What do you think of Matilda, nickname Tilly? How does it compare with Lucinda, nickname Lucie?

Matilda/Tilly very common round here (Surrey) and feels very 'now'.

Lucinda/Lucy much more classic.

I know quite a few Matildas/Tillies under 5.

I only know of one Lucie under 5.

Personally I prefer Matilda but probably wouldn't use it because I know so many other children with that name

Not keen on Matilda/Tilly I'm afraid.

I like Lucy, Lucia and Lucille, but not Lucinda.

I like Matilda lots. Also like Martha which I think of as being quite a similar name for some reason.

I am also considering this name. Love the versatility - could suit a very feminine or tomboy girl. Anyone with a Matilda get 'Waltzing Matilda' tho and would you dare call her this if you were thinking of moving to Australia?

Named my daughter Matilda almost 8 years ago, when it wasn't even in the top 500 girls' names in the U.K. and most people thought it a bit of a strange choice. Lots of people responded "Matilda! Really??!" when we told them what we had named her.
One of the reasons I chose it was because it was so uncommon, so I am rather annoyed to see it becoming so popular, I must say.

Love it of course
I think it's strong but pretty and a little bit grannyish in a good way (of the Mabel, Constance, Violet, Iris ilk). We don't shorten it...drove me mad when she was born and lots of people assumed she would be Tilly, which I actually think is quite pretty but I loved Matilda and thought well we either insist on it now or she'll be Tilly forever. Mine is nearly 3 and has started calling herself Tilda. Am just annoyed it's now crept up to 60-something in the rankings. I only know one other though.

I love this name Matilda. Less keen on the nn Tilly.
Lucinda is okay but I prefer just Lucie or Lucy

Matilda is very 'now' and popular - I know 3 under 4 years.

Lucinda, on the other hand, is a beautiful, classic timeless name that won't date as much imo. Lucie is a lovely nickname.

Names don't make the child though do they? So of course I don't expect all Tillys to be twee but I do lump it in with ellie, evie, milly etc as cutesy, twee, girly names.

Mathilda means 'mighty in battle' which is great as dd is a tank of a child.

I have a Matilda nn Tilly. She's not twee at all - total tomboy. It means bellicose maiden or something along those lines and it suits her down to the ground.

It is popular though - she's 4 and only one in her class, but I know a lot of little ones.....

I think Matilda's a lovely name - we quite liked it for DD2 but we already have Harriet aka Hattie and thought the possibility of Hattie and Matty/ie was too awful.

Lucie's lovely too (my Grannie's middle name) but I dislike Lucinda for no reason other than the fact that it's the name DD1 gave her horrible hairdressing head doll!

I haven't met another one as yet and I know a LOT of children! I do live in Cornwall though so I guess it may be more popular in other areas!

I have a Matilda and now know 5 others. Two are close work colleagues who had theirs after me.
I don't regret it because I love the name and she was named after my favourite great aunt ( so if she was the number one name I probably would have incorporated that in her name somewhere)
I wouldn't chose it if you want an original name.
Mine is also a Tilda.

I have a Matilda too and I love it soooooo much! She has never been a Tilly either and calls herself Tilda! We call her all sorts of things so it is very versatile when it comes to nicknames! I suggest if you prefer Tilly to call her that though xx

I have one too, I call her Tilly, her Daddy calls her Mattie, GPs call her Matilda, nursery friends call her Tilda, my siblings call her Tils.

I love the fact it is such a versatile name but it is apparently getting increasingly popular.

Really like Lucinda too, have a good friend called Lucinda but her nn is always Luce.

I have a Matilda (20mths), and like showofhands everyone calls her Tilda, suits her down to the ground!
I know it's supposed to be getting more popular, but I have never met another Matilda, so maybe not overly popular?
