Gregory, Louis, Arthur or Edward?

HarriedWithChildren · 13/01/2010 10:02

None of which DH likes but since he has offered a grand total of zero useful suggestions so far...

I'm particularly interested to hear what you have to say about Gregory as have not found it mentioned here.

Thanks

I like Edward
I prefer Gregor to Gregory
I don't like Arthur or Louis - sorry!

traceybath · 07/02/2010 20:00

I have an arthur and a henry - both fab names.

Not on your list but I'm also liking Wilfred at the moment but absolutely no more dc's here.

HarriedWithChildren · 07/02/2010 19:54

2 weeks to go or so. I'm increasingly partial to the Edward/Teddy option because it is more likely to get past DH and does go well with DS1 & 2.

I'll post our final choice.

Edward is the stand-out name for me. I know it's quite popular at the mo but it's a classic and the nn options are fab.

Gregory....not sure why this doesn't appeal. Maybe it's something to do with the bakers? It's my least favourite off your list.

Louis..ok, really don't like it pronounced Lewis.

Arthur...this is my second favourite after Edward. Art as a nn is cool (but not as cool as Teddy!).

Meeely3 · 30/01/2010 20:57

Arthur and Edward - those are my twins names

I also have a Charlie

fruitstick · 30/01/2010 20:56

I have an Arthur and it is a fine name. He already looks very noble

He was nearly called Eric or Ernest (although I hated Ernie so vetoed my own choice)

frizzylizzie · 30/01/2010 20:53

I am 36 and many of my friends (my age) are fans. I think it will influence some.

To the OP, I love all four names.

Arthur, Louis, Edward, Gregory would probably be my order of preference, but all very lovely.

Two4One · 30/01/2010 20:50

Do people really think Edward will rise in popularity because of Twilight? Isn't it a teen film? Teen Mums aside(!), will many adults actually see it and connect with it?

HarriedWithChildren · 15/01/2010 09:47

MMS, I am moderately concerned about popularity but I've found that despite all the supposed Jacks, Olivers and Toms etc... we only actually have one or two of each among all our nursery/friends and therefore not biggest deal.

All 4 names go rather well with our surname.

ps, give us a name that sounds a bit like your sur name?

MaggieMnaSneachta · 14/01/2010 21:32

Are you concerned with popularity at all? somebody posted a spreadsheet a while back of all the names for 2008 (rankings). can look and bump if you're interested.

avaj · 14/01/2010 20:21

I really like Louis - think it sounds both traditional and modern, if you know what I mean!
Also like Gregory, but prefer Gregor. I had two really nice Gregors at school with me.
Not so keen on Edward or Arthur, they both sound a bit pompus and a bit old man to me.

HarriedWithChildren · 14/01/2010 20:10

Hmmm, no closer to picking one than I was before but will use your fantastic comments to influence when the time comes. I can't even proceed by elimination as still like'em all.

This tiresome habit of nicknaming/abbreviating can turn a name you love into one you can't bear.

I like Edward but then I'm biased

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/01/2010 13:46

I don't know what the numbers were like before that, so it might be that he raised it, and it's now settling down again! Still, I'm glad - I don't want to pick a name that might suddenly soar up the charts!

MaggieMnaSneachta · 14/01/2010 13:39

oh well bang goes that theory. hugh laurie is putting people off the name then!

only glossy baby faced hollyoaks/neighbors characters have the power to raise a name's ranking!

cece · 14/01/2010 13:15

sorry but if we had used Edward I wanted to shorten it to Ed or maybe Eddie.

cece · 14/01/2010 13:14

We went for Tom in the end! Edward didn't suit him...

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/01/2010 13:12

MMS - there were actually 79 Gregorys in 2006, 66 in 2007 and 59 in 2008 .

butadream · 14/01/2010 12:53

I like Eric!

MaggieMnaSneachta · 14/01/2010 12:39

I love, love, love Gregory House. I have just downloaded the 6th series! I'm wondering if there might be a slight knock on effect from house, giving the name Gregory a slight temporary revival. I don't think it's going to rise up the charts but 5 years ago there might have been zero gregorys born in one year and now there might be about 15.

Clary, Cecil for a boy is just cruel. Eric I could warm to!

Clary · 13/01/2010 23:01

I know a small Gregory, it's a bit whacky but certainly memorable.

He is a lovely child FWIW. It's a bit of a name to carry IMO. Edward is lovely but more popular here (I know 4 under 10), Louis I am not a big fan of, agree spelling may be tricky, Arthur I luuurve and also only know 2 of primary age or under so not that try-hard trendy, at least in my neck of the middle-class woods.

Oooh read later post, I really liked Cedric but DH totally vetoed it. I also like Eric (no-one else ever does). Also Cecil.

HTH. Suspect not.

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/01/2010 22:50

Can't believe that no-one has mentioned Gregory House!

It's a great name, and one of the few that dh and I agree on for our shortlist.

Much less keen on your other suggestions.
Please don't add Rufus to your list. It's a name that should be reserved for dogs only.

JaneiteIsAWimpyTeacher · 13/01/2010 20:21

I love Gregory and Edward.

loobylu3 · 13/01/2010 20:19

Rufus is fab! he could be a bit of a ruffian but a very lovable one
