What does anyone think of the name Delilah? Probably shortened to Lila. I decided I loved it after hearing the song 'hey there Delilah' when I was pregnant with DD - but by then I was already set on the name Polly for her.

Now I'm pregnant with no.2 and Delilah is the only girls name I am stuck on - only other one is Isabel, but that's just way too popular.

I love DD's name - Polly - as it's not particularly common, I've never met another Polly, but it's not contrived or weird either, and everyone knows how to spell it. Trying to find one just as nice but not too common is really hard!

Do you think she would get teased cos of the Tom Jones song, or will that all be forgotten by the next generation?!

I love it!
I quite like the idea of reclaiming all those disapproved-of Biblical women. Salome would be another good one.

Samson and Delilah?

Biblical whore? She betrayed Samson to the Philistines and all for money. She was a bit fick too.

She's been sung about, written about, portrayed on screen, referenced in popular culture etc.

I wouldn't use it and my brother says probably about 3/4 of people mention the bible story when they hear her name.

I wouldn't call my child Cain or Judas etc for the same reasons.

But dn is not her and her name suits her because it is her name. And she's Lila mostly.

I don't even know what the biblical reference is! (and me having been a catholic schoolgirl too...) I had better look it up!

I like it.

She probably will get a fair bit of "my my my, why why why"ing, but no more so than Michelles have to put up with, or - currently - Rubys.

Will hardly scar her for life.

Anyway, I know a Karma, which you'd have thought unusual enough to be safe, and she gets Karma Chameleon and Karma Police sung at her constantly. Very few of us get away without a song with our name in it.

My dn is Delilah, shortened to Lila.

My brother meets a lot of faces. It's the biblical reference and I can sort of see why. I don't love it but I wouldn't worry about Tom Jones. Many names are associated with popular songs and after about 20 years, you perfect an only slightly irritated smile and nod tactic as the 38475773th person chirps a Beach Boys song at you, desperately proud of their originality.
