... Coco Chanel [surname]

That's firstname - Coco, middlename - Chanel.

Is it just me, or is that truly dreadful?

It´s OK, although I se it as a nickname.
It seems to be used indiscriminately.

Her name was Gabrielle.

Stings daughter has it as a NN & I don´t think it´s "related" to her real name.

Isn´t it the name of Courtney Cox´s daughter?

I cant make up my mind if its pretentious or chav Probably Coco could be quite sweet depending on what surname but there really was no need for Chanel ...

I love the name Coco, but dislike Chanel. It is very unique though!
