I would think of Clark Gable.

Up to you whether you think that's a good association or not.

Blanchet · 01/02/2010 11:49

I don't usually like surnames as first names, but I do quite like Clark, esp. as it was your grandma's brother. I wouldn't think of Superman. I prefer it to the others you mention in your post (although I do like Oisin... Clark Oisin? As a middle name you get rid of pronunciation difficulties?).

PrettyCandles · 01/02/2010 11:47

I knew a boy called Clark. I think it's nice - nothing wrong with Superman .

Vito is great! As long as you don't mind thinking of Vito Corleone. But he was quite a good character.

Two4One · 01/02/2010 11:45

Oisin is hideous.

My cousin called her baby Owen. But spelled it Eoghan. Why would you do that? They are a bit Paddy McPaddison. I think Irish names can be nice but if you live in the UK it just looks a bit "dreaming of the old country". And these ultra Irish names are usually used by people of Irish descent rather than those who've just stepped off the boat.

If you like Irish-sounding names, there are plenty that won't make life difficult for your child.

Clark? There are no words...

Why don't you think about names you actually like rather than what you fear/hope the name will say about your child. Let your child speak for himself rather than through his name.

MaggieTaSeFuar · 01/02/2010 11:25

What about Diarmuid? I like that one. Seems user friendly in the uk too.

I do like Oisin, but I am just tripping over them here in south dublin. It's very popular right now. Obscure in the Uk and 'oh right. another oisin here' no offence to the mums of oisins, sorry!

What about Gregor or Fergus then? Scottish but linking in with a broadly celtic theme?! not that your family is a theme park of course.

motherbeyond · 01/02/2010 10:45

theseandcoming ahem, i was being tongue in cheek re veto?! and think you'll find you can choose the spelling of your childrens names..i have two others and have altered the spelling of one of their names because didn't like the original. i may well have a reuben and call it ruben..so there!

AND my dh is Irish, and Oisin is his choice, our other boy also has a celtic name,so no,not trying to be something we're not. which would be the case if i called the poor child vito..not a drop of italian blood in our family!

Xavier is lovely, but you do need to be a certain type and, preferably, without a strong accent. I know of three Oisins and really do loathe the name....but hey, I have a boy called Artemus!!!

cece · 01/02/2010 09:50

Clark is Superman or failing that a make of shoes.

IMO not a name for a boy that I would use.

posieparker · 01/02/2010 09:49

I like Reuben and Clark.

orangehead · 01/02/2010 09:47

Since when does having a chld that has some allergies mean you are a bit precious

Veto is nice!

I like Reuben, Hugo and Oisin. Xavier and Zander are a bit precious. I can imagine a xavier and a Zander being allergic to all sorts of things.

What about... unusual classics?
