Don't give up!

A while ago I posted for views on a babyname Marilla Elizabeth...and was given generally negative opinions....I was so disappointed as after 36 weeks of trying to figure a name for baby #3 that DH and I BOTH liked, I was gutted that it was so poorly received by the good ladies of MN!

Anyway after another couple of weeks of searching through babyname sites and books we decided that there was no name we loved more and decided to call our daughter Marilla Elizabeth.

I was very nervous about letting people know her name at first but I have had nothing but very positive responses (even from my mum who has no problem in letting her opinions known usually!!)

Anyway even if people are just being nice I have decided that giving the baby the name we both loved was much better that trying to settle for a compromise...and I just wanted to pass on my experience to anyone else who is alone is loving a name for their expectant child - sometimes you are right and the rest of the world (MN world at least!) may not be!!!!

What skidoodle said. You know whether you like a name or not, this is more to get an idea of the perception of it, popularity of use etc.

chegirlsgotheartburn · 06/02/2010 22:04

hmm didnt think of that Ello. Good point about the connotations thing.

Trouble is they turn into too much of a pile in to be much help a lot of the time.

ellokitty · 06/02/2010 21:55

Whilst I am not interested in other people's opinions on my DDs names per se, (we all have our own opinions and it would be a boring world if we all agreed), I did post before having both my DDs because I wanted to know two things..

  1. Are there any connotations with the name, I had missed. For example, It would be awful to name your little treasure Adolf or Myra for example, completely unaware of their infamous namesakes. I did just want to check that when a lot of people think of the name, they don't have a negative connotation. For example, there's one girls name that whenever I hear it, always makes me think 'tart'. I wouldn't want people to think that when they heard my DDs name. Now if it was a one off, someone who knew X that was a cow for example, that wouldn't bother me... but if the majority of people thought this, it would make me think twice.

2)The second thing I was interested in was to make sure the name and the nicknames all went etc. As it turns out, our original name choice was rejected because the shortened version of the name (that we were intending to use) really didn't go with our surname. I hadn't noticed it at all, but once it had been pointed out to me, I could see that it really didn't go and so we changed the name of DD2.

So yeah, opinions are too subjective to be of much value, but that's not to say the board is valueless.

chegirlsgotheartburn · 06/02/2010 21:48

Yes my Jaidon is beautiful too.

I just dont comment on MNs. I cant really as I get so annoyed when people are rude - it would be somewhat hypocritical

Do people really change their minds according to the MN's jury?

scottishmummy · 06/02/2010 21:36

my friend son is jayden,he is beautiful boy. in real life id never slate a name,.but on mn if asked yes of course id be truthful

Harimad · 06/02/2010 21:36

I love the name Marilla - but then I'm biased as I named my daughter Marilla!

For those AOGG fans, I didn't name my daughter after Marilla Cuthbert, but after Marilla 'Rilla' Blythe, Anne and Gilbert's daughter...

And I didn't post about it on here as I didn't want it to become too popular (looks like there's no chance of that tho!)

chegirlsgotheartburn · 06/02/2010 21:31

The best way to solve that dilemma is to call your son Jayden/Jaidon/Jaden.

NO ONE on mumsnet would steal that name apparently

scottishmummy · 06/02/2010 21:18

do laugh at the stolen baby name threads when others rock up and agree vociferiously. "yeah what a bitch how dare she call her son jack.make her change names"

oh grow the fuck up

chegirlsgotheartburn · 06/02/2010 21:14

Agree with SM.

Have never understood why people ask anyone what they should call their baby, let alone a bunch of strangers on an internet forum.

And how can you steal a name? I suppose it would make it akward if your sister who lived next door and you saw everyday called their son the same as you wanted to call your son who was born the same week......

But someone on your facebook friends list calling their DD Amy when you wanted to call your DD Amy - what the hell is the problem?

My niece (I wont call her dear because she isnt) did call her dog the same name as my DS but she did that on purpose because (coincedentally) she is a bitch.

scottishmummy · 06/02/2010 20:45

anyone who asks internet strangers opinion of baby name needs bumps felt

have some self belief in your own abilities, dithering and asking strangers is risible

as is the notion, that one has dibs on a name are daft.

all the silly my sister/best pal/neighbour stole my baby name. oh get a grip if a name is known in public domain anyone can chose it.esp when threads say i was going to call my daughter sophie/freya/grace
my son jack,sam,oliver
and the bitch stole it

Jenbot · 06/02/2010 20:25

I think my DD's name was once described here as sounding like a farm animal's name!

mathanxiety · 05/02/2010 17:39

Can I suggest Mariel too?

