Digby?

It may be the hormones/ insomnia talking but I think I may like the name Digby .

DH and I both like the whole old name thing and have been pretty settled on Wilbur for a while now but I am suddenly having a wobble!

What do you think?

marmadukes a caterpiller... i can't remember the name of the book but i loved it when i was younger...

Digby is/was the name of my local mental health hospital (while I was growing up) so has negative connotations for me.

Yup, knew about the film, and about Charlotte's Web (love that book!).

Funnily enough our girl's name was also used in a film recently - Penelope- a girl with a pig nose! Still not put off using that one either!

I know an adult Digby who is known as Digger.

Still can't decide and DH has now decided he also loves Monty which I quite like too!

How rude of MIL! When I asked my mum what people thought of it, when she was telling people she had a new grandson she said 'well it's not the sort of name people immediately go 'ooh, lovely' about is it?' My dad was also very unsure until someone he told loved it and he kind of agreed!

I do have a friend who I still take the mick out of about it. I told her I liked the name when I was pg with dd and she practially snorted her tea out of her nose! She regularly took the p!$s until I told her it was going to be DS name and now when she says Digby I say 'do you mean: Digby '

My take on a similar theme to Digby (it's a village in Lincolnshire btw) were names like Warwick, Chester, Devon, Lincoln! I dispensed with the baby name books and looked through the road atlas

ThePinkOne that has really tickled me - we don't use any of those apart from Diggers and Digs. I use Digsy-boo/poo and Digsby though. How exciting to come across another Digby!

Re: the playground comment - MIL was asking a few months ago what names we had in mind for DC2 - given her somewhat lukewarm reaction to Digby, DH for a laugh said we were thinking of Esmerelda - she went off it: "don't you dare do that, I already worry enough about when Digby starts school!"

Intergalactic - sounds like we have similar taste, think we have considered most of these over the last few weeks.

I think Wilbur and Digby were some of the more mainstream names we liked, we did consider some much more unusual ones!

Still have 8 weeks to decide. . . .

To add, you can't really shorten it - some people call him Diggers (I assume this will stop as he gets older, he's only 17mo at the moment) but apart from that no nicknames, which I like. Although I sometimes call him Diggle Piggle or Digglesby Pigglesby (lol, I bet I sound like a right twat now!).

I prefer it to Wilbur. For other ideas, our list for DC2 inclues Rufus, Benedict, Bryce, Milo, Jude - similar sort of feel as Digby??

Nice to know there are Digbys out there!

I don't really understand the issue with people saying it is a dogs name! My dog is called Oscar and I know children with the same name but it never occurred to me to tell their parents it is a dog name imo!

I still like both, might have to see which one suits him. Perhaps we can have it inscribed on his collar?

My DS is called Digby too. I wasn't sure if I should read this thread but actually, I think his name is brilliant and I don't mind if some people don't like it. I've had a lot of positive comments.

I'd never heard of the biggest dog thing (I'm 26, perhaps that's why?). The only Digby I'd heard of was Digby Jones.

My DS is Digby. Quite a few people have actually commented quite rudely but we love it so don't give a crap (good job or this thread would've upset me )

WorkingitOut I am at the thought of you potentially having a Digby and a Jemima.

I used to know someone whose Mum and Dad were called Chloe and Rex. Chloe wasn't the popular little girl's name then as it is now, and I used to think they sounded like a dog and a cat.

I wanted Digby but my DH vetoed it because of the dog thing. And I wanted Jemima but he vetoed it for the duck thing.

But I still think Digby is a great, solid, superb name. Go for it!
