Beatrix and Ivo are my fave form your list

I would have used Beatrix with last dd but ds's name is too similar.

JeMeSouviens · 08/01/2010 19:07

You wouldn't use Pippa in Scandi, I remember my Swedish friend telling me it was either used for sex, bum or boob, something like that ( my cat was called Pippa, that was how we got on the subject)

pacinofan · 08/01/2010 19:01

LOVE Frank, this would have been my choice for a son (had a dd and dh would have vetoed anyway!). Also love Nancy.

bidibidi · 08/01/2010 18:58

Strange list. Unusual mix of extremely popular and the slightly bizarre. Sort of no inbetween choices...

I only really like Frederick. Some of the others really make me cringe (you wanted honest, right?)

Matilda, I have one, well a Mathilda. Brill name.

And I absolutely adore Ivo. It's such a great name. From your lists, I also like Beatrix.

JaneiteIsAWimpyTeacher · 08/01/2010 17:39

Hesper = awful but I love Hester.
Emily is good so is Matilda. I also like Adam, Benjamin and Thomas. I like Joshua too.

Matilda (if not HesTer) and Adam are my favourites.

LadyCressida · 08/01/2010 17:32

I love Pippa (Though personally i'd go with Philippa and then shorten it so if they turned out to be a tomboy they can choose something less girly)

Hesper is a lovely name too - I have not heard it before (though I like Hester). Although, looking it up it is a similar meaning to Vesper, (same root I guess) which is what we called our cat (like the bond girl!)

Adam is very nice, so is thomas though it is very popular.

legallyblond · 08/01/2010 11:01

Thanks team!

Its tricky, because some of the names I just like, and some are family names or DH's choices (DH's fave is Nancy... hmmm)...

For instance, Beatrix, Ivo and Frank are family grandparents' names. And Yannick (common in France, particularly Brittany) and Elin (common in Norway) are partly because I like them (Elin) or DH likes them (Yannick) but mostly because I am quarter French and DH is quarter Norwegian.

My faves at the moment are Hesper (it definately is a name as I know 2!) and Pippa, or Adam and Frederick.

Pippa - pretty
Hesper - reminds me of Uncle Hester from the Addams family
Elin - nice if you're Welsh
Emily - pretty but commonly used
Heidi - cute if you're blond and 5 years old
Beatrix - prefer Beatrice, but nice, fairly unusual
Nancy - not keen, very Oliver Twist
Kitty - nice, becoming more popular
Matilda - don't like this one

Frank - no, it has to be Frankie if he's to have any street cred at all
Henry - nice enough but not that unusual
Adam - really like this, but was vetoed by my DH
Benjamin - very nice
Yannick - odd if you're English
Ivo - quite like the car magazine Pro Evo
Joshua - really like this
Frederick - really like this
Thomas - nice as Tom

Jamieandhismagictorch · 07/01/2010 18:41

I like Nancy and Kitty (but would name her Katherine, as Kitty may not suit an adult).

Like Adam, Henry, Benjamin and Joshua.

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/01/2010 17:40

Like Pippa and Heidi lots.

Less keen on your boys list. Would prob go for Adam out of them, but still doesn't excite me.

doubleexpresso · 07/01/2010 17:09

Pippa, Nancy or Frederick. All very cool, nice, normal names.
Yannick, Ivo and Hesper ?
What about Ivor ? Or Ike ? Or Hesther ? Elspeth ?

JiminyCricket · 07/01/2010 16:31

Cyrli · 07/01/2010 16:13

Elin is a name - why do you say otherwise MrsBadge? Just because you haven't heard it before doesn't make it not a name!

mummydarlingsausage · 07/01/2010 15:29

from the girls list i like pippa, hesper (nice meaning) and kitty
boys list Yannick, Ivo and Frederick

MrsBadger · 07/01/2010 14:47

Hesper and Elin are not names - discard
Would use Philippa over Pippa
and Beatrice over Beatrix
Emily overused IME
ditto Matilda (esp if known as Tilly)
Rest are passable

Yannick and Ivo too outlandish for me
Joshua overused
Adam excellent
Rest passable

bellissima · 07/01/2010 14:47

I like Pippa but I think most people assume it's short for Philippa (which in fact I don't like). Like Emily.
See Kitty as nn for Katherine (and prefer Kate). Not sure about the others.

Like Frank, Henry and Joshua (though I have a nephew Joshua and his mum hates it when he gets called Josh, which he inevitably does)
