I like Xavier as a name but when anybody asks his name nobody can repeat it back and nobody says that's nice! I'm now at the stage of avoiding striking up conversation or lying and saying his name is John to strangers! Have I made a mistake is it horrible and too pretentious and will Xavier have a horrible time his whole life? My other DS is Sebastian and I always get compliments.

Thanks for all your kind comments as a result we have decided to keep it. When I was out today and people asked his name I was a little more confident when I said it ( pronounced Zav-ee-eh!) and it seemed to be met with slightly more positive response.

For those of you that suggested using his middle name it's Atticus. . . . This is when I think maybe I have completely lost the plot! Do you think I have high hopes?

Xavier is a fantastic name. Stick with it.

discountmum · 25/11/2009 21:03

If you are having strong doubts now, I would change it. Alexander goes well with Sebastian, and this could be shortened to Xander.

bigstripeytiger · 25/11/2009 20:55

Its a great name, and it goes very well with Sebastian.
I dont think it is that unusual, and I wouldnt think of it as being an odd name.
I expect that when he is older he will be pretty pleased with his name - cool initial, and he can use Xav/Xavi/Xayv as shortenings if he wants.

How do you pronounce it in English? Is it like Saviour?

EachPeachPearMum · 25/11/2009 20:46

My BIL is still a little narked that we didn't call DS Xavier (disclaimer- he is half french)... but it is too religious a name for an atheist and a buddhist. (goes well with Sebastian, obviously)

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 25/11/2009 19:40

How is it pronounced then?

It's your baby, who cares what anyone else thinks?

JackBauer · 25/11/2009 19:25

For yelling down a street we use Xavs (pronounced Zavs).
Or if we really want to get his attention then Shusha works, as that is the only way he could pronounce it as a child

readysetgo · 25/11/2009 19:20

My nephew is called Xavier and although we do shorten it to Xavi occasionally (he is 3) I think it's gorgeous!

belgo · 25/11/2009 17:11

Said with the appropriate accent it doesn't sound pretentious at all.

Not sure it passes the 'shouted down the aisles of Asda' test though.

TsarChasm · 25/11/2009 17:03

Oh yes absolutely about it being 'grown up'. It's a name to grow into and will be fantastic for a man and a boy.

That's the trick of naming babies - bearing in mind that they'll be wearing the name for more years as an adult thatn as a baby/little child. It has to suit both age groups and this one def fits the bill alright!

Earthymama · 25/11/2009 15:11

I love Xavier, either with a Z or a H,as others have said he'll grow into it.

I love these threads when posters are mysterious about the names of their chldren, I spend ages trying to guess what they might be. I mean you mummydoc!!

Is it Clarissa? I love Clarissa!

jujubean · 25/11/2009 15:05

I like it, I think its quite a grown up name so I can understand why you think it doesn't really go with your tiny 5 week old baby. Just think of a handsome little toddler boy stomping around, do you like it more if you imagine him at a similar age to your other son?

Marioandluigi · 25/11/2009 14:59

I think its a lovely name, but I like John too, but its how you feel that matters, it would be easier to change it now rather than later.

My Daughter was Niamh. ic hose the name after my 20 week scan when I found out I was having a girl. I love the name but because people were using it before she was born coupled with the fact my DS insists on prononcing it n-EEE-ve put me off it. It didnt feel like 'her' name for months, and I reverted to calling her one of her middle names for a while, but it has grown on me.

Good luck with whatever you decide

baskingseals · 25/11/2009 14:54

love it - was one of choices for dc3 - sadly vetoed by mr boring

mummydoc · 25/11/2009 14:40

absolutely gorgeous name ! my dd2 has a rarely heard name and i freely admit is percieved as a "posh" name , i was abit similar at first becasue people used to say " umm thats nice" but in a tone that said " who do you think oyu are royalty". now she is 5 and i really do not care one tot , stick to your lovely name ( btw both oyur choices on our name lists when was expecting but had girls!)

JackBauer · 25/11/2009 14:30

My brother is Xavier, he loves it, espeically being able to sign X on offical documents
People mispronounce all of my families names, they aren't 'bizarre' just different, so I am sure it's not just your son. I have people correct the pronunciation of my name as I am saying it wrong. It's just other people, not you!

Strangely enough, Xavier is not his first name, it's his second (he has 4, don't ask), it just suited him better than his first name.

boodleboot · 25/11/2009 14:19

its gorgeous.....be strong and confident in your lovely choice for your darling son. [smie]

auntymel · 25/11/2009 13:54

Thank you I feel much more confident about it now. Also have no idea what I would have changed it too. Typically I had six girls names I liked and only one boys name. I also think he quite suits it I just need to learn not to hesitate when asked.
Thanks MN

If you don't like it then either change his name, or call him by his middle name instead. Much easier to do it now than later!

anchovies · 25/11/2009 13:43

My first proper boyfriend was called Xavier (his mum was French) and I still love the name. He was like a local celebrity as everyone knew him because of his unusual name! If I were you I would definitely keep it.

I felt the same about my ds1's name at first but he definitely grew into his name and I love it now.

KERALA1 · 25/11/2009 13:40

I think its a lovely name. Maybe introduce him as Zav until you get your confidence/he grows into his name?

Had the same with dd2's name which dh and I think is elegant and beautiful but gets similar reactions - the "how unusual", or even worse silence. We live in area where all the boys are Ben or Oliver and girls are Grace and Isabella and anything outside that bracket raises eyebrows. FWIW I think names like yours (and ours) evoke stronger reactions than your average Tom or Archie. Until they get used to them a few dull and conventional people will but they soon get used to it.

TsarChasm · 25/11/2009 13:34

It's a perfectly nice name (is it French?) but if you have decided it's not for ds, then change it now quickly before it becomes too established or it will always feel not 'right'.

Don't change it though if you love it but for other peoples sake. It's not a crazy gimmicky name no-one has ever used. I can't understand why anyone would have a problem saying it. Maybe you'll have to confirm the spelling a few times to some people. It's uncommon but that can be a good thing.

My ds has an uncommon name. We had a few mixed reactions to it when he was born. Mil would only call him by his middle name for some weeks cos she kept 'forgetting' but I just ignore her mostly when she's being obtuse.

He's now 8. People do grow into their name and make it their own. Ds has told me he likes it very much and there are rarely any others with it, so when anyone thinks of it they think of him

When you tell people you ds's name sound enthusiastic and happy with it. If you sound doubtful people will pick up on it and start to think there's something wrong with it (which there's not of course!)
