None of my friends like the name i've chosen...

I know the important thing is that we like it, and we do, but i've had nothing but negative comments from friends about babys name, and i'm feeling all hormonal and upset.

It's taken ages for us to find a name that we like and and can agree on, and that 'fits', and i don't know what other name we would use if we didn't use it.

The name is Seth Elijah, btw.

OP posts:

How dare people comment negatively about your choice of name (think they are fab by the way!)do people have no idea how hormonal/homicidal pregnant women and new mums are. Plus what business is it of theirs if you name him 'Hesta Tiger Manmade Zoomer' or wotever it's your choice and not theirs - don't always agree with the choices our friends/family make but there are times when you need to respect the decision!

kimlouiseb · 16/12/2009 21:54

I love the name Seth, and had Elijah on short list for DS2.

We had lots of negative reactions when we told people about DS1's name (Fyfe Jacob) when I was pregnant.
My Dad wouldn't call him by his name for the first few months (just called him 'the baby') - but thats quite typical behaviour for him and a whole other thread.

We ignored them (I just knew it was the right name if you know what I mean) and I'm so glad we stuck to our guns because I still love it, and the people who disliked it have grown to like it anyway.

BellaBear · 16/12/2009 21:29

I have a Seth and we (obviously) love it.

Interestingly, the reactions from people when we introduced him were either 'wow, interesting name, I LOVE it' or a bit confused because they couldn't launch into that automatically because they realised they didn't like it. But I found that amusing rather than upsetting - it was interesting to listen to what they said, while trying not to offend.

Oh, and the third response was 'like in Emmerdale?'!!!! (NO! we got inspiration after seeing Seth Lakeman in concert while I was pregnant)

PurpleEglu · 16/12/2009 21:18

Also remember these people all get to choose names they like for their own DC. YOur name is for you to like not them

PurpleEglu · 16/12/2009 21:16

I happen to love both of those names.

Important point that has been made already.

NEVER EVER EVER discuss names with family and friends. People feel they can say whatever when the name isn't on a baby yet. Once you give a baby the name they won't say anything. Well the odd rude one might but most will keep schtum.

seeker · 16/12/2009 21:08

I love Seth too - but he would be Seff at school down our way in Kent. Can people pronounce their -ths where you live? If so, go for it. If not, then think again. My friend really wishes she hadn't called her ds Efan!

MrsRigby · 16/12/2009 21:06

Oh dear.

As long as you and your DH/DP like it thats all that matters.

cyteen · 16/12/2009 21:05

It's lovely, don't be sad Next time you see any of these people, breezily tell them that you've thought about their comments and decided on a new, better name based on what they said, which is [insert unbelieveably awful/stupid made up name here]. Thank them, very seriously, for their help in showing you the error of their ways. They will be confounded

whelk · 16/12/2009 20:58

I LOVE it - really truly - it would be one of my top choices

newkiwi · 16/12/2009 20:35

Ignore them. If you like it, go with it.

I agree with previous poster, it's a lovely strong name. The only issue I could see would be if you surname starts with X. But that seems unlikely....

giddyupRudolph · 16/12/2009 20:31

I have a Seth so I love the name. Love it with Elijah too. Don't worry, you have picked a fine name.

claraquack · 16/12/2009 20:29

Wow I thought you were going to say you had chosen something like Jackanory Wombeldon or something.

Seth Elijah is fantastic. Ignore everyone who implies they don't like it, I think you have chosen really well.

needanamefast · 16/12/2009 20:29

I love it. Congratulations!!!

LilySwalLoosHerTurkeyBaster · 16/12/2009 20:26

I can sympathise , when dd2 was born we had some negative comments about her name.
I wasn't sure of it , dp's choice so that made me feel even worse.
Now i love it and it suits her completely.
I wish i had said something equally as offensive to those who commented at the time rather than just feel even worse about it.

I personally would never comment on someones name choice , obviously everyone has different tastes and that's it.

FWIW i like Seth Ignore them or think of a quick comment to say back.

MrsJamin · 16/12/2009 20:21

I know 3 lovely Seths - fab name, go for it. Don't talk any more about it before the birth, it's much easier to say "This is Seth" than "We're thinking about the name Seth..."

ib · 16/12/2009 20:20

I learnt my lesson first time round when discussing names with family and anything we threw out there was completely rejected - in the end we chose not to tell anyone the name until ds1 was born and we are doing the same with ds2.

Don't know why anyone feels the need (or right!) to comment on anyone else's choice of name.

MmeLindt · 16/12/2009 20:14

It is a lovely strong, manly name.

Ignore the comments, you like the name that is what is important.

LetThereBeRock · 16/12/2009 20:10

It's gorgeous. I really love it. Seth and Elijah are two of my favourite names. I'd use it.
It's not as though it's an incredibly weird name that could cause problems for the child.

Mimi1977 · 16/12/2009 19:01

Can I ask has the baby been born yet? If yes than saying you don't like the name is just plain rude!! But if he hasn't been born then that's what people do if you tell them. My advice would be not to say anything about your thoughts and just go for it as a name soon fits once baby is born.

And for what it's worth I think your name is lovely - Seth is a fab name!

piscesmoon · 16/12/2009 19:00

I don't like them, but that doesn't matter-I don't care whether anyone liked my choice-I did. You can't please everyone so don't even try!

reup · 16/12/2009 18:48

I don't understand why anyone cares what anyone else thinks for their names. I had some negatives comments about names I had chosen but it mattered not a jot. I would not have chosen their kids names either but would not have dreamt of telling them that.

I loved Seth but my annoying dh decided it sounded like Sess (as in pit) and he would not relent!

CuppaTeaJanice · 16/12/2009 18:44

As long as your surname doesn't start with X...

LastOfTheMulledWine · 16/12/2009 18:33

Oh Seth is my no 1 boy's name. I LOVE it.

Seth Elijah is really nice.

Congratulations.

LittleMissBliss · 16/12/2009 18:31

That should read, well then that's all that matters. Super tired.

LynetteScavo · 16/12/2009 18:30

Never, ever tell anyone the name you have chosedn beofre the baby is born!

I adore Elijah, it's a fantasic name. Seth has never been on my top 10 list, but I know 2 adorable Seths, and know lots of people who like the name.

Your friends obviously have poor taste!