SkaterGrrrrl · 05/02/2010 16:06

I love Mariella.

champagnesupernova · 05/02/2010 06:38

Congratulations Pepa
LOVE Marilla (didn't see original thread) or I'd have been there shouting the MN jury down
ENjoy your new baby

thumbwitch · 05/02/2010 05:55

COngrats on the birth of Marilla Elizabeth! I like the name (don't think I commented on your previous thread but I might have)

I think there is a value in asking MN what they think of a name, as in negative associations, is it overly-used - but in the end, it probably wouldn't affect my choice unless I'd missed some genital-related "humour" that would affect my poor DC throughout their life.

mathanxiety · 05/02/2010 05:47

What I hate about the babynames topic is the references I see quite frequently to hormones as some sort of excuse for having an opinion about a name, as if we lose our mental capacity once we become pg. Why do we need to apologise for having an opinion about a name for our DCs this way? Why do we associate being pg with lack of brain power, or woolly confusion, or being overwhelmed by our bodies' natural functioning and thus unable to 'think straight'? We are reinforcing a negative stereotype every time we type this silliness.

BTW, very nice name, and congratulations.

darkemerald · 04/02/2010 23:59

I should have looked it up first. I've had nothing but joke responses to the name Marilla.
Well done to you.

boodleboot · 24/01/2010 14:44

Marilla is a breath of fresh air....very good choice....I also like Mariella....i may add Marilla to my list....congrats on your baby daughter....

Good for you pepa and congratulations I've just made myself furious reading a thread about my ds's name - apparently it used to be posh but now is unthinkable because it's popular and 'spans the classes'??? And there was I just thinking it was a lovely name - hadn't tracked the social naming trends of the last few years. Am now pg with another ds and certainly will not be asking for opinions on mn! Don't understand why it's necessary to be rude about other people's dcs' names. Rant over.

DiamondHead · 21/01/2010 21:52

I agree with you op, although for some reason I can't help but read the baby name threads.

I have a formula for how well a name will be received on mumsnet -

Is name in top 100 - add lots of points
Is it in top 20 - minus a few points
Is it a name outside top 100 but gaining in popularity - add points.
Is it a name not typically used by the middle classes - minus lots of points

And there you have the result of the mumsnet jury.

Bumperlicious · 21/01/2010 21:27

Oh, it's good fun, and interesting to get honest opinions, especially if you are wavering. TBH I think some people need to be told 'oi no!', really, hormonal woman should not be allowed to choose their baby names! I say this as someone who had a few choice ideas when pg!

However my DD's name was describe on here as sounding like a sanitary product

NotAPollyanna · 21/01/2010 21:12

This section of MN baffles me. I look on it to get ideas on names but cannot understand why people ask for opinions. When my dh and I have chosen names for our dcs we kept it secret until the birth announcement so that noone could change our mind by responding negatively. Very few people respond badly once the baby has arrived and they hear the name. I find they either like the name or tell a white lie to be polite so everyone is happy. Except my mil who said "Well I suppose it will grow on us" but I expected nothing less from her.

Names are so subjective, it is a bit like asking what is your favourite colour. As it happens while browsing on here two of my dcs names have been discussed quite negatively which wasn't so great to read but as I said it is all subjective so heigh ho.

bibbitybobbityhat · 21/01/2010 21:05

Oh, I don't know.

I always approach the baby names threads as a bit of fun.

Something fairly lightweight in amongst all the angst and stress and madness.

If I thought for a moment that someone would decide against a name for their baby because of what Mumsnet had said ... then I'd think they were taking it all too seriously tbh.

Anyways, quite a lot of the time the people on baby namers are asking for suggestions, not opinions.

FimBOW · 21/01/2010 21:00

I often wonder if anyone uses any of the names that pop on threads. Especially the ones where practically every suggestion is turned down.

Congrats Pepa!
