A few girls' names

Hello everyone,

DH and I are stumped for a girl's name - we've gone through so many. I have this list and wondered whether any jump out for any reason, good or bad - just for fun really, as who knows what we end up calling her. DH is worried that we will still be dithering when she's doing her GCSEs. She's due next week.

Kitty/Catherine
Martha
Ruth
Lila
Laura
Gretchen
Justine
Lalita
Asha
Zorah
Nina

Nina or Laura are both pretty and will suit baby, toddler, child and adult.

Lila always reminds me of sanitary towels, for some reason.

Btw - Asher is a boy's name. Asha is a girl's name.

Martha is sweet

MrsMattie · 07/12/2009 11:06

Kitty/Catherine - Catherine is elegant. Kitty is cute.
Ruth - very grown up name. I like.
Lila - not to my tastes. Sounds made up. Prefer Leila.
Laura - lovely, classic, feminine.
Gretchen - Not keen. I love Greta though.
Justine - NOOOOOO. SORRY JUSTINE MN!!! It's just soooo sixties/seventies.
Lalita - horrid
Asha - unusual and strong. I like it.
Zorah - I prefer the Neale-Hurston spelling - 'Zora'. Love it. Almost named by DD this.
Nina - beautiful, simple, classy. Again, was on my shortlist.

Ooh - interesting reactions!

Sweetnitanitro - Asha can be arabic, but my fave is the sanskrit meaning, Hope. Bucharest - it can be either a girl's name or a boy's name. Sounds feminine to me.

Zorah - means 'dawn' in Arabic and Slavic apparently, but according to wikipedia, also means 'place of wasps'

RnB - I think it's witchy too - it's why I like it!

Greta is very cute, imo. Gretchen sounds a bit witchy to me for some reason. Good luck with choosing

Kitty/Catherine lovely, classy, timeless
Martha- yawn sooooo Boden
Ruth- sounds harsh
Lila- Urgh- Kate Moss.
Laura- see Catherine
Gretchen- has those rolly plaits over each ear and is a milkmaid.
Justine- I like this. V cool.
Lalita- no, just no.
Asha- is a boy's name I believe?
Zorah- harsh
Nina- like this as well, misgiving would be I think Nina's have to be delicate and ballet-like. I don't breed them like that so would be wary.

sweetnitanitro · 07/12/2009 10:50

I like these-

Catherine
Martha
Ruth
Laura
Gretchen
Justine

Gretchen and Martha are my favourites from that list.

Kitty is OK as a nn for Catherine but sounds twee and childish on its own.

Lalita is too close to Lolita, Asha and Zorah sound a bit made up. Don't like Lila and Nina either.

But I do like unusual names, so maybe not the best person to listen to!

Rachiesparrow · 07/12/2009 10:44

RnB - I know, I'm surprised that I like it. I worry that if we call her that, it'll get shortened to something like Wretched.

Still, I can't help but think it's very pretty - pookabelle, thanks! I'm not crazy!
