I'd be interested to hear your predictions for popular baby names of 2010.

Nearly every baby girl I meet at the moment seems to be called Maya or Mya.

Girls: Old lady chic- Iris, Ivy, Elsie, Florence, Kitty, Violet, Sylvie

Boys: Theo, Felix plus less well used names such as Noah and Eli, Zachary (Zac)

Gabriel isn't that unusual- I think it's in the top 100 now. It's a v nice name though

dizzycringles · 02/01/2010 19:34

I agree with lockets - we know of 3 Gabriels - lovely lovely name though

I'm hoping Alfie soon dissapears, 4 people i know now have an Alfie!

It seems Eva, Ava, Evie will remain hugley popular.

Our son is now 10 months and it seems his name is a real eyebrow raiser (Gabriel) - but i love it all the more for that fact alone.

Hoping to TTC this year and looking for something unpopular again

muminthemiddle · 31/12/2009 00:01

Depends upon which names celebrities start to use. Also an unpopular name today when used by someone will start to sound more "acceptable" and others will subconsciuosly think hey I like that unusual name and choose it themselves and then hey presto it will become popular.
As a wild guess I will go for:
Felix
Bono
Avril
April
Chianti (heard that this week)
Troy
and Jack!

Ponymum · 30/12/2009 21:39

Whew! I'm glad someone got it!

AIBU to be a teensy bit annoyed that the timeless, classic names we chose for DD have now both been mentioned on this thread as the next big thing? I mean, surely the whole reason for choosing timeless, non-trendy names is to avoid trends!

Missy8c · 30/12/2009 21:09

Haha Ponymum...I just caught on!

tummytickler · 30/12/2009 18:44

Oooh Ludovic - maybe - I like that alot!

I think the longer names for girls will see a huge rise - Penelope especially, also Arabella, Margaret and Elizabeth (more than it is already).
Although judging from the babies born at work it will be more Rubies, Molly's, Finley's and Felix's.

I also think Sylvie will see a big rise as an alternative to Sophie.

I think Isla will continue to soar, then drop out of favour in a few years - there have been no less than 15 in the last 4 months or so at work.

Sesi · 30/12/2009 17:25

I think Esme and Amelie could go top 20.

Boys - the old testament names will get even more popular so more Isaacs, Noahs, Jonahs, Calebs etc.

Also Ludovic will become a new trendy choice, not popular but not unheard any more. I've know of 2 born this year and Ben Fogle had a son called this.

jellybeans · 30/12/2009 16:56

Isaac

Elsa

PlonkerTeatowelOnTheirHeads · 30/12/2009 15:40

The ones that are popular atm I think are likely to remain popular for next year ...

Eve/Eva/Evie
Isabel/Isobel/Isabelle/Isabella
Heidi

Isaac
Zac/Zach/Zachary

But I also agree with Bridget in that names like Sarah, Jennifer, Abigail will soar as people try to pick something different from yet another Eve or Issy

But then what will everyone say when she is older and goes to stay with her niece?

Missy8c · 30/12/2009 14:59

ooh Florence is lovely

Bessie123 · 30/12/2009 14:55

I like the name Florence. There seem to be masses of babies and toddlers called Eve/Evie/Eva/Ava at the moment.

MamaLazarou · 30/12/2009 14:55

Interesting link, MrsBadger.

There are some great boys names on there.

But the girls list... FLANNERY?

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 30/12/2009 14:52

in 2005 Freakonomics suggested these will be the top US names of 2015.

As you can see, for girls at least, lots of them were popular 2009 UK names, so I reckon those not yet in the top 100 here will be heading there soon. Boys seem to be less UK-predicted, for some reason...

RnB · 30/12/2009 14:46

Maude is lovely
Darcey vile

violethill · 30/12/2009 14:45

Agree with Missy about Miley - hideous! Bet it becomes the new equivalent of the 1980s Kayley!

Not surprised to see Maisie growing in poularity - two colleagues have recently named their dd's Maisie.

FimBOW · 30/12/2009 14:44

Tracey, Sharon, Lynn

Brian, Desmond, Hubert.
