Love this name for a boy but worried people will assume he's a girl when abbreviated to Cass. Also, how would you pronounce Cassius -as it looks or Cash-us??

my point being they are roman classics as well so i do like roman naems

Maggie00 · 28/03/2010 19:15

yeah but i'm a thicko lockets, i never studied roman classics. I know that's what an educated person would think. I am a philistine and i am still learning on the hoof.

I really love the names Julius and Marcus though.

I'd heard of it, but only ever wrt muhammed ali, the notion of choosing it as a name wouldn't have occurred to me a year ago. But I 'get' it now. It's a 'grower'.

The power of mumsnet. When I first saw this name I thought 'como?' with a face like manuel from Fawlty Towers to match, but now it has really grown on me.

My ds nn is cass he is 10 months and it really suits him. It is most certainly a boys name.

moremoore · 27/03/2010 22:52

My son is called Cassius, i call him cash and pronounce cassius as cash- us, do have many arguments about how to say it, i think either way depending on if you like shortened to cass or cash, he did not suit cass

Another meaning is "a protective case" and our Cassius came into the world in his caul so it was very appropriate!

We call him Cass quite a lot I don't think of that as feminine at all but then I would say that.

happymerrychristmas · 13/12/2009 10:40

Cass/Cassie sounds a little feminine imo, but Cassius is nice, pronounced Cass-ius (not Cashus!).

Shame about the meaning, though.

Just looked up the name on Wikipedia (as I hadn't heard it before) and apparently it derives from the Latin 'Cassus', meaning 'empty', 'poor', 'robbed'.

Of course, people don't necessarily care about meanings, but I thought I'll share it anyway.

nooka · 13/12/2009 01:20

I don't think Cass is feminine. We once were going to call a prospective dd Casandra, and the nn would have been Cassie, not Cass (then our landlord got a small hairy dog called Cassandra, and so we went off the name - although this was some ten odd years before we actually had children!). I'd also pronounce Cassius as it looks.

Pronounce as looks, not Cash-us.

Perhaps Cass is slightly feminine, still like Cassius however, though have seen this come up a little more recently.

For me (and a whole load of other fans of a particular show) Cas is a rather fetching, decidedly male, angel. It's what you know and what you get used to. I'll always see it as a masculine nickname now.

MaggieNollaig · 12/12/2009 18:03

Caspar is lovely.

GetDownYouWillFall · 12/12/2009 17:38

my cousin's little boy is Caspar and everyone calls him Cas. He's not scarred.

MaggieNollaig · 12/12/2009 16:31

ps yes, Cass is too feminine.

MaggieNollaig · 12/12/2009 16:30

Cass eee uss. that's how i'd say it.

this name is becoming quite popular. i was looking at the stats that somebody posted the other night and this name is more popular than my son's name. which is more mainstream sounding. or perceived to be more popular i'd say.

i don't love it but i don't dislike it either. I love julius. That's much nicer and pronunciation is more obvious.

GhoulsAreLoud · 12/12/2009 14:49

I would assume Cass was a girl. Or a cat.

chegirlwithbellson · 12/12/2009 14:46

I am having this for DC5, I love it. I am not sure if it will be the first or second name yet.
