Rufus? Any thoughts

Hi Guys,

Still very undecided on boys names - we don't know the sex but we need to be prepared. The only one we agree on at present is Rufus and it goes well with our surname. Like that it is not so popular but quite cool.

What do you think?

I love Rufus. Had no idea it had 'posh' connotations until reading this thread. TBH it makes me think of the cool dangerous Lost Boy in teh film Hook
Or was taht Rufio?

mrsrvc · 02/02/2010 10:49

I love it, but my dh has vitoed

Also we were watching Notting Hill the other day and there is a scene where there is a posh bloke nicking a book and his name is Rufus... DH just looked at me and said thats why not Rufus - reminds him of dim posh blokes at school.

On the other hand it reminds me of a lovely handsome Rufus at uni.

If Michael McIntyre has a 3rd son, 2 to 1 he will call it Rufus. Make of that what you will.

dizzydixies · 01/02/2010 19:59

love it

poutine · 01/02/2010 19:55

I really like it!
Although, when i think about it, the only Rufus I know of is.... a dog.
Still a cool name, though.

PanicMode · 01/02/2010 19:53

frankie82 FWIW, we've only ever had positive comments - not even a raised eyebrow and how nice - so my advice would be brave.

As for the dog associations - I know lots of people with dogs called things like Max, Bertie and Sam and I don't know a single dog called Rufus.

MrsJohnDeere · 01/02/2010 19:48

Like it.

My initial instinct was that it was a bit doggy, but I can't actually think of any dogs called Rufus in my dog friend circles.

AnathemaDevice · 01/02/2010 19:47

I love it (another Rufus Wainwright fan here), but DH hates it so I'll never get to use it.

LynetteScavo · 01/02/2010 19:34

I like it a lot.

frankie82 · 01/02/2010 19:28

You're right, seems a split jury on this one. I guess the main thing is we like it - I must admit I have never heard of a pet called Rufus so hadn't made that association. I think it is a definite contender on our list. Hopefully if we don't tell anyone the name until he is born then they will have to be polite! Or perhaps we will have a girl...

Thanks for the comments!

Seems to be a bit of a marmite name. You either love it or hate it! LOL

messylittlemonkey · 01/02/2010 17:21

Love it - go for it! So what if it does remind some people of dogs. The more unusual/cool names always seem to have some dodgy connections somewhere along the line. Who cares?! Better than being boring.

RnB · 01/02/2010 14:43

i love it

frizzylizzie · 01/02/2010 14:42

and it sounds like 'Roofers'

Keepo · 01/02/2010 14:38

It also sounds like Ruthless. It sounds like the name of a mean kid.

CantSleepWontSleep · 01/02/2010 14:23

It is not 'quite cool'. It is a terrible name. Unless you are naming a dog, in which case it's just fine.

zozzle · 01/02/2010 13:53

Not overly keen - screams middle class to me - nothing wrong with that its just I prefer names that are used across the classes.

timelordvictorious · 01/02/2010 13:48

I love it.
Had red-headed DD been a boy it would have been on the sortlist.

jasper · 01/02/2010 13:47

love it

frizzylizzie · 01/02/2010 13:18

I dislike it, and every Rufus I know (about 5) has red hair, so I kind of now see it as a joke name for ginger people.

Very popular in London.

allydennis · 01/02/2010 10:59

Love it love it love it love it love it but my OH hates it. Also love the Louden Wainwright song about his son Rufus - "Rufus is a t*t man" !

Tillyscoutsmum · 01/02/2010 10:45

Rufus was DH's choice for DS. I wasn't sure at first but did learn to like it (not enough to use it though). I do know a cat and a dog with the name, so I think that put me off a bit
