I think this is really cute. Would be short for Augustus. DP is not so convinced.

OK, so it this nice or not. Or is Augustus a bit poncey?

A definite no to Augustus. Gus is cute for a baby but I don't think it works when they're older.

I don't particuarly like Fergus but Angus is a great name, too good to be shortened.

doubleexpresso · 09/12/2009 19:00

We thought of Douglas nn Gus or Dougie

Tillyscoutsmum · 09/12/2009 18:41

Don't worry - he won't be getting his way He can chose a middle name if we go for Fergus [magnanimous emoticon]

Well as long as your dh doesn't get his way, your ds will have a beautiful name tilly .
The spelling issue was the only thing putting us off Lawrence.

Tillyscoutsmum · 09/12/2009 18:32

CantSleep - I think that's one of the things putting me off Laurence/Lawrence. I also know of one (adult) who is known as Lozza, which is also off putting . Laurie is very cute though.

I think at the moment (ds due any day) my favourite is Fergus and DH's is Rufus and the "both really like" one is Dominic.

Avadtoomucheggnoglatte · 09/12/2009 18:01

Love Gus, reminds me of Gusgus the mouse from Cinderella

CantSleepWontSleep · 09/12/2009 17:55

Oh how nice to find a thread with good names on it.

I want Fergus for this one if a boy, but dh won't agree. Have also suggested Angus but he won't go for that either.

We nearly called ds either Dominic or Lawrence (tilly - have you considered that 50% of people will spell Laurence differently from you?).

I also suggested Augustus and Atticus last time (again dh said no).

anamaria22 · 09/12/2009 14:55

I know a 3 year old Augustus - shortened to Gus.

Agree that you wouldn't really need to shorten Fergus and Angus - they roll off the tongue nicely.

sophiesmummie · 09/12/2009 12:16

I quite like Augustus, but then I seem to like 'poncy' names .

Fergus and Angus are nice too, but they hardly need shortening, do they?

MaggieNollaig · 09/12/2009 12:02

fergus/gus far less poncey

i like it, dont love it

mumoftoomany · 09/12/2009 11:57

I really like Augustus, shortened to Gus. Augustus works well in German, French and Spanish too (that may or may not matter to you, though .

Atticus is nice too, but I'm not that keen on Fergus and Angus (both sound very Scottish and don't translate that well into other languages).

MintyCandyCane · 09/12/2009 11:54

Gus rhymes with Pus

MrsMattie · 09/12/2009 11:51

road sweeper in Eastenders

fluffles · 09/12/2009 11:51

i would ALWAYS think that gus was short for angus (i'm scottish and live in scotland).

if you go with gus then if he ever lives in scotland everyone will assume he's called angus - that might not be a problem but something you should be aware of.

p.s. and i do like angus/gus

PanicMode · 09/12/2009 11:40

I love Gus - I want this one to be Angus if it's a boy, but we already have a Rufus, so DH has said it's OTT.....so I'm aiming for a Monty instead, far less OTT

mathanxiety · 08/12/2009 17:39

I met two little Augusts when oldest DD was being baptised a good few years ago, and liked the name. Also like Gustav and Fergus.

GhoulsAreLoud · 08/12/2009 17:21

Don't like Gus.

Makes me think of Gus the gorrila, and also guff.

midnightexpress · 08/12/2009 17:18

Love Gus.

Don't like Augustus, prefer Angus to Fergus.

sayanything · 08/12/2009 17:18

Isn't Gus a fast food chain in France?

Regardless, I really like both Angus and Fergus - and I'm not Scottish.

MamaLazarou · 08/12/2009 17:05

Nah. Too much like gust. As in 'potent gust'.

Note to self: must grow up some time soon.

birdofthenorth · 08/12/2009 16:57

Love Gilbert and Dominic.

Just Gus is my fave though!

Benedict and Rex and lovely names RnB. I love Rex but my surname begins with an R so it'd sound silly on my list!

belgo · 08/12/2009 16:45

Love Augustus and August (I know a couple) for a boy. My ds's middle name is Gustaaf.
