Am I boring to be thinking of calling my baby James?

My baby will be here very soon and DH and I still haven't agreed on a name. I have spent hours poring over these threads about baby names and have come to the conclusion that I might like to call my boy James...

Is this what MNters call a "meh" name? I'm forever reading on here "What about Turquand?" and "How do you feel about Virgil?" and I wonder if I should be making a bit more of an effort. But I think James is a lovely name. Always have. Makes me think of my dear Grandpa.

Is it very important to his well-being that my child has a name outside of the top 100?

Is James ten-a-penny?

Please help...

I don't get the need to try and be so original with names, perhaps because I have the 'pleasure' of having an unusual name myself. James is a lovely, solid name , and he won't grow up and ask you 'Why?!' in a pleading manner.

TrillianAstra · 26/01/2010 15:44

I like what Pootle said:
I think a good solid name does no harm. No one will ever pre-judge a James, nor ask how to spell it etc. It suits a baby and an old man.

audley · 26/01/2010 15:40

I know a brand new baby James with one brother Oliver. I think it is a lovely, smart name, and not many around here it seems.

MrsJohnDeere · 26/01/2010 15:05

My nephew is one of 3 James' in his class (5/6 year olds), but I don't know any at all round here. He is always known as Jimbo.

walkthedinosaur · 26/01/2010 14:48

DS2(5) is a James, he hardly ever gets called James, at school he's Jamie, at home he's JimJam, Jimmer, Jim or Jimmy or you little sod!

It's a lovely name although completely different to what we were going to call him before he was born. He just looked like a Jamie when he popped out.

tjtheminx · 26/01/2010 14:40

Thanks butadream. Sorry for hijacking!
OP- I think it's a great name. Go for it!

butadream · 26/01/2010 13:54

Lovely lovely name. Go for it. tjtheminx can't see a problem if all the boys in your family are called James anyway! He will just be "tj's james" rather than "cousin's james", it's not too confusing.

tjtheminx · 26/01/2010 13:53

I was going to post the same question. I love the name. And would love to call my DS James (tis early days only 15 weeks but I know the sex thanks to a CVS)

My only problem is there are so many James' in my family. My dad, my brother and two of my first cousin's sons are James.

It's not my fault I'm younger than my cousins and having babies later... am a bit cheezed they stole the right for me to call my DS after my dad.

Would it be ok? or really boring?

alibobins · 26/01/2010 13:52

I've got a 5 year old James only one in his class Lovely name x x

tootiredtothink · 26/01/2010 13:48

I know soooooo many boys called James.

Nice enough name though.

littledawley · 26/01/2010 13:45

Both of my girls would have been James had they been boys! I love Jimmy as a nickname. FWIW - my name was in the top ten throughout the 70's & 80's but I've never been in a class with another or met more than a handful. Choose the name you love - my DS is Edward and I still think that it's the best name ever despite being fairly popular.

weblette · 26/01/2010 13:41

I have a James and he's the only one in his infant school atm.

For us it's a family name but also as the others have suggested, timeless.

MaggieTaSeFuar · 26/01/2010 13:40

it is very popular, but i like it. i wouldn't have chosen something quite so popular myself, but i don't know that many jameses.

nickelbabe · 26/01/2010 13:38

James is a lovely name.
it's the only name that's ever been on my list for a boy (i'm screwed if i have 2!)

plus, as you said, it has special meaning to you.

mumoftoomany · 26/01/2010 13:37

As others have said, if the name James has a special meaning to your, then that's a great reason to choose it (assuming you like it too and it goes with your surname ).

It wouldn't be my choice, personally, though.

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 26/01/2010 13:33

Bames is a made up name, surely. I love James btw

PootleTheFlump · 26/01/2010 13:29

I think a good solid name does no harm. No one will ever pre-judge a James, nor ask how to spell it etc. It suits a baby and an old man. Ultimately, it is a name you like and that has family connections, and that's what matters. My brother & I were both given names that then sat at no 1 & 2 for many years and it did us no harm at all. Wierdly, as you get older it seems to matter less & less as you mix with people of wider ages (if that makes any sense)!!

GrimmaTheNome · 26/01/2010 13:25

Excellent choice. Its one of those names that doesn't try to define a child - he can be a posh James or a Jimmy or absolutely anything in between.

nowwearefour · 26/01/2010 13:23

personally i like the fact that my dd's names are universally liked and heard of and in the top 100. James would have been the name for my dd1 had she been a boy!

Ziggurat · 26/01/2010 13:22

I am very much in the minority in that I don't get James (don't dislike it, but don't understand all the fuss over it either) - but if you like it, go for it!

SE13Mummy · 26/01/2010 13:21

James is a brilliant name. There are 3 in my daughter's Reception class of 30 and we know another couple of 5-year-olds named James but who go by Jamie but I can't think of any babies I know named James recently.

I doubt any future psychiatric problems will be able to be attributed to your son having been given a name from the top 100... it would be ever so tricky to demonstrate a causal relationship between the two

becklespeckle · 26/01/2010 13:20

James is a great name which is made even better as it makes you think of your Grandpa!

It doesn't really matter what others think of it, if you love it, use it.

DS1 and DD's names were both in the top 10 list last year and I think DS2's was in the top 20 - I love their names though and couldn't care less! DS1 has my most favourite boys name ever!

Hullygully · 26/01/2010 13:12

Bames is better.

boodleboot · 26/01/2010 12:52

I have a James and think it is the best boys name ever....we call him Bob for short (JimBob became just Bob....)

you will never be embarrassed to call out the name James whereas some of the more choice MN choices i cringe just reading....

tummytickler · 26/01/2010 12:18

James is lovely! I know loads on their 20's, 30's and 40's but only one under 12, he is 5.
I love the nn Jimi/Jimmy/Jim.
Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix are very cool too!
