because it's cute, but everyone has a problem with this :-s

Thoughts?

We're not religious or associate in any religious circles, I just like the name.

'genuinely your favourite name'

What a pile of nonsense!

I really hope you are fabricating the whole thing.

meoww · 03/02/2010 23:15

your uncle's mother must be mentally ill, or is that not a correct diagnoses because she's in a different geographical area?

had enough, i'm leaving

As a matter of interest, would it be Ok for OP to name her baby "Jesus", if she pronounced it "HayZuz"? (He'd hardly be the only kid in school having to explain his name, after all.)

wastingaway · 03/02/2010 23:06

Why would an Atheist want to call their child Jesus?

Name him Sue and have done with it.

People will think you are stupid or mentally ill.

And I actually have an Uncle Jesus. He's from Spain.

meoww · 03/02/2010 23:05

northener i might think youre a total 'numpty' for thinking you can read my mind about what is genuinly my favourite name

hewasmytwin, i could call thor the god of thunder an 'angry guy'

Well I'm a practicing Christian and I wouldn't be offended, I'd just think you were a total numpty.

The only reason to pick this name is to chock or surprise people. If that's your agenda then go ahead, knock yourself out. Just don't pretend that's it because you like the name more than any other. I like the word 'table' - got a real good ring to it that has. I haven't called my child 'table' though!

I was waking slowly up to the news this morning and they were talking about Madonna breaking up with her boyf Jesus. They kept pronouncing it Jee sus. Surely he is called Hey zooz?

It annoyed me so much I woke up.

I am not offended at the notion of you naming your child Jesus. But I do think it would make his life pretty complicated TBH.

Its like Adolf - as soon as anyone hears it they will only think of one person.

amen to that

mariedj · 03/02/2010 22:46

Actually I like the name. But it makes me think of the big Lebowski and giggle. Wonder why its totally normal to have this name in Spain but people in the UK are offended? Genuinely curious.

meoww · 03/02/2010 22:44

i think it's ridiculous to be offended by my son's name, but not offended if we happen to be hispanic as that's okay.. :-s
unless it says in the christian manual 'anyone who names their child jesus is a mortal enemy and they mean you harm' then i'm not ure i understand it.
Anyway i've heard that unreasonable and baffling veiw that it would 'offend' certain people, i'm considering other aspects now..

Fair enough meoww - I'm a humanist, so meaning is important to me, but I know we're all different. Don't have a problem with biblical names per se, but wouldn't have picked this one myself, probably because we still live in a world where the name Jesus will mean something very specific to the vast majority of people.

I think the point about it being used as a swear word was a powerful one too.

Are you thinking of home educating?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 03/02/2010 22:41

Could those who are offended please join me over here?

sorry for the hijack

TheBossofMe · 03/02/2010 22:41

Meoww - how does it sound with your surname (or the surname your DS will have)? Is it an English sounding surname?

meoww · 03/02/2010 22:38

oh i'm not too big on meanings, i'm really into how a name sounds on the end of your tongue, like joseph for my first, people say that's biblical but i kinda shrug..
although there was a great native american called joseph.
God could also be interpreted in a few ways, so 'god saves' could mean 'mother nature' saves, which i'm all for..

meoww - does it not bother you that some people (a lot of people) would be offended by it? I assume your DS will eventually move outside your own circle of friends, so talking about how your friends won't mind is a bit silly, TBH.

Anyway, I wouldn't be offended by it (am a practising Christian BTW), but I would laugh at you if it was combined with pretty much any non-Hispanic surname. It would just sound ridiculous.

Jacob is a lovely name, though - on my list if I ever have aboy.

IsItMeOr · 03/02/2010 22:33

meoww - as a fellow atheist (if I've understood your views correctly), I'm genuinely puzzled why you want to choose a name for your son that means "God saves"?

I guess I chose DS's name because I liked the meaning it had, as well as how it sounded.
