Zoë?

The name "Zoë" - Do you like it? And do you think it sounds posh, chav, or somewhere in between? How do you think it fits with the current crop of kids names.

Would love to hear your honest opinion.

I am a Zoe as well, with the diareses (sp?) and I really like being called Zoe - it's unusual enough to be striking without being peculiar - most people I know know me and one other Zoe. I have quite a long middle name which balances it out nicely.

I've always liked it, never really wanted to be called anything else, and I like having an unusual initial.

Funnily enough, when my parents called it me in the very early 70s, people said to them "ooooh she won't thank you for THAT when she's older..."

I'm a Zoe, born in the 70s, never had another one in my school let alone class. I have the dots over the e too, but I guess it doesn't matter either way, I like the dots.
Strangely I didn't like it as a child as I thought it was too weird (in fact I spent ages trying to get my family to call me by by middle name, which is Barbara ) and didn't know any others, but love it as an adult.
I know of one three year old Zoe and that's it, it still seems reasonably unusual and I don't think it carries any 'class' connotations.

Thanks - still mulling over this name - any more thoughts on Zoë? - won't be offended if anyone doesn't like it? It's not as frilly as some of the names out there but maybe that's not a bad thing.

dd3 is a Zoe (without the dots)

we considered it for her older sisters, but thought it sounded a little bit harsh for a tiny baby, but changed our minds by #3 and think it's fab dd3 is nearly 5 now and really suits her name

Im called Zoe and i love my name!!

I've never really had any nicknames apart from Zo, and thats only the people who have known me forever and still not used much!

I have no dots, and don't want any dots!!

My christmas cards are always funny though, i get some odd spellings such as, Zoey, Zoie, Zoee. Theres only 3 letters please get it right!

It's kind of a little quirky without being what did you say?

Ooh, Zoe is top of our list for a girl as well at the moment (though hoping for baby name books for Christmas). My DH particularly likes it with the dots on the e, though I think I'd say we'd register her without them so that it isn't likely to cause problems. I'm not sure.

I love Zoe, it's my DH's favourite girl's name and if any DD's come our way it'd be high up my list.

To me it's strong, classic, not overly popular these days and equally good for a career woman as for a little girl (I suspect if I had one she'd get nicknamed some awful things like Zozo, but I'd do my best not to do so in public!).

I like it. It's my sister's name. I wouldn't consider it to be particularly posh, but definately not at the other end of the spectrum either.

I love it but then again I'm biased as it's my DD's name - full name is Zoe Isabella. She's the only Zoe around this neck of the woods under the age of about 15.

Love it. Was the middle name of DD2. Beautiful meaning - it means 'Life' but not the life we live physically, but the spiritual part of us, the life that lives forever.

Agree that don't need the two dots, just for the hassle sake.

i love it...i have one, complete with dots!!!

she's 6. we know of only one other little girl the same age who is also zoe, but think its more coincidence than fashion iykwim!

Some great comments - thanks. Another reason why I like it is because the word "Zoë" is used in the original Greek in the New Testament (120 times apparently) and means "eternal life" in that context. So you could argue that it is a Biblical name.

Like it a lot. It's a name that can't be categorised, which is part of its appeal, imo.

It's not posh or chav which is why I like it - you don't automatically conjure up an image in the way that you do with other names.

Will always be at the end of the line or register though, however it be easy to learn to write!

Thanks guys - yes its a very ancient Greek name and was quite popular in 70s. I'm trying to avoid names that end in an "a" or a "y" which many seem to do in this current crop (that's not anything against them) and am also trying to avoid granny names (some of which admittedly are quite sweet)

The 2 dots I inserted by doing "Insert" then "Symbol" in MS Word.

Keep your thoughts coming on "Zoë" ...
