010 18:41

Irony will literally be his middle name. He'll grow up to be Chandler Bing.

OP posts:
Bella32 · 21/02/2010 18:36

I think he would have appreciated the irony.

Drop the R name and your son will be very big in car rental

aarghhelp · 21/02/2010 18:35

I wonder whether Larkin would have been amused at the thought of someone naming their child after him?

meadowlarks · 21/02/2010 18:34

aarghhelp - You're like a little Larkin sitting on my shoulder and sending me subliminal messages.

MrsBadger - Haha! Alarmo!

OP posts:
Bella32 · 21/02/2010 18:34

My points are often irrelevant. But I think they're funny, so it works for me.

Alarmo! Alarmo!

MrsBadger · 21/02/2010 18:31

oh you have to do it, Alarmo is a fab nn!

aarghhelp · 21/02/2010 18:31

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.
